This Week's Essential Tracks!

THE DEAD WEATHER, I CUT LIKE A BUFFALO
Jack White could be playing death metal and it’d still have a saucy groove the size of the Grand Canyon. Here he is doing a big, bluesy one and, yep, it’s groovy.

FRANK TURNER, POETRY OF THE DEED
Another brilliant tune from everyone’s favourite punk-busker-nomad fella, Frank Turner. He’s on tour this week, go catch him and have a good old sing-song.

PARAMORE, BRICK BY BORING BRICK
Paramore's Brand New Eyes album is an absolutely gleaming gem of a record, and this breezy pop nugget - complete with 'bah-dah-dah' sing along - is one of the shiniest highlights. We love it!

PUSCIFER, POLAR BEAR
Are Puscifer, the disco-tastic side-project of Tool frontman Maynard James Keenan, a joke? Possibly, but if they are, they’re a joke that’s good to have a boogie to.

UNEARTH, GRAVE OF OPPORTUNITY
When you want a pizza, you go to Pizza Hut. When you want aggressive, chunky metal, you go to Unearth and get a nice, big, thick slice of goodness.

FOO FIGHTERS, WHEELS
One of their more lighters-in-the-air moments, this new Foos track is a lovely bit of radio friendly rock that’ll doubtless sound awesome when it’s being belted out by a festival crowd.

THEM CROOKED VULTURES, NEW FANG
Dave Grohl pops up in Playlist twice this week, this time with QOTSA man Josh Homme and ex-Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones. They’re playing seriously cool rock n’ roll. Because they’re seriously cool.

THE ACADEMY IS…, I’M YOURS TONIGHT
Big, bouncy and brilliant, this new cut from The Adademy Is… is superb stuff. Get a whole, download only EP of it at their website.

NILE, UTTERANCES OF THE CRAWLING DEAD
As Egypt-obsessed as ever, Nile here serve up an overwhelmingly heavy bit of death metal brutality with an Eastern twist. A bit like having a pyramid shoved into your ears.

ASH, JOY KICKS DARKNESS
Their idea to do an alphabetical tour of the UK is <<genius>>, and although their A-Z singles series sadly isn’t in alphabetical order, this (single B), is another reason to love the Downpatrick boys.

This Week's Essential Tracks!

BURY TOMORROW, YOU AND I
Bury Tomorrow are right heavy, and they don’t piss about when it comes to delivering the goods. Check out this cut from their new album, Portraits.

ARCHITECTS, FOLLOW THE WATER
You’ll want to go bonkers to this cut of furious metal from the Brighton boys. Watch the video at Kerrang.com and watch people doing just that!

HORSE THE BAND, A PARTRIDGE
As Christmas approaches, bands just can’t help getting all festive. HORSE The Band’s contribution to Chrimbo won’t make it onto carol lists any time soon, but it’s still fun. In October.

SKELETONWITCH, REPULSIVE SALVATION
If you like your metal balls out, heavy and covered in spikes, this new cut from Skeletonwitch is just the job. Get your metal on!

THE BRONX, INVEIGH
Punk Bronx, rather than Mariachi El Bronx, this sew single is a groovy, swaggering stormer with a big mouth and plenty of attitude. Wahey!

PLACEBO, BREATHE UNDERWATER
Placebo’s Battle For The Sun album is right good, and Breathe Underwater is a shining example why. Get a free live version from Kerrang.com

GREEN DAY, 21ST CENTURY BREAKDOWN
You don’t need telling how good Green Day are. Even your grandmother knows they’re ace, so we’ll just tell you that if you haven’t heard this yet, GET TO IT!

THURSDAY, CIRCUITS OF FEVER
A slow-burning, dreamy offering from the New Jersey post-hardcore crew. You can’t really mosh to it, but you’ll love it nonetheless.

AFI, ZIGGY STARDUST
AFI are one of the few bands who could tackle this David Bowie classic and not make a pig’s ear of it. Davey Havok’s even got Bowie’s warble down to perfection.

30 SECONDS TO MARS, KINGS AND QUEENS
Jared’s back, and he’s done an album of brutal, Satan-loving death metal… just kidding. Anything other than choruses the size of China from 30STM would be a swizz. Good job Kings And Queens has one, then.

This Week's Essential Tracks!

BRING ME THE HORIZON, THE SADNESS WILL NEVER END
Big, riffy, and featuring guest vocals from Architects man Sam Carter, this cut from last year’s Suicide Season album sees BMTH in full, metallic flight. Jolly good show, gents.

ATREYU, STORM TO PASS
The California crew return with a darker slant on this big tune. Proof that there’s more to them than muscles and sunshine. Bones and moonlight, perhaps?

ALEXISONFIRE, BORN AND RAISED
Ever seen Chinese dragons dancing to post hardcore? If you watch the video for Alexisonfire’s stonking new single you will. Lovely stuff.

GOD FORBID, STOCKHOLM SYNDROME
That’s super heavy metal mob God Forbid covering Muse. How does it sound? Absolutely bloody marvellous, of course.

LOSTPROPHETS, AC RICOCHET
As revealed in K!, the making of the new Lostprophets record wasn’t easy (or cheap!). But, as shown on this superb rocker, the results speak very loudly for themselves.

WEEZER, SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO?
Having written enough classics of his own, Rivers Cuomo doesn’t need to cover anyone else’s. But here, he and Weezer give a superb version of this Clash number. Naturally, it’s great.

RANCID, UP TO NO GOOD
Rancid are the sort of band you can imagine being constantly up to no good. Fortunately, the punk ruffians’ music is always good as gold. Ragged, sloppy and indelicate, but good as gold all the same.

CANTERBURY, ELEVEN, TWELVE
These young Brit pups – not from Canterbury, incidentally – know their way around a tune, like this off-beat toe-tapper. Catch them on tour with Billy Talent.

FALL OUT BOY, ALPHA DOG
A new track from their forthcoming Believers Never Die Best Of collection, this is all the bounce and fun you love about Fall Out Boy. Wahey!

THE BLACKOUT, THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS
Like a perpetual stream of ace tunes, the new single from The Blackout is another brilliant bouncer from the Welsh wonders. It’s got Josh from You Me At Six on it, too.

The Playlist 14-10-09

This week's essential tracks!

MIDDLE CLASS RUT, ALL WALKS OF LIFE
Middle Class Rut don’t muck about, they just get their groove on, crank it up and away they go. Two blokes, one massive garage rock racket.

THE GHOST OF A THOUSAND, KNEES, TOES, TEETH
”It’s only rock ‘n’ roll,” screams TGOAT frontman Tom Lacey. Wrong: it’s rock and roll with a rocket in its pocket and a barrel-load of hardcore muscle.

ENTER SHIKARI, WALL
One of the poppier moments from ES’ fabulous Common Dreads record, Wall sees them lightening up on the drum and bass and doing a chorus you’ll be singing for weeks. Ace.

SWOUND, PREDATOR 3
Swound’s sunny pop punk sounds like they haven’t got a care in the world. Which they probably haven’t, if they’re writing songs about hypothetical sci-fi sequels.

ROB ZOMBIE, WHAT?
The Hellbilly is back, part rock and roll star, part circus freak. This big rock stomp sounds like the musical accompaniment to the most deranged, but fun, haunted house ride ever.

HATEBREED, IN ASHES THEY SHALL REAP
When Hatebreed do heavy, they really do go the whole hog. This song rules, and it’s been included on the soundtrack for the forthcoming Saw VI movie.

ARCH ENEMY, BEAST OF MAN
An old classic, redone with Angela Gossow barking her scary roar over the top. The original of this was heavy enough. This is heavier.

DEAD BY SUNRISE, LET DOWN
Another newie from Chester Bennington’s bit on the side from Linkin Park, It’s awash with keyboards and dark electronica and, like his day job, has a chorus the size of a continent.

ALICE COOPER, KEEPIN’ HALLOWEEN ALIVE
Balls to cheesy Christmas songs, here’s ‘Coop with a big old rocker about the delights of Halloween. Doesn’t mention anything about the stingy bastards who give trick or treaters an apple instead of sweets, mind.

BRAND NEW, AT THE BOTTOM
Pretty mellow, but dark with it, this new cut from BN’s superb new Daisy album starts off quiet and morose, before the anthemic chorus takes over. Nice work, gents.
