I think...

its not shit-but its not brilliant either.
Actually to be quite honest its a slight disappointment after Venus doom, and there are some parts where he sounds slightly deranged but its not terrible just....disappointing and...very good. but goods all it gets sadly

I think Screamworks is the best cd HIM has put out since Love Metal. I love their first 4 albums, but I wasn't too fond of Dark Light and Venus Doom. I'm happy to see HIM is finally back to a better sound.

I agree with Samantha. Dark Light & Venus Doom were not a patch on their older stuff IMO. Especially Venus Doom (which I was really dissapointed by). This album is a lot more upbeat and lively than the past 2 albums, which reminds me more of their older stuff. I love Screamworks :D

It's awesome!

The album is absolutely amazing, I recommend it for new and old fans. The songs are powerful, catchy, and full of all the great melancholy lyrics. You can hear influences from all the previous albums, save for Dark light.

The special edition bonus CD is fantastic. The acoustic songs by Valo really bring out all his feelings onto the air.

All in all, it's a welcome break from Venus Doom and faster paced, but still is recognisable as a HIM album.

The wait is over...

It does gall me that people think an adequate review is 'lolz, it's shit...' for goodness sake, you'll find something you like in any album and it's not exactly difficult in a H.I.M album.

I was lucky enough to grow up listening to H.I.M, I first heard Razorblade Romance when I was six, and although there were some weak points to 'Dark Light' and 'Venus Doom' there were also some great songs namely 'Rip Out the Wings of a Butterfly' and 'Sleepwalking Past Hope'.

Thankfully Screamworks seems to be an improvement on the last two albums, 'Heartkiller' is already on my top 25 most played and it made me go back and rediscover why I had always loved H.I.M. I'm Scandinavian myself and I realised what Ville had mastered down to a point, how to fit the darkness, beauty and great expanses of Finland into a catchy, wonderfully crafted song.

If you don't believe me, go out in the forests and fields, deep under the cover of snow and play 'Join Me In Death' or 'Wicked Game' at full volume. Then as you hear the rumbling guitars and the rich intensity of Ville's voice you'll understand what I mean about the great expanses. You'll find something similar in 'The Rasmus' songs.

Screamworks in itself is a wonderfully crafted album, it has the heavy riffs, the more contemplative moments and an upbeat mood that juxtaposes effectively with the melancholy lyrics. Ville's voice could never ever be mistaken for anyone else, it's H.I.M's trademark (along with monster riffs) and definitely one of the reasons why H.I.M has such an enduring and loyal fan base even once the melodramatic kids have had their fill of angst.

Katherine Wheel, Like St Valentine, The Foreboding Sense of Impending Happiness are three standout tracks though there is a great consistency throughout.

Katherine's out there are lying if they said they didn't get a thrill from hearing Ville purr ''Katherine Wheel, I'm burning up for you.'

Definitely one to buy for enduring fans and fresh listeners. And for all you Finns out there, as always you'll find a little piece of home!

Love, love, love it!

Once again, Ville and the boys serve up love, pain and loneliness with a nod, wink and amazing backbeat.

Has anyone read Ville's interviews in my book "The Successful Rebel"? He's an amazing man, and once you learn how his mind works (as much as one can;) you can understand his creative process.

Fantastic album!

I like it. <3

People really need to stop complaining. Yeah maybe their older stuff was better. But that was years ago every album has a different sound and the band changes their sound to suit their situation and feelings at that point in time..

It's amazing in it's own way. In a sense the band is progressing.

Pick out the positives instead of always picking out the negatives. And i'm sure there is plently of positive points on this album.

It;s a fresher sound and uplifting. Love this album, absolutely amazing.

its definately different.

I got my copy yesterday, and i think it good. Its more americanized than anything theyve released before, with the exception of dark light, and im not sure if thats a good thing or not. Many bands seem to be taking tht route nowerdays, The 69 eyes back in blood springs to mind, and bands like HIM have to be carefull not to loose their roots too much because its that factor which makes them difffernt. However, saying that, its not a sell out album directed at recieveing mainstream credit in the US, its just very different to what people hav come to expect and as ville said, Its a flipside of venus doom. In some places few of the lyrics are quite confusing, lines such as "turn to page 43 and you'l understand" and most of the lyrics in shatter me with hope are very hard to relate to because they are so obscure. My faves r Katherine wheel, ode to solitude, disarm me and love the hardest way. They are epic. Overall i think this album will be very good live, which is ace cos im seeing them in march!!! cant wait!!!!

Screamworks: Love In Theory and Practice

I got my special edition album today, together with my gig-entry T-shirt for the Valentine's Day gig. Woop Woop! I've played the album twice over this evening (not yet heard Baudelaire In Braille. Got that to look forward to.). Well, sorry you guys who feel you can only give it a lukewarm or negative review. Life must be very difficult for you. I think the album is excellent. Kaarina, I can't top your review so I'm not even gonna try. But I agree with every word.

Oh! and Dale and Jess, you two should get together sometime. I suspect you won't have the most scintillating conversations, but you could always watch the kiddies programmes together ;-) .

Screamworks : Love in theory and practice.

I'm on the fence about the album.
Sure it's HIM from the get go. But Villes formerly husky voice has turned into this high pitched, american accent which to say the least confuses me. But it's A LOT better than Venus Doom. Quite frankly that album was shit.

The lyrics are still what you'd expect to hear from HIM but the music is upbeat and happy. There's nothing wrong with upbeat and happy....but it's a tad too much into the mainstream for me. It sounds like they're trying to get famous rather than make good music. Do they not realise that they are already huge? maybe not to millions of people but they play a significant part to thousands of their fans around the world.

But let's look at Green Day and how they sold out. Do i honestly want a tattoo on my stomach of a heartagram and have a bunch of 13 year olds coming upto me going ''oh HIM are my favourite band i've loved them for 3 weeks'' and the only song they know being Heartkiller. No thanks.

I am fortunate enough to be seeing HIM six times in March. However after listening to this album, I expect i'm going to be up for severe disappointment. Being a major fan of HIM since i was 10, shortly after the release of Razorblade Romance, I expect a full back catalogue, and i know that's not going to happen. Ville, i love you darling, but i honestly don't want to hear a bunch of new tracks and then Wings of A fucking Butterfly.

Bands that have two albums that sound exactly the same are crap. I love nothing more than to watch a band evolve over the years. But watching HIM elove into a teeny band makes me want to go to a tattoo shop and get a cover up :(

It's a great record. Really good pop-rock album. I'd say it was similar to Razorblade Romance in its' approach. Very punchy, direct sound to it. Critics are receiving it well. Metal Hammer gave it 8/10 and I think Kerrang gave it 4 Ks.

Can't understand the hate for Venus Doom though. Brilliant record. Lots of variety and they tried something different yet very close to their Black Sabbath inspired, original sound.

...

I'm not sure as to what to honestly say.
Maybe it's me, but I have the Sp. ed. of Screamworks waiting for me to pick up at the post office. I haven't listened to any song yet & after reading a lot of negative, or therefore, 'let down' comments from supposed 'die-hard' fans, I'm not really bothered with listening to it now & for some reason don't have the care/ desire to. =/
Granted, I'm sure my inbox may be brimming with 'hatemail' by the end of the week, but at least I'm being honest....

At this point, all I can say is that I do sincerely wish the best of success for the band with this album. After so much blood, sweat, tears & who knows how many sleepless nights have gone into this album- from the writing of it, to rehearsals, to the recording- I think the band do deserve this album to be received well by the public- fans old & new alike.

As for my lack of desire at this point to not listen to it, maybe that will change & maybe I'll love it. Maybe I'll listen to it tonight, maybe I won't ever. However, I still wish the best for the band.

As for you haters of the band that simply post comments on here just to diss the band & make yourselves look like morons in the process, you should pick up your toys & go play elsewhere.;)

'Nuff said.....

Correction...

My line "As for my lack of desire at this point to not listen to it, maybe that will change & maybe I'll love it." should be- As for my lack of desire at this point to listen to it, maybe that will change & maybe I'll love it.

I decided to change my wording & forgot to omit the word 'not'.

50/50

Well, for starters i have been a die hard fan for 7 years now since the musical brilliance of 'Love Metal' was released, and i have to say i'm not sure about this one.
The easiest way i can do this is in Possitive and negative parts:

The possitive:
Ville and Co have focussed very much in the past of lonliness, heartbreak and dispair. All signifiers of the 'Love Metal' genre. But this time round i think ville has realised that that formula is getting boring and 'samey'. So this time round he seems to have unearthed albums from the 1980's, with a significant hint of Deepech mode embedded throughout. You could be confussed at times to believe that this was a deepeche mode tribute act.
Now that ville has become sober, he seems to have perked up a bit and not become so depressive. Even though the song titles are still very melancholic and, some might say 'emo' there is a hell of a lot of beat and fast tempos in this album, which could turn a tragedy almost into an adrenaline rush. Don't wanna hear 'The arms of Rain' or 'Ode to Solitude' on speed.
There is not one song i want to skip and all have a blissfully unique sound and riffs that will keep them fresh in your minds for months to come.

The Negatives:
Iam not sure that the direction the sound of the album is going in is a good one. It's certainly different, with a lot of Drum and bass beats included, almost sounds like they want to appeal to the clubbing masses in places. Is it goth? is it alternative clubbing music? I say its more the latter.
I have always said to myself 'I wish HIM would make a love metal 2' but boy, this isn't it. This is far from it. Yes it might be americanised, but 'Dark Light' still appeals to the HIM/goth fanbases, whereas this isn't HIM as we used to know them.
Some might say that HIMs music, and indeed Ville Valo, could mature like a fine wine, but this album is more like milk; tastes really good fresh and it is refreshing, but after a while it goes sour and you just want to throw it away.

Conclusion:
The album is really vibrant and we see a side to ville we never knew existed but is this really what love metal means to us or has the band thats created 'Greatest lovesongs volume 666' and 'Razorblade Romance' sold out to the states? My answer is watch out New York he's looking for appartments

SCREAMLOVE!!

Well, SCREAMWORKS, it's good, I love it, some sounds are extremely poppy, but, they still being HIM, so that's no problem, about the lyrics, I love them!!! pure poetry!!!

In my opinion, it's a combination between all HIM albums, I really love it, and can't wait for Mexico's concert (if it's going to be a concert here in Mexico :( ]

That's my opinion, and it's not shit, but it's a lovely album I mean, as Ville said that are postcards for a special person (I hate her) and it's okay, I love the album and hope that the next one brings a song like sleepwalking Past Hope, or For you...

Love it!!

Screamworks is definitely a better album than Venus Doom, but not quite as good as Love Metal or Razorblade Romance. It's NOT SHIT! Some of the songs are a little bit poppy (Heartkiller), but songs like Dying Song and The Foreboding Sense Sense Of Impending Happiness blew me away. Villes voice is amazing the whole way through the album and some of the best vocals hes laid down. Its not worthy of 5K!s but more than worthy of the 4K!s it was given. Just my opinion.

Love it!!

Even if it is a bit more commercial than we are used to with HIM, lyrically and vocally it is amazing. Anyone who can't appreciate the sound of this album - crawl back under a stone!!!!!

huoh...
