Simon Cowell blasts Rage Against The Machine Xmas campaign

X Factor mogul Simon Cowell has blasted the campaign to make Rage Against The Machine the Christmas Number One calling it “stupid.”

A few weeks ago Rage fan Jon Morter set up a FaceBook group to encourage fans to buy the Rage Against The Machine classic Killing In The Name – made famous by it’s Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me refrain – digitally through iTunes or We7 between Sunday, December 13 and Saturday December 19 to try and prevent the winner of this year’s X Factor from going to Number One at Christmas. The group currently has over 550,000 members.

"If there's a campaign, and I think the campaign's aimed directly at me, it's stupid," said Cowell at press conference in London this afternoon (Thursday, December 10).

"Me having a Number One record at Christmas is not going to change my life particularly," he added. "It does however change these guys' lives and we put this opportunity there so that the winner of The X Factor gets the chance of having a big hit record. I think it's quite a cynical campaign geared at me which is actually going to spoil the party for [the three X Factor finalists]. I also think it's incredibly dismissive of the people who watch and enjoy the show to treat our audiences as if they're stupid and I don't like that."

“The X-Factor has bagged the last four Christmas Number Ones and I think it’s killing one of our country’s great traditions,” Jon Morter told Kerrang!. “I’m totally fed up with this and during a chance viewing of the show, I snapped. I made a Facebook group to see if there were any others who agreed with me.”

“The response has been incredible,” he added. “Killing In The Name is the perfect song. How good would it be to have Rage Against The Machine at the top of the charts instead of a Simon Cowell act?”

We wholeheartedly agree Jon. The time to act is now, people! Join the revolution at www.ragefactor.co.uk.

Ergh

Can't he handle a little bit of healthy competition?

To see talented bands travelling round the country in tiny shit vans in the freezing cold playing to 10 people and sometimes not even having enough money to reach the next venue let alone getting themselves something to eat and a place to stay, and then to see someone get piss easy automatic sucess through some TV show without putting the effort in is sickening.

Thats funny..

I thought the christmas number one was determined by what people bought, which is determined by what they like. If 600,000 buy rage against the machine then taht win is as legitimate as any other.

Man I really hate that guy. I hope rage win, play TOTP and burn a big xfactor flag. And I hope next year people just don't buy the bullshit they sell us and give the 5million odd pound they throw away to some charity that can actually use it to help people.

Cowell makes me laugh. He's talking about this campaign "spoiling" the x-factor winners big opportunity. The fact is its spoilt from the start. You'll milk everything you can out of these poor deluded souls and then drop them as soon as the spood-fed amongst us tire of them.

I support Rage against the machine for Christmas number 1.
The other day one of the x-factor contestants was all "I hope I win, I've worked really hard for this"
NO YOU HAVEN'T!!!!
If Simon doesn't want this ruining the "contestants" success [i.e his], then why doesn't he wait an extra week until the 'winner' releases 'their' song...

Anything that kicks anything to do with X-factor being on my TV tho... I fully support.

Epic lolz ensues

I truely think that if you have talent, an amazing voice etc, you will eventually get the succes you want.

I feel bad for bands that spend years and years on the road suffering but still doing what they love in hope of one day being a big - or at least bigger - band.

It annoys me that someone gains succes through these shows literally just by being on the telly. True, you get some good singers, I mean i'm not going to lie, I think Joe's got an outstanding voice, but I still don't believe in these televisioned competitions.

Support true talent and determination... and instrument playing! Not just 17 year old pillocks that get to the final just because they're 'fun'.. apparently. (:

oh this is too good. it would actually be fuckiing hilarious if RATM did get number one. awesome, but hilarious to hear his reaction after it!im gonna buy it. ill buy it a few times. ALSO. i am going to download the x factor song free, and send it to whoever the fuck wants it. im gonna ask random people at school if i can send it to them, simply to PREVENT them from buying it themselves. this needs to be done aswell as buying the RATM song.

He thinks it's aimed directly at HIM? What a pompous twat. I'm pretty sure that it's just because X Factor CONTINUOUSLY gets the number one slot at Christmas. So predictable.
At least this time there's some competition.
Now I'm not the biggest RATM fan you'll find, and I do watch and like X Factor...I'm still backing this!
The act who wins merely expects to get a Christmas number one now.
Does anyone remember the times when the Christmas number one used to actually be a CHRISTMAS song? No, me neither. Too long ago.
Even if RATM doesn't make it, if some form of Christmassy song makes it I will be happy.
Rant over, I promise :') <3x

I personally love x factor, and i hate all these comments having such a huge go at the contestants, just because they get it easier than other bands.
So what?
Like who you want, but dnt hate others for disagreeing.

HOWEVER

Simon is a complete c**t, and it would make a nice change to have a band like RATM top at christmas.

i like rage against the machine, this is jst sad tho. the fact is people in the xfactor are talented, if they get to number one its cause the majority of the public like them, its not like we're being forced to buy the single.

Half the people who signed up to this campaign wont even buy killing in the name of, its a waste of time by people trying to be out there and be like "oh am standing up to the system, am going to stop simon cowell from getting to number one"
Its just sad

Of course he can can handle competition. Unfortunatley the tabloid media's coverage of this campaign only will make more people 'make sure that this travisty doesn't happen' because X factor is designed to make money from idiots! I would love Rage to be number one and wiilingly plan to give my money to Sony, but a cynical part of me thinks that somehow this whole episode will only go to make cowell richer,

that saddens me......

Simon Cowell does not own any shares in Sony. So he will not benefit from RATM getting a number 1.
Here is a quote from the London Evening Standard :

"Currently, profits from X Factor, Talent and American Idol go to either Simon Fuller's 19 company or Sony... This has meant that while the shows have got bigger,Cowell owns none of them. “He doesn't have any shares in them, he has nothing of the content,” said one of his friends. “They are all owned by Sony or 19."

If he owned shares in Sony then he would at least have part ownership of the show, and this quote cleary shows he does not.

As for those sticking up for Xfactor and calling the campaign retarded!? I'm very surprised and dissapointed to see views like this on Kerrang. This is meant to be a place for real music fans who like real bands. There must be a few too many Metro Station fans lrking on the site at the moment ;)

Personally I feel that just giving X-factor a monopoly on the chart instead of making a stand for decent music is retarded.

On one hand you have some karaoke singer with a sob story on ITV saying
"OMG! Singing has been my passion since forever. Except I never realised it till I saw the poster saying that X-factor auditions were coming to my city. And I've never made any sort of effort myself to have a music career. I'd rather let ITV do that for me because I'm too lazy to go to the effort of writing my own songs, forming a band, playing a gig or just generally doing anything that should be involved with having a career in the music industry" They then have several thousands of pounds of marketing behind them promoting the single getting plugged on the radio 24/7.

And you want to compare that person to a band who have spent YEARS touring shitty venues for no money, slowly building up a fanbase, perfecting their music, putting on great live shows, going into their own pocket time and time again for equipment, recording, cd printing, t-shirts, van hire, fuel and food. All while working a 9-5 job so they can just barely manage to fund the band until one day MAYBE a A&R guy from a small label finally takes notice and signs them. Who deserves it more? Honestly?

Those saying they get to number 1 because the public like them? The Crazy Frog got to number 1. Do you know anyone who actually liked that? Bob the Builder? Mr Blobby? Teletubbies? Aqua's Barbie Girl? The Vindaloo song? (only no.2 but the point still stands) Do you know anyone who thinks any of these are good songs? Performances filled with energy, creativity and passion?

The fact is the majority of people in this country are idiots who aren't even music fans but will buy whatever is played at them loud enough and often enough on radio. Their whole lives are dictated by modern marketing (which these days is about 2 steps away from full on brainwashing) and what multi-billion pound companies want you to buy because they are too bone idle to think for themselves!
When they're not buying shit music they're getting whatever clothes are just out (because what you're wearing is sooo 5 minutes ago) buying the latest Fifa game for Xbox (because the exact same game with updated team rosters is worth another £40 right?) purchasing Gilette Fusion razors (because Beckham uses it, oh wait he's a footballer why the fuck do you care what he shaves with!?) The list goes on and on and on. These boderline zombies are the ones who determine whats in the charts.

Fortunately some people are not quite so brain dead and feel like making a stand against this terrible excuse for an "artist" who get's a guaranteed number 1 every year. This campaign will show the music industry that there is a large number of people who are extremely dissatisfied by mainstream chart pish and the state of the music industry in general, and would rather listen to real music than X-factor crap

I hate simon too but....

Ok i hate Simon Cowell. Anyone who goes on Top Gear and brags about his plastic surgery done on himself, then tries to convince that Jeremy Clarkson should have it too is a massive cockosaures-rex IMO.

However that set aside Simon does have kind of a point in what he says. Which is all the people that a trying to stop him by buying RATM will not work. Why?? Well ain't that obivouse?:

1) His song (sorry I mean the winner of X-factors song) applies to all ages of all age groups. From 10 to 100. RATM is for a much smaller demographic, a 80 year old women is not going to listen to 'fuck you i will not...' (well if she did then awesome but sadly the is the real world)

2) Most people who are rock fans already have the RATM song ( i know i do) so who is gonna waste money, to buy the song again, just to piss off Simon Cowell (if at this point you are thinkiing 'I would' then you need to get out more)

3) The charity card - Ok so once again to get more people to proove a point and throw money away, all proceeds are going to charity. So basically people only want to give money away to a chairty when someone else is being screwed over. I mean think about it, would you give money to a charity because they gave you a sticker or helped some kid OR are you giving to chairty to buy a song just to piss of some celeb you have never met, never will meet probably and who gets paid to be a Thunder c**t?

To be honest i would of had a lot more respect for this if instead of using an old RATM song that everyone has listen too time and time and time again to actually find a new band to rival the x-factor twats and get that to number on. So i just see this as another publicity stun, sorry but thats what it is.
