Can I just say, before I buy this issue, that your Download 'special' in the last issue was disappointing. In previous years I've always enjoyed it, but Slipknot, Fred Durst and a paragraph from some of the stars of each band doesn't make a festival preview, in my opinion. Its like the line-up overall wasn't hip or trendy enough? Fact is, Whitesnake, Journey, Faith No More, Lawnmower Deth et al, all showed the young pretenders how to put on a goddamn show. Next year, at least look like you're interested.

Hopefully the review won't wind me up too much.

after coming home and having the best weekend at download ever, i was very dissappointed with the reviews and coverage you did of the festival...how the hell could you give a band such as the blackout 4 k's then only give bands such as shinedown and staind only 2???!!!and marilyn manson 1 k?? the blackout were no where near worthy of what they were rated for!!! the biggest reaction they got was when they played songs of bands who were bigger and a hell of a lot better than them!and trying to get everyone on their knees???everyone knows that is what slipknot are known for....to me they looked like a band in need of havin to have their set cut short to save them and the crowd the embarrassment.
i was at shinedown watching their amazing set and there was no sign of anyone getting tired if them....if anything they should have been on for longer!and deserve a lo more credit for what they do! and have you ever thought of doing more around the campsites and the crowd as you know that its the crowds there who also make the festival! maybe next year you should take time to listen to the music and not a cry for help!!!!!

Only 2Ks for Journey? Are you serious? They were top drawer.

Agreed with ratings for Manson, Shinedown and ZZ Top though. None of them were at all inspiring.

I completely agree with Becky, Shinedown had the crowd going crazy! I can't believe they were only on for 30 minutes..and Manson..well I think Manson actually was shit so y'know. ;/

Download review

Are you friggin serious! guys i used to look forward to the reivew because each year i sadly couldn't go because i was too young. however, this year i was fortunate enough to go! But the review was diabolical!!! ok where do i start? Hollywod undead recieving 3Ks fairy nuff until i read the paragraph! "hideously meatheaded"??? care to explain this comment? and 2Ks for staind, are you insane? their songs are so full of meaning and truth and sang beautifully. ok it may not be the most metal of the bands on the lineup but they still ruled. Moving on to saturday, the legend that is marilyn manson only recieved one! despite the fact that it was a difficult spot to fill. after PENDULUM and before SIPKNOT who' fans have a reputation for bottling! hmmmm id say he did pretty well to be honest.
Ok, finally, the attrocious review of sunday. 3Ks for falll from grace, acceptable and to say they began the day they did a bloody good job in my opinion. especially as they had a crowd of around 50 to please. i know i came out singing to burned!
right, my biggest complaint of this review must have been 2KS FOR JOURNEY!! ARE YOU ACTUALLY OFF YOUR ROCKER!!!! or were you not even there! and they dont even get an image! "radio fodder?" im actually offended for them! they absolutely rocked!! did you see the crowd??? absolutely loving it! i'm not going to deny that you did get it right on some occoasions such as zz top who quite literally came on stage, played their set and came off again. not the best set to say they are supposed to be legends. And the bare cheek to sat whitenake are "tongue in cheek" is an outcry. its just unfair to say they were friggin amazing. those last four hours of the festival will stay with me for life. a truly amazing first download festival with a to be frank, truley unfair and disappointing reiew. sorry guys but you've lost a reader on this issue

black sabbath

i.m a run of the mill 40 something from the north of ireland. like many who read this mag i've enjoyed the heavier side of music for as long as i care to remember. my ultimate buzz has always been the original sabbath which led me after many years of trying to write a dark tale based on ten of thier early tracks which i am please to say i have recently completed after nearly three years of madness. because of the nature of the book i've found it hard to even get someone to read it on a professional level. i have come to the conclusion we are all supposed to be unemployed dope smoking hippies who's brains are fried after years of abuse. i guess i'm right in saying the majority of music lovers from my era are far from it, having grown up somewhere along the way does not mean you lose your passion for good old heavy rock/metal. i will persist and i will get published even if just to prove that headbanging(an old fashion term) never leaves you, even when you grow up

download reviews

Like many of the other people i was seriously disappointed to read the reviews from Download and it's just proved my increasing thoughts that Kerrang has become emo and pretty much crap. The pre-festival issue was a downer and the reviews!! Awful. I was starting to think that you couldn't actually have watched the bands!
As for Motley Crue getting slated for the stageshow, at least they had a show! Faith No More had a red freeking curtain and the vocals were not good - in my opinion.
I was so stoked about getting to see Limp Lizkit, finally, after years, and i could hardly hear Fred Durst most of the time - and I am not the only one who thought this.
I think the review was overly harsh about good perfomances and too kind to bands that quite frankly, i think suck. The Blackout, 4Ks are you shitting me?
Obviously i understand that people have different tastes and not everyone will agree with me, but reviews for some bands, such as the most excellent Crue were written by people who don't like them in the first place. How can you make comments about their age, when ZZ Top were also playing?!
I've lost all faith in Kerrang now. You need to sort yourselves out.

i would just like to say that for someone with such a provocotive metal experience, i am outraged at the fact that gordo was not present on the scene, also i would like to endure that Mr Kerrangs reviews on download were outrageously terrible, my balls were tingling at the very fact that journey were given 2K's!!!

WTF THE FUCK!?!?!?!

Cut Me some freaking Slack here!

Your busting my balls kerrang, busting my balls!

Basically, grow a pair of balls you bitch ass pussy munching, sack infested, emo bitch ass punks!!!! i buy Q magazine because its more fucking metal than Kerrang these days....

Download Reviews

Well Overall the reviews of the festival were terrible. Motley crue recieved a shit review which was entirely untrue.
Their stage show 'OTT', i mean WTF? Their stage show consisted of the stage back drop being the lettering 'LOS ANGELES' reversed, they played their classic songs more or less perfectly considering it has been nearly 30years since they began. It was said that it was a suprise that they were all still alive, what has that got to do at all with their overall performance?!
2K's?!?!? Shit!
Shinedown recieved 2k's aswell, stating that their performance was boring? It was the first time i have seen Shinedown play live and it was excellent. Their songs couldn't have been performed any better yet they still recieved a bad review.
If you are going to review the performances then it makes sence to get someone who actually enjoys the specific genre of music, if they don't then what the hell is the point of reviewing them at all?
Limp Bizkit recieved 5K's, this came as a suprise considering their performance left much to be desired. I was looking forward to watching them play for i was a big fan of the band and had been for years. Although after watching their performance they did not deserve the rating which they recieved. Throughout the majority of their set the sound of Wes's guitar drifted in and out, sometimes resulting in near silence. As for Fred Durts vocals, at points it was not possible to make out a word he said luckily enough i knew the songs.
Fair enough Slipknot and Def Leppard recieved 5K's which i agree with because they were completely amazing, and their overall show was epic!
Also The Prodigy recieved 4K's and stated 'At their best'? you'd think that being at their best they would have acheived 5K's. The only problem with The Prodigy's set was the fact that the volume was absolutely shit!! Anywhere past the centre of the crowd it was merely impossible to hear.
There is absolutely no point in reviewing a festival or the performances if the reviews are going to be entirely inaccurate, i mean come on The Blackout recieved 4K's? They didn't even deserve a fucking slot in the festival.
A few years ago Kerrang used to be a 'Good' magazine, a 'Good Rock' magazine although now it has simply sold out to the fucking emo's.
You are shit!

The poor quality of Kerrang's reviewing skills

Dear mr. Kerrang,
i would to express my utmost displeasure at how fuckin balls your reviews of download were.
I will begin with Motley Crue. You seemed to call their stage set 'O.T.T.' when all i happened to notice was a small backdrop which looked like backwards lettering of LOS ANGELES. yes i almost shat myself at how over the top that was. I also recall reading something about it being incredible they are still alive, which is quite irelevant. In my opinion they played all the songs people were there to hear quite excellantly, and they communicated well with the audience. Your review displeased me. If i ran Kerrang things would be different, they would still be a metal (\m/) magazine, which gave good bands good reviews, not sell out and only rate well the bands which are new, regardless of how good they actually were, simply because you feel bands like Motley Crue are outdated. I am not disagreeing with the fact you should promote new music, but not lie about how good a band actually was. I mean i saw the blackout... they were like a cumstain that wouldnt wash off... crispy, very irritating, nobody wants them and embarassing to be seen around. Yes, yes if i was Mr. Kerrang i would have things the way they were supposed to be, good music would be reviewed well and honestly, and id be on a beach somewhere surrounded by topless women all covering me in oil while i happily masturbate to the fact that there is a good magazine to read when i am satisfied. Metal Hammer still seems to know what there talking about most of the time, if they go as biased and poor quality as some of your recent issues, i dont know what i'd do! What the hell will i read while im taking a dump!? Either sort out your own magazine, or shut down and support metal hammer in order to keep them half decent. excuse me i must put the kettle on........................... yes, yes, you were good one day along time ago when men were men and i could buy your magazine without fearing that i would be seen on queer eye for a straight guy. I wank in the face of the modern Kerrang magazine (in a bad way). do try and be honest from now on instead of pointlessly trying to promote what your editors or reviewers think 'all the kids are into'.
Dont get me wrong its not just motley crue im referring to, i have many more examples, however they were the highlight of download for me, and i am running out of clever anicdotes to keep this comment fresh. so bye Mr. Kerrang, lets try and sort ourselves out a bit, eh?
ta.

Download Review

OK, OK - I will admit now that I haven't aaactually read this week's issue of Kerrang! yet, and I probably won't bother now thanks to these helpful reviews. The fact is, I basically only read the magazine for Pandora these days anyway.

It's true, the mag has became a big steaming pile of emo horseshit.

But yeah, the point I really wanted to make concerns one of the things I have read in these wonderful reviews, namely the fact that you slated Motley Crue's Download set for being "OTT"....erm, you DO remember the 'Carnival of Sins' yeah? Let me refresh your memory - the 'Crue's amazing come-back tour of 2005 which, if my memory serves me, Kerrang! crowned one of the must-see shows of the year?! Lest you forget K!, but that live show consisted of the 'Crue driving motorcycles on stage, smashing guitars, pyrotechnics (and lots of 'em!), fire-breathing midgets, contortionists, aerial acrobatics, dancers in full dominatrix attire, porn shown onscreen throughout and Tommy Lee's personal Titty Cam all under an elaborate big-top backdrop. You said that was a must-see show, and yet 'Los Angeles' spelt backwards was OTT?!

Doesn't that clearly show you just how much the mag (which I used to buy religiously) has changed in the past 4 years? GET IT FUCKING SORTED.

Lawnmower Deth

I hate to complain again, but I also just noticed only 3Ks for the magnificent Lawnmower Deth. Clearly another magazine/website that takes this band far too seriously to enjoy what was clearly one of the best sets of the weekend, 30 minutes of pure comedy-thrash mayhem. You describe their 'strange' impulse to reform with the insinuation that you can't understand why they'd even bother.

It was a bloody priviledge that they played this year, but yet again, you hideously dismiss/overlook them for whatever trendy fodder takes your fancy.

Anti-Flag!

Finally, a decent interview with Anti-Flag, tho I don't know why it went in the download issue, maybe for something decent to look at since download was pretty shitty this year. Those two pages will be a tear out & keep. Chris #2 is still so dam hot. Can't wait to see them a few times later in the year.

It's great to see more post-hardcore in the mag. Alexisonfire album is brilliant. Bands like Dead Swans and underground hardcore bands should get more space, instead on pop bands

You know I don't think that they should, thats the beauty of the underground scene, its all DIY. So these bands have to make there name heard and play absolutely anywhere just so more people hear them, they don't need to be published in a magazine. I believe that magazines like this no who to interview and who not to, and I think they're doing a good job of leaving the underground scene underground.

Download Tuborg BOTB winners ACiD DROP

I am dissapointed with your Download special. I ran out to my local shops to get the latest edition of K to see my band ACiD DROP reviewed in the 16 page special as we played on the Tuborg stage on Saturday.
Got it home zilch nada nowt, does K support up and coming bands or is it easy just to do the run of the mill stuff.
We were one of the only Punk bands at Download or is Punk uncool now.
