The Burning Question 7/7/09

This week's Burning Question:

GREEN DAY ARE CURRENTLY STREAMING SIX SONGS FROM THEIR FORTHCOMING ALBUM, 21ST CENTURY BREAKDOWN. DOES THIS ALBUM HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO BE EVEN BIGGER THAN AMERICAN IDIOT?

The new songs can be heard here.

Post your comments below and you could appear in next week's Kerrang! magazine.

Please remember to include a link to your MySpace profile so that, if we use your response, we can print a picture of you.

GREEN DAY

To be honest, i think Green Day are becoming past their sell by date. American Idiot compaired to their old stuff, was a complete let down, and i think their new album is going to be just the same, if not, worse. I think they should quit now while they are ahead. That or at least start writing some decent shit again.

green day burning question

oh my god yes. since american idiot the band have become huge and with all these new fans they're obviously going to get more publicity and become even bigger. its common sense when it comes to green day. fair enough if people think green day are becoming part of the new music phase, but isnt everyone these days. example, lostprophets. they've changed loads too, but still getting bigger and bigger. see what i mean?

I think its going to be a good album, not their best but the songs are decent. I don't think many fans will like it but its a new album deal with it, sounds change. I reakon one of them songs will be in a trailer for a movie or a soundtrack for something.

Green Day Predicitions...

FUCK YEAH IT DOES!

amercian idiot was a big leap for any band to take but it certainly delivered in all the right places. the subject matter might have thrown people off and the fact it was meant to be a bit of a story but it was still a great album that could stand on its own.

21st century breakdown will be another big leap, and green day aren't a band to disappoint their fans. it has been a long wait but thats what will make this release even more better. its'll certainly be quality

I hope not. I mean yes American Idiot was an amazing album, but the songs were far far too overplayed to the point where one week i was in love with one song and the next i hated it because i was hearing it like 5 times a day on radio or tv and it was starting to bug the hell out of me. Hopefully I won't get as fed up with this new album as I did with American Idiot.

I think that Green Day should have quit while they were ahead. They keep putting out average, irrelevant music that we do not need. Fair enough they were a path for some people to get into the rock/metal scene but frankly, with all the accessible music we have nowadays, we dont need them anymore. Throw in the towl Green Day

I don't really think Green Day could be as big now as they were back then. A lot of the stuff that's popular now is nothing like Green Day, old or new. Screamo and pop-punk is really what's in now rock-wise- And Green Day is neither. Not to mention, a lot of their old fans aren't happy with their new music.

With -American Idiot- Green Day have become very well known and apreciated worldwide,so that proved that ,in time ,they have only progressed. So yes, probably their new album will be at least as good as their last one.

I Wholeheartedly Love Green Day...
One Of The Finest Bands In History...
But,

I Have To Say That I Want This Album To Fail.

I Want Green Day To Drop A St. Anger.

Then In 2-3 Years The Bandwagon Jumpers Will Have Fell Off And The True Fans Will Be Clinging On...

Green Day MUST RETURN TO THEIR ROOTS!

This Sell Out Crap They Seem To Have Embraced Is Bad For Them And Bad For The Real Music Industry...

American Idiot Was A Step Too Far From Green Day's Real Style Of Music And In Comparison To Any Other Album, Even Warning (Which, At The Time Was Not Green Day Music) It Stands Alone. But Not In A Good Way...

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE JUST DROP WHAT YOU STARTED WITH AMERICAN IDIOT!

GO BACK TO BEING THE REAL GREEN DAY!

PLEASE!

It'll be tough for them to live up to American Idiot-I went to California in '05 and it was being played everywhere, seriously-but I think they can manage it.
And if the "old, real" fans can't take change, that doesn't really pick them out as good fans, does it? We should stickl by a band whatever they decide to do, because they're a band, not a genre.
Oh, and in maths, average is "expected". So if this album is average, to me it'll mean "awesome".
Oh yes.

Hmm, streaming 6 of those songs is pretty stupid if you ask me!
I'm sure fans'll be disappointed when they find they had nothing to get excited about.
Judging by these songs... the album will be crap. American Idiot was the best by far :).

Green Day are facing a problem - because American Idiot has had so much exposure and so many people love(d) it, everyone will compare their new album to it. To appease fans their album will have to be amazing - anything less than that and they may find themselves losing fans.

I think success wise the album will surpass american idiot becasue of the lagre and loyal fan base they have already built up, they will sell out wembly and alll gigs they put on. But the new album will not get as much crital aclaim as a masterpiece as american idiot relaunced their careers and gained them a whole new fan base.

The main reason American Idiot was such a success was because it was bashing the government in a time where nobody liked it. Bush was our president, for example.
While the new album has potential, it doesn't have a screaming hatred for the current president backing it up.

Seriously, when I found out that Greenday were touring, I was actually quite sad; In all fairness, I love their music but if they aren't going to tour ALL OVER THE UK instead of selected areas then I'm not sure that we can be dedicated fans any more? If they can't support us, then what goes around comes around.

GREEN DAY! GO FOR IT!

when you say the old songs are the best, you could well be wrong. green day bring us new and differant songs all the time. i mean, compare 'know your enemy' to 'boulavard of broken dreams' see what i mean? they have all sorts of songs, which makes it better for everyone! they also use that technique to increase their popularity. they are going up, just like band such as metrostation and fall out boy. they have all given us a range of songs, and so why complain? ive heard the biggest chavs listen to fall out boys 'i don't care'. therefore everyone like a bands particular song. :)

If Know Your Enemy is anything to go by, then it'll be good, but it all depends on the other singles. Good to see they're not totally abandoning what made them famous in the first place though.

American Idiot was always going to be a hard act to beat, and if the six singles are anything to go by, 21st Century Breakdown should be pretty good. I'm not completely convinced it has that much potential though.

I haven't and don't want to hear the songs yet (insert internet killing the music industry here), but I don't see it happening. American Idiot was a real "right place right time" phenomenon, and everyone else just jumped on the bandwagon. There's far too many new bands now for an album to get that big - music is a bit of a short term obsessionist culture for the moment, which rarely goes beyond a band's first single

of course they cant make as good a album as american idiot , thats impossible in my opinion. They said before there comeback that things with green day would be different so you can really compare the two albums , 21st century breakdown is amazing but.

gotta admit the new single is catchy as fuck however does it matter if the new album's more successful than American Idiot? In my opinion your a fan of the band or you're not. If you are you will probably buy it, if not don't! None of this *green day are wank now they sold out blahh* I've been a fan of them for a very very very long time and I stuck with them because they are bloody good live band, made two of my personal favourite albums 'Keplunk' and 'Nimrod' and at the end of the day, even a substandard green day album ( Shenanigans/Warning/even American Idiot (In my opinion)) is better than the majority of the whitewash, screamo/emo wank that is currently bloating up the rock scene.

Green Day

yes. green day have gathered so many fans over the years, especially due to American Idiot. They vary their style so much as well between albums, so it will just continue to invite new fans, and bring back old ones.

Green Day's song 'Know Your Enemy' is being played non-stop and much like their song 'American Idiot' it's become more and more hard to avoid listening to which is making the new album even more popular.

The Burning Question

I don't really think that 21st Century Breakdown will have the potential to beat American Idiot. American Idiot was a breathtaking album and it will be very hard to beat! I will be really surprised if this one is better!

The Burning Question - Definitley!

Definitely. The album has so much variety and there is something on it for most punk/rock fans.
I do think 21st Century Breakdown + American Idiot are grouped together as the same sort of type, like FOB Infinity on High and Folie รก Deux are grouped.
Changes of sound, but non less awesome than the albums before, just different =]
