Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich says he still can't understand why no other metal band has overtaken the group's popularity.

The group, who have been together for over twenty years, have sold over 100 million albums worldwide since they formed.

Speaking to the Guardian, Ulrich said: "I was thinking the other day about how everyone expects us to continue to release albums that define the genre, to 'save' metal. And that's a lot of fucking pressure, really.

“Why hasn't anyone dethroned us yet? We support all the great new metal bands, take them under our wing, but people still want us to carry the whole genre on our backs."

Talking during the band's appearance at last month's Reading and Leeds festivals, Ulrich also admitted that he found it hard to live up to the band's hedonistic past.

"I'm 44 years old, I've got three kids, I flew in a helicopter on Friday,” he said.

“It's a little difficult to revisit the vibe of 20 years ago when you're living in a two-bedroom suite at Claridge's. I live a very different life to how I lived then."

Obviously because they invented the genre, they've sold more records than any other metal band out there, and if you take their first 5 albums, plus (more than likely) Death Magnetic, its pretty much up there with the best metal acts of all time like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Slayer, etc.

The new breed will never overthrow Metallica - yes Trivium and Bullet For My Valentine may be doing well for themselves, but both divide opinion far too much to succeed - Trivium simply aren't individual enough and Bullet for me aren't archetypal metal. Even Slipknot don't get close to Metallica in terms of sales

The best metal bands these days don't sell the most records, that is fact. Meshuggah, Gojira, Mastodon, Lamb of God, Amon Amarth, etc. - all incredible acts in their own right, but never will they set the mainstream alight enough to even taste an inkling of Metallica's success. Never will it bother me though if such acts continue to crank out impressive records and continue to put on killer live shows.

I would say the band who perhaps most define the new Metallica would be Machine Head, yet none of these bands will get those album sales any time soon mainly because Metallica will sell a shitload on the name alone, look at St.Anger, as a stand alone it is awful, some would in fact argue that aside from a handful of tracks on 'Black' the genuis that was Metallica actually ended on 'Justice...'

I heard death magnetic online. It is like mixture of Reload and justice. Bad drumming, Real bad drumming. Better drumming would have made the album sound awesome.. Some nice riffs . The instrumental is more like to live is to die style. Long song. But till date the call of ktulu stands as the best instrumental by metallica. Unforgiven 3 is nice. Heard some nice lyrics. The end of the line is nice and groovy. hard riffs . once again good drumming would have helped. The day that never comes is nice. Kirk is back with his Kill em all and ride the lightning style solos. My apocalypse is hard hitting. Hetfield has lost power in his vocals. Cant blame him , his age is like that. Some times i think metallica should go back in to alcoholica days , so they came compose hard hitting stuffs. Over all death magnetic is a decent album . 6/10 i ll give ( would have given seven if Mr. Lars cunt had composed better drum line). I cant believe he made a guy who was inspired by him to play drums to speak bad about him.. Rob has done a nice work with his bass through out the album. and lars speaking about him being 43 and having 3 kids and seven wife dose not please any one. i wish he reads this post. Right this time i'm inspired to write my opinion. Hope this discussion hasn't quite died yet! Feel free to disagree but i think Metallica have constantly changed their image and sound to try and fit in with popular trends. Not all of their music stands the test of time and i think it's the name itself that sells the records.

Iron Maiden (love em or hate em) have stuck to their guns and have remained relatively unchanged since the eighties. they still sound the same and have long hair, spandex etc.
I know not everybody will dig bruce dickinson's cheesy whailing but at least he can still pull it off whereas i think hetfields voice is strained from all the booze.
Maiden have remained true even during metals darkest, most dire times.
I still have got time for metallica and don't think they are washed up quite yet but in my eyes maiden have way more credibility and still sit at the hypothetical throne of metal!

Not sure though Lerks that a lack of change is a good thing, evolution is critical in music and whilst I don't think Metallica have changed after every album (clearly St.Anger was a exception) they have evolved to keep a decent sound, sorry but for me personally Maiden are just boring now, I do agree though that they stick to their task where others would probably fold.

Bands who evolve get bigger, in fact artists like that old tart Madonna are a good example. Korn Slipknot, In Flames, Bodom, NIN, Bleeding Through etc are all good examples too in metal genres. One big band that has not is perhaps Machine Head and as yet it has not affected them too much.

Oh and please will the guy who said the next Metallica will be BFMV send me some of whatever you are on, legends in their own lunchtime!! The queue is very very very long for them.

Good point evolution is essential. I wouldn't have discovered half of the bands i love today if music and my own tastes had not evolved.
I think St. Anger was a necessary evil for Metallica. At the time, if it had come out a year or 2 before when nu metal was at its height we'd probably be singing its praises a lot more. It was however a big step away from the Metallica i loved. Maybe some bands that evolve should return to their roots, i hope death magnetic is more like early metallica.

Lars is a good drummer, James is a good rhythm guitarist, kirk is an okay soloist, never had a good bass player. james is a decent song writer. big whoop. they're just like maiden, just like every other band. two great albums, two okay albums, the rest is shat. Metallica may hold the reigns but that mirage is only in the eyes of untrue metal heads. True metal heads refer to Anthrax, Slayer, Maiden, etc. before even mentioning Metallica because they faded fast from their roots after the first two albums. JUST LIKE EVERY OTHER BAND OUT THERE. They don' t hold a candle to Nevermore or Nothingface.

I guess it depends on what you look for in music, clearly there are hundreds of bands who create more technically advanced songs than Metallica. However I don't believe that makes them a poor band, look at Nirvana, very very simple music in the technical sense but very appealing for the sound and emotion created. If Metallica came out today they would perhaps struggle to reach the top, however they have not been round 30 years by been a 'simple' band, their appeal is in there ability to create music that appeals to a massively diverse fan base, extreme and mainstream, old and new. On this point there are many bands who cannot achieve this, for me Parkway Drive are an immense proposition but you won't get Zane Lowe playing them on Radio1. Its a balance and Metallica tick a lot of the boxes, just not all.
