Maiden Heaven: Alternative artwork

Back in May we asked you lot to design a cover for Maiden Heaven, our world exclusive Iron Maiden tribute album that comes cover mounted on this week's Kerrang! magazine.

We were deluged with hundreds of pieces of brilliant artwork, but sadly there could only ever be one winner. Felipe Franco of Bogota, Colombia's entry was picked by a select panel of Kerrang! judges and Iron Maiden manager Rod Smallwood.

However, we though we'd take a moment to salute some of amazing works of art from the other entrants who were short listed.

Check 'em out below and comment away.

Maiden Heaven includes world exclusive performances from Metallica, Machine Head, Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold, Coheed And Cambria, Gallows and more and is in stores now.

Some good entries there, shame there could only be one winner - but A Goth's idea isn't a bad one at all.

Will finally get my hands on this CD tonight. Expecting mixed results...

I foudn the CD very mixed as expected because i'm not a fan of all the bands.

I expected the covers by Trivium, Machine Head, Black Tide, and Metallica to be very similar to the originals just with different vocal styles, and i wasn't too wrong.

The best tracks in my opinion are by Gallows, Year Long Disaster, Sign, Ghostlines and SHOCK HORROR...Madina Lake. Yes people Madina Lakes cover isn't that bad. I'm not a fan of them in any way but their cover of 'Today' by Smashing Pumpkins was great on the last cd kerrang gave away and they've done a damn good job on this aswel. But i expect many will hate it just because its ML and they're too 'emo/scene shit' blah blah blah.

The best tracks are those that sound different to the original, if you don't agree then just go listen to the original otherwise its a bit pointless in my opinion.

Maiden Heaven somewhat disappointing

All the big names on this CD deliver really good covers as usual, I really liked Machinehead's version of Hallowed be Thy Name and DevilDriver doing Wasted Years, although the chorus is a bit annoying. Trivium and Avenged Sevenfold were the biggest surprises, I'm admittedly not a fan of either band, but theirs are probably the best.
Every other band has completely murdered the Maiden songs they covered. True they might be different from the Maiden songs, but they make a mockery of classic Maiden songs. Madina lake = Emo, and Ghostlines = Ballad. Disappointing!

album art

Disappointed that my sons art work didn't make the list above. He is only 15 years old and had used a Cistine Chapel similar to Andreas Sandberg.

I think that maybe you should have age groups for these contests as most of the work above is obviously of an extremely professional standard and makes entering for younger, up and coming artists very disheartening.

Gods of Metal

I am quite a recent maiden fan, 3 years, but they are my favourite band and there hasn't been a day when i haven't listened to at least one of their songs. Wasted years is my favourite song. Devildriver's lead singer ruined wasted years...... what the @#$* all i can say is that the lead singer needs to learn how to sing, anyone can scream words till their voice is hoarse and sound like a complete retard. Of course no one can measure up to the mighty melodies of Mr Dickinson himself. best track on the cd? Hallowed be thy name- Machine Head, without a doubt. I really wanted this cd, especially after going to the twickenham gig, but at the end of the day, Iron Maiden are on a different plane to all other bands. I think everyone present at twickenham stadium on the 5th will agree that for them to still be this good after such a long time is unbelievable, and to still be able to put on such an absolutely awesome show to this day just goes to show that they really are gods of metal. Anyone who thinks otherwise, please come to my house and say whatever you want about Iron Maiden, really, my katana would really like to hear what u have to say. Artwork is awesome by the way, also some other awesome entries. Madina Lake's cover is actually quite good, a lot of people are slating them without even giving the track a chance. I'm not a fan but they haven't done a bad job. I just love maiden so much.

Madina's Maiden Cover...

The Iron Maiden tribute album is amazing... and I'm not even a Maiden fan! But one thing that's really bugging me is the way people are saying that Madina Lake's cover is crap, emo and whatever, just because it's Madina Lake, and so therefore they're not "allowed" to do metal etc. Give it a chance! The two twins of Madina Lake used to be in a heavier band so it's not exactly as though they're completely incapable of playing heavier music. Anyway, thanks for the album Kerrang!, it's awesome :)

Right so i bought this issue of Kerrang on a rare occasion that it had this Maiden tribute, the Master of Puppets tribute a while back turned out very good so thought i would give this one a try, some very good covers on this album, especially Machine Head's cover of Hallowed Be They Name, but i was absolutely sickened when i click play on Run To The Hills hoping to hear that iconic drumbeat we all know, but alas that never came, the song has been completely ruined and taken down from being one of metal's most iconic songs to the next emo anthem!
I'm Appauled!

Same old

Ok as a fan of Maiden for about a decade now, i may not be the best to comment on this but this is my pov on this cover album

Black Tide sounds exactly like the original, so not really a cover but it was ok

oddly Metallicas version sounded almost the same but i like the heavy intro to the song that lacks in the original

A7x has got FoTB off to a key, was highly enjoyable to listen to again and again

2minutes was ruined in the vocal department, they sounded like whiney gits on singstar for ps2

coheed made trooper their own. it rocked thats all i can say

wasted years was crap coz of not being able to hear the song over the screemo throatness of it

SIGN SHOULD BE SHOT FOR THAT FUCK UP. i know people say that for calling it the stereotyped emo crap. plain and simply it is...it is so crap its put me off normal running to the hills
and thats a bad thing...ARRRRGGGHHH!!!

dream theater was good

Madina Lake shocked me not a fan of their normal stuff this version of the song has made me want to hug them in the street

wraith child sounds as if it was lifted from a bootleg form the 80's aweness in a can

i was expecting fear of the dark to be shit...it wasnt...i bow down to busted front man here

MH was awesome so much better then the orig and possibly the best cover on the album

trivium cover woulda been awesome save the emoish screemo in the middle that wrecked the pent up "rockin out" vibe i had going

year long was a literal disaster...it sounded like a radio 1 live lounge cover with the indie band flavor of the week trying to be cool

and i agree ghostlines has made brave new world into a ballad...long and dull, wow i just yawned through it

ther ya have it...my views on that album

My personal opinion

OK here's my review of the album, since I am a HUGE Maiden fan:

Black Tide - "Prowler": I know they screwed up "Hit the Lights" by Metallica, but I really like these kids despite their Motley Crue-ness, and WOW they did a great job with the double leads on the main riff especially 9/10

Metallica- "Remember Tomorrow": I was expecting this to be crap since I gave up on Metallica a long time ago, but HOLY CRAP if the new album is this good then they have COMPLETELY renewed my faith in them, and I really loved the new heaviness in the intro
9/10

Avenged Sevenfold- "Flash of the Blade": Again, I gave up on these guys awhile ago, but their cover of this song is actually really catchy and fun to listen to, except for that stupid whiny harmony in the chorus, which almost ruined the song for me.
7/10

Glamour of the Kill- "2 Minutes to Midnight": Right away you know how shit the cover is going to be when they start off with "TWO - MINUTES TO MIIIIDNAWWWIIGHT!!!", in that god awful fake english accent pop-punk bands like to use. I mean I guess it's not bad for a cover but the vocals ruin it
4/10

Coheed and Cambria- "The Trooper": This is my favorite Iron Maiden song, and I am a huge fan of Coheed and Cambria, and I know that they are huge Maiden fans, so I thought that this would be a great cover. First of all, there is waaay too much gain on what should be a completely clean intro, but the thing that really gets me is that Claudio decided to use a really high pitch for the first verse, which everyone knows needs to be at most yelled, then there are a bunch of very C&C-style effects like a lightning bolt in the background, so i dunno it's very unique, just not very good, OH, and I almost forgot, they do the same thing as Avenged Sevenfold with the "Oh-oh-oh, etc." part, with the whiny harmonies, except it's even worse here.
4/10

Devildriver- "Wasted Years": Once again, I love this song, and I LOVE Devildriver, but again, they kinda screwed this up. At the very least they should have sung the chorus, but no, they scream everything. If they were going to scream, it would have worked better on heavier Maiden stuff like "Powerslave" or "Brighter than a Thousand Suns", but whatever... I guess the rest is good
5/10

Sign-"Run to the Hills": *siiiiiigh*. It is VERY, VERY RARE that a cover actually pisses me off, but, you'd think for possibly Iron Maiden's most popular song, they'd get a band to cover it WHO ACTUALLY KNOWS THE SONG!!!!! Literally, I had no idea what song it was at first because EVERYTHING is changed. No drum intro, no solo, but don't worry, they make up for it with a nice melodic (aka emo) intro verse over a guitar part that was never in the song, and then add a bridge with lyrics that THEY MADE UP, oh and to add the cherry to the shit sundae, they vocals are nice and "emotional". :) Honestly, piece of shit does not begin to describe how BAD this is.
0/10

Dream Theater- "To Tame A Land": This is by far the most obscure song on the album, and I do give them kudos for that, but 1. I'm not a fan of uber-prog metal bands like DT and 2. I really don't even like this song that much, because it's very long and repetitive. Other than that, it's pretty good, and the sitar thing they did was cool, but again, the vocalist tried to imitate Bruce too much and sort of ruined it.
6/10

Madina Lake- "Caught Somewhere in Time": I don't like this band at all, and this is by no means that great a cover, but I have no idea why but I actually somewhat enjoyed it, at least more than some of the other covers like this on the album, but eh
6.5/10

Gallows- "Wrathchild": Besides Metal, I also love Punk a lot, especially 80's-style hardcore punk bands, and this is sounds a lot like great crossover-hardcore bands like Municipal Waste and Biohazard. It also is the best unique take on a Maiden song on this album BY FAR, I just wish they kept that bass intro.
8/10

Fightstar- "Fear of the Dark": It's kinda ironic because my band covers this song, and one of our lead guitarist's favorite bands is Fightstar, and surprisingly, this is a REALLY good cover, especially right up to the second verse, but the vocals there are just ok, not bad, but not great, and that last scream is kinda lame, but otherwise I love it.
8.5/10

Machine Head- "Hallowed Be Thy Name": Machine Head is undoubtedly today's BEST Metal band, and HOLY FUCKING SHIT THEY KNOCK THIS OUT OF THE PARK. AMAZING, pure and simple, he can actually sing and REALLY WELL, not to mention that the last verse is PURE epic. Definitely the best cover on the album ... almost makes up for the Sign excuse for a cover, ALMOST...
10/10

Trivium- "Iron Maiden": Another band I have given up on because "The Crusade" album kinda sucked, but at least Matt Heafy screams again. However, it does not fit into this song, and again, ruins it. It's too bad because otherwise it would have been a good cover.
7/10

Year Long Disaster- "Running Free": Yet another emo/pop-punk band covering one of these songs, really nothing different from the rest, which is probably why I like it even less than the other covers like it, oh not to mention that it marks the return of the fake British yells.
3/10

Ghostlines- "Brave New World": I personally think that this is Maiden's best song since their rebirth with the "Brave New World" album, and I kinda like piano-ballads sometimes, so I kinda liked this cover, despite the fact that I have never heard of this band before, it gets a little boring, and they never speed up like in the original song. BUT the solo is really good, and overall it's worth listening to.
7/10

OK, so all the scores averaged together is 6.2666.../10, so about 6/10, and that is actually the perfect score for this album, because even though there are some REALLY good covers, they're weighed down by a bunch of shitty ones, ESPECIALLY that Sign covers, which should never be spoken of again.
