Iron Maiden: The countdown to Twickenham

This week's Kerrang! cover stars Iron Maiden literally can't wait to play Twickenham Rugby stadium this weekend.

The show, which will also feature sets by Avenged Sevenfold, Within Temptation and Lauren Harris, will, believe it or not, be the British heavy metal legends' first ever British stadium show.

"When we were booking the tour it did suddenly occur to me that this was our first one," says frotnman Bruce Dickinson. "I went 'Hang on a minute, this is the first one we've ever done'. And Twickenham seems fairly well set-up for it."

When asked what fans can expect from the show, Dickinson added:

"Well obviously [the Somewhere Back In Time] show (which is reminiscent of the band's now legendery 1985 World Slaver set-up). Nobody in the UK has had this show in anyway, shape or form yet. And we've made a few modifications to the normal Twickenham set-up that we hope will improve everybody's experience of it in terms of sound in terms of speaker positions and layout etc. We've tried to be a bit innovative about that. We are a live rock band and we want everyone to get it."

And bassist and founding member Steve Harris insists Maiden will be on top form for Saturday's gig.

"It's quite funny because I actually watched the Live After Death DVD a couple of months ago. I hadn't watched it for years, and I actually realised we're a lot better now than we were then," He says. "Not only playing wise, but the jumping around and Bruce's voice... Everything."

"I was quite surprised because I actually thought that was when we were at our best!,: he laughs. "I suppose 20 years of playing later we should be better really shouldn't we?"

For the full interview, and exclusive pictures, be sure to pick up this week's Kerrang! magazine.

Out tribute to Iron Maiden, Maiden Heaven, which features exclusive covers by Metallica, Trivium, Avenged Sevenfold, Machine Head and more will be given away with the July 16 edition of Kerrang! magazine.

Lauren obviously doesn`t know anything about music, if it wasn`t for Maiden most bands around today wouldn`t be here and she would be listening to crap like Girls Aloud.

Will probably be a good show. Don't think Avenged Sevenfold and Within Temptation should be supporting, though, they could have got some better bands than that...

I cant wait!, Camping out on the streets of London to go to this, more so for Avenged Sevenfold though clearly they should be supporting they'v done so much over the years, being up there playing with a band they idolise, im sure its hard knowing not everyones gonna like them! But il be there supporting them! Maiden will be amaing too .I agree with Sharon Maiden are an insperation to so many half the bands around now wouldnt be if it wernt for them.

That is right! if by now you don't know that the main players in the evolution of metal are
Sabbath, Maiden and Metallica then you don't know much. All those bands are the first one to admit Maiden influenced them so by your logic without Bob Marley reggae would be the same wouldn't it!

Twickenham Tomorrow

I'm looking forward to tomorrow, can't wait to see Maiden again and I'll be seeing them at Wacken at the end of the month!!

A7X are pretty good live, okay so they don't appeal to everyone and I expect there'll be a lot of older Maiden fans who won't like them, but I don't expect that'll bother them.

I also like Within Temptation and can't wait to see them either, the only downside is that I have seated tickets I'll be miles away from the stage!!

What an absolutely treeemendous show! These guys never fail to deliver nothing short of an incredible live show, hearing those opening "oOAAAHHooohaahoooh's" of fear of the dark echoing round twickenham will stick in my head for a long time now. Song of the show for me was without a doubt 'rime of the ancient mariner' what a fucking epic that was!

p.s-thought avenged sevenfold were fucking shit.

Iron Maiden Twickenham 5th July

Being an older rocker i have got to say that Avenged Sevenfold were pretty good at Twickenham last night although the two screaming girls at the back were a bit sad,you dont scream at a metal gig girls.

Maiden were awesome though,to see near enough the whole crowd shouting MAIDEN in unison was superb, even Bruce was taken a back.To many highlights in the set to pick one out.Fanastic night.

last night was fucking incredible to put it only briefly. I have to admit im not a huge Iron Maiden fan but i can now see how they became so big. Their show was spectacular and they kept the crowd on edge every single second. The support acts didnt even get bad press. i love A7X so i thought their set was pretty spectacular and i can say the same for within temptation.
The bottle fights were funny :} and i even got congratulated on my superb throwing.
To sum it up
Possibly, no, definetly the best gig EVER!

What an awesome show!

For me they played the perfect set, I enjoyed every showstopping second!

I used to be an A7X fan but they have gone downhill in my eyes, not a great set from them personally with too many new songs... which I don't like.

Withing Temptation were amazing and perfect on every song, Lauren Harris held her own out there as well.

But Iron Maiden though... no-one does a live show better!

Damn good show

To clear up some confusion, Avenged Sevenfold did not go off because of people throwing bottles. They went off because someone had passed out and they wanted to tell security without ruining the song, however, security took ages to respond and as it was their last song they decided to go off a little bit earlier. Big respect to them for doing that, however, the rest of the set was pretty mediocre in my opinion. WT were ok, atleast they had better sound than A7X and Lauren Harris.

Maiden, on the other hand, were fucking amazing. Rime was epic, and nice to hear some other songs for a change like Moonchild and the Clairvoyant. All in all, 10/10 for Maiden, and C- - See me after class for the support.

Twickenham Earthquake

The gig at the Home of Rugby, was an epic realisation of everything that heavy metal stands for, fighting for breath in a battlefield, warriors standing on the brink of infinity, gasping for water but not a drop to drink, it went off to an explosive start and finished with a roar that shook Twickenham to its very core! I'll be aching for days yet, but the memory of that night will last a lifetime, Maiden would Rock those nu metal kids down to their skeletons

Gig of epic proportions. Ya will never ever hear Rime of the ancient Mariner in its full 15 minuets long again ever in the UK. What a gig was absolutely amazing and support was mighty fine too. Not too keen on Avenge Sevenfold but have to admit................they were ok

Best Maiden gig I have seen and think this was about my 20th time I have seen them. They are getting better with age I swear

Well... THAT ROCKED!

Having spent a few days taking it all in, I have to say that Twickenham could very well be the Best Maiden Show Ever. From the mere moment the drapes came off all the stage set gubbins, to our old friends the Pythons singing us out with "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life", everything was amazing. So glad I got to see Rime and Powerslave live. Utterly fucking awesome.

I'm not a fan of A7X so my girl and I didn't watch much of their set, but we came in for the last two songs and the second-last one sounded OK. And I finally got to see Within Temptation who were fantastic, Sharon's voice is mana from the gods and the band were brilliant. I missed Lauren Harris so no comment here.

Got to say though: GET A GRIP!!! So some of you don't like Maiden, or don't like A7X, or don't like WT. SO FUCKING WHAT? I'm not a fan of A7X but I'm not going to come on here calling all A7X fans dickheads! Y'know what I do when I don't like a particular band? I listen to something else! Oh, and as for what influence Iron Maiden have had on rock and metal? OK, so Sabbath and Led Zep came before them, to name but two, but the fact remains that Maiden, love 'em or loathe 'em, are one of the major keystones in this genre, and people as far flung as Sum 41 and Marilyn Manson alike cite them as a massive influence on their lives and careers. Even nu-metal can count Maiden among its influences, alongside Run DMC, Madonna and, in Fred Durst's case, fecal matter. My point is that Maiden, like many other bands, have influenced so many acts in different ways. Just ask Within Temptation and Avenged Sevenfold.
