The Burning Question 07/05/2008

TWO MONTHS AFTER THE RELEASE OF GHOSTS I-IV, NINE INCH NAILS HAVE RELEASED THEIR NEW ALBUM THE SLIP FOR FREE VIA THEIR WEBSITE. IS TRENT WAGING WAR WITH THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?

Post your comments below and you could appear in next week's Kerrang! magazine.

Please remember to include a link to your MySpace profile so that, if we use your response, we can print a picture of you.

As much as i love Nine Inch Nails, i hardly see this as a fude against the music industry. If they wanted to spread music for free, they wouldn't of sold Ghosts in a way which made them earn over a million dollars for some instrumental tracks. Can't wait to hear the album though.

Alot of bands seem to be doing this lately, mostly through XFM n stuff. But tbh most people download their music for free so by releasing a free album bands are basically skipping the illegal bit!

I think that he's just making up for the lost time, but the fact he realised 2 singles for free before the album then releasing the album free as well, hes giving a big f**ck you to the record lables that have screwed his fans and many other fans over time and time again. We'll feel less guilty copying the cd off for mates and such with this album cause he ain't losing anything! I think it's great he's one of the few artists with the balls to declare a much needed war on today's music industry!!

Nine Inch Nails Lauch Burning Question

I Think The Recent Realease Of The New NIN Album Will Be A Major Set Back For The Music Industry Because NIN Are A Well Known Band And If People Where To Buy There Album It Would Cost Quite Alot Of Money So Nine Inch Nails Decided To Just Give It Away Because Its What People Want Really Thats My opinion Anyway

Cheers

Just goes to show that making music is not about making money. It pleases me when rich music artists realise they do not need more and are willing to contribute to the world their work without expecting to be paid for it. Fans will undoubtedly still spend money paying to see them perform live and purchasing merchandise. Maybe if more rich bands did this we could afford to spend more on the up and coming bands that actually need the money to fuel their careers!

For the last couple of years die hard fans have been seeking out leaked advance copies of albums on bit torrents. The majority of these fans still buy a hard copy of the album upon it's release. Trent is well aware of this fact and is releasing music in a way that the fans obviously want. A physical copy of the album will be onsale to buy in a couple of months and I bet it will still sell millions. Well done to Trent for making this release available to fans without the cashflow to keep up with every release. It sure beats feeling like a criminal for "stealing" it.

to be honest im not a huge NIN fan, but i think they realised it due to them having to many ideas for 1 album, either that or they where shouted at in the street by an angry homeless man with a magic rock in his hand demanding that they make another album, you know how these things can be homeless people with magic rocks are always demaning more NIN albums

recording artists receive next to nohing for c.d.'s they produce ,so he probably is making a statement against the music industry.

The only money made is from touring.

Trent is god

i think you really can't call this an attack on the music industry. Trent has never been one to take the most travelled way of doing things. Plus you have to also realise that radiohead did something similar when they told their fans to pay what they wanted for their new album. I think trent is just in touch with the fact that everybody is downloading and is pissed off when you have to pay so much to listen to your favourite band. I see it as more of a thank you to the fans. Plus because its only been two months its would be really rude to ask his fans to buy another record.

I don't think it's Trent's intention to start a war with anyone with this. He probably just thought it's the easiest and most convenient way to get NIN's music out there and heard, and it's a nice way to say thank you to their fans. Hardcore Fans (and there are quite a few of those) are still gonna buy the album on CD and/or vinyl anyway, go to their gigs, buy their merchandise etc. So the music industry still gets their fair share.

He's not waging a war against the industry so much as stepping up to lead the industry. The music industry is changing. If someone, like Trent, does not take a leadership role and usher in the "new and improved" way of doing things then the industry will continue to collapse as it has done in recent years. I applaud his efforts to blaze a new trail.

don't get me wrong, i think any free albums/download etc are admirable, but i think he's doing it to get a reaction. and frankly, now that EVERYONE is doing it, it's nothing new, original or exciting. radiohead were the pioneers, and for that reason, they've taken all the credit for it.

Only God knows whot'a going on in that man's silly little head....
maybe he IS waging a war on the music indusrty,
maybe he was drunk and dont want to go back on his words,
maybe it's a prank and it's not really their last album that's up for download but it's the latest mCfly single,
maybe he's being forced to do it just to shift the leftovers of the album that didn't sell......
in any case we'll never know for sure....

Revolution

During With Teeth and Year Zero Trent made it clear that he thought his fans were being ripped off with the sale of his records and can see why people turn to illegally downloading. We are paying to much for cds. Everybody knows when we purchase one, most of the money is going to the studios and not to cover costs of materials used. By having this free enterprise NIN is able to have involvement of the fans more than any band to date. NIN has built a remixing community , where people can use the music material and not fear getting into trouble. Also its bringing music back to basics - about the art and not the money its set to make. War? No. Revolution? Yes

As a Music Industry Management student I feel that Trent is not 'waging war' or anything close to that. He must realise that there is not much money to be made in CD's these days, therefore giving away the CD for free. This will encourage fans to come and see the band live and spend money on tickets and merchandise. The live industry is booming at the moment and Trent must realise this.

If not, he has his other reasons.

He probably cares about the fans enough to let them have a free album.

I think he just cant face the fact there are so many other bands out there that are doing better than his.
Giving away your songs for free through MySpace or your website is what a lot of younger bands seem to be doing lately. He's just another attention seeking frontman jumping on the bandwagon.

Not so much war, but it's a good example of how artists can take back the power for themselves.

Giving away free albums is less solution more extremeism, get everyone talking about the topic and the pro's and con's of the record industry as it stands now.

It seems to of worked.

In my eyes the solution starts with a collective of artists who have already earned their bread, and THEN some to put something back into it to get albums from bands released for as sustainable a price as is possible, that means a cut for the artist, and all overheads involved with releaseing records (printing, shipping etc.) a strictly non-profit venture for those daring enough to put in the groundwork for the future enjoyment of billions around the world.

I think this works for bands or artists who have already aquired some "name value". There is no doubt "the industry" has changed and is still changing. I believe part of the move is a reaction to feeling controlled by an outside entity and lets face it " people and artists in general, don't like being controlled. More than anything I believe we need to THINK and LIVE outside of the box, and never start believing GREAT MUSIC is MADE FOR FREE! -Long Live Rock and Roll ! ! !

i realy do belive

i realy do belive that if he is wageing war with the music industry, then he would have at least made contact with alians, its only logical. we would know he had done this if there was some kind of electrical shortage were he lived. allsow for war one would need a lot of guns an shizz but as its a industry that he may b waging war with then u may just need some USB sticks. i think a wepon that NIN will use is that homer simpson mentions NIN in a Simpsons episode... wether the music indistry will be prepaired for a blow like this, who can say but, if all els does fail and NIN is destroied by the armys of the music indistry then im fairly convinsed that trent would put up quit a last stand, e seems prity hench like that.
so, who am i to suss out what an evil warlord like trent leading the mahusive armys of NIN will wage full skale war or mearly a little punch up.

I think that what he's allowing fans to do isn't much different to what fans would do anyway. You get some dedecated people who will go out and buy every last album, but the majority of people nowadays will just download all the tracks after finding out the list, or else borrow the CD from someone else and burn it. It's a fact of today that that is how people will usually act; it means they don't spend any of their hard-earned money.

No he's not waging war on the music industry, he's just offering fans something back in return for all the support they've given him and the band over the years.

People might say 'well Radiohead did it first...' and you can't take that away from them, but Trent publically slated the way they did it because the free download was of very low quality (below CD quality). NIN's new album is available in loads of formats from CD Quality to a stupidly high quality version.

The fact of the matter is like Radiohead, NIN's album is going to get a physical release in July. It's innevitable that the sales of it will be lower due to the free download, but Trent won't care (he's loaded as it is). The guy is a GENIUS, he truely loves what he does for a living and i'm sure as long as his music keeps on reaching people and influencing them he'll stay happy and keep making it.

Fan Fairness

I think what they have done is very clever. By releasing Ghosts they got their money and fans interest, but by releasing new material for free they are showing to the fans that they are not all for money and are considering the fans.

perhaps a review of british bands?
would be nice to here about them rather than mainstream US bands like MCR (im not picking on them before anyone starts just first band to spring to mind)
id just like to see british bands promoted once in a while

I think not

NIN will still tour, making millions in tickets and t-shirts.

By distributing the music on the internet, there are fewer overheads such as CD pressing, marketing and so on and once all that is paid for, the artist is left with very little out of the sale of a CD.

The new music is an incentive for fans see the tour which can be more lucrative for the artist, and any losses made from the production costs of the music can probably be written off as a tax loss against the profits of the tour if you have a clever accountant.

So rather than declaring war on the music industry, maybe he is trying another business model which may prove to be more lucrative for him. And good luck to him.

I Think It Shows He Is A True Musician, There To Get His Message Out And Be Heard, Not To Make Money.
More Bands Should Do This.
And Yeah, Free Album Woo-Hoo!

The Burning Question.

Well obviously the music industry isn't exactly going to be esctatic about it, but I think making a free album is a good idea, so long as it's a one off. Otherwise, no one will buy music anymore and smaller bands who need the money to carry on playing will suffer.

Trent Reznor

Who gives a shit if he is waging a war with the music industry?
He is simply giving something back to the fans who have bought every other album.
Other bands should take note.

The Burning Question.

I hardly think he'd be waging war with the music industry.
As for people saying they're playing into the hands of music thieves and not getting a paycheck for their hard work, boo hoo.
They're giving something back, I mean do you think their profits stop at CDs?
They're loaded, what the fuck more do they need?
We've supported his drug habits and rehabilitation and he's still had money left to wipe his arse with.
I think it's about time he gave something back, and I think it's a good thing.
Don't look a gift horse in the fucking mouth.

Crikey mate, a NIN album merely 2 months after the last one? Next they`ll be releasing albums every second! Either that or he just wants to be Venetian Snares, releasing 2 albums in the same year 8]

Either that, or GarageBand or whatever the hell MacBook program he`s using now is making music-making quick and easy XD
