My Chemical Romance speak out!

My Chemical Romance have issued an official statement about recent suicide of 13 year old Hannah Bond.

According to British tabloids such as the Daily Mail, Bond allegedly killed herself after "she started following US band My Chemical Romance" and "started cutting her wrists [as] part of an initiation into the emo fashion."

"We have recently learned of the suicide and tragic loss of Hannah Bond," wrote the band on www.mychemicalromance.com. "We'd like to send our condolences to her family during this time of mourning. Our hearts and thoughts are with them.

"My Chemical Romance are and always have been vocally anti-violence and anti-suicide. As a band, we have always made it one of our missions through our actions to provide comfort, support, and solace to our fans. The message and theme of our album The Black Parade is hope and courage. Our lyrics are about finding the strength to keep living through pain and hard times.

"The last song on our album states: 'I am not afraid to keep on living' - a sentiment that embodies the band's position on hardships we all face as human beings. If you or anyone that you know have feelings of depression or suicide, we urge you to find your way and your voice to deal with these feelings positively."

In related news, My Chemical Romance fans are organising a march across London this weekend to protest against the Daily Mail's repeated, and wholly inaccurate, demonisation of the New Jersey rockers.

For one, The Daily Mirror were not anything to do with this, it's the Mail, get your facts straight before shouting off. 2) They do have a right to say anything, its called freedom of speech and finally, Emo Is wrong, but only if the stereotype of it is followed e.g. The whole "I hate myself, I am different to everyone and no-one understands me but its everyone else fault, I am gonna cut myself whaa whaa." Otherwise, emo's who just follow the music (even though in MY OPINION is crap) follow emo fashion etc, thats fine. Also, please cheak your damn writing before you post!

I'm going to go ahead and say it right out: If you cut yourself and dress in black and whine about the world around you, you seriously need help. MCR has okay music, but to me, they look like they dress to be a knight of Stalin's 'honorable' guard. Like faschists in training and the emo subculture is absolutely silly and rediculous. Goths I have some respect for as they can at least have honorable and well-spoken views. I whole-heartedly agree with the Russian Government. Emos ARE a danger, okay? Anyone who whines like a little bitch and are against free speech against them deserves to go to what a YouTube 'friend' of sorts calls a 'happy camp'.

Is anyone seriously taken in by this latest round of media led toss?

I came across this subject through a younger relitives copy of Kerrang (yes, I'm - really old!) and this is the same old crap that was being levelled at Ozzy Osbourse in 1982!

In the early 90's they blamed Nirvana for suicides - before that Danzig were turning everyone into satanists - before that Iron Maiden were doing the same - go back another 20 years and the popular bands of the time were going to cause the end of civillization through casual sex and drug abuse (although the kids doing that stuff are now running the country so maybe they were right!)

Hell - in the 50's people wouild protest against the corrupting influence of Elvis and his scary pelvic moves.

The media like nothing more than to add the latest face to an age old demon.

Keep the public outraged and fearful and they will continue to be willing and obedient consumers.

couldnt of put it in better words, i must say its amusing fiding out im not the only older person on this site...haha. i would also like to mention there was an incidence with Marilyn Manson about one or two teenagers killing people with guns in there school, or something like that, and i think people are missing out on something else...Films...i know there was and incidence were kids younger than 13 had seen a horror film (dont know which one) and had peformed a sinnister act on a toddler resulting in its death. Films are just as bad, if not worse.

I think it was a nicely worded statement from a band who really don't deserve this.

The Daily Mail are constantly looking for their scapegoats and to enforce moral panic any time they see fit. Ironically they chose a band who proclaim themselves to "want to save your life" and have proceeded to save many of their fans lives through the music and their strong anti-self harm message.

If the journalists in question did an ounce of research they'd know that TBP is an uplifting album that centers on living your life.
I still to this day deny that MCR can be called "Emo" as the genre itself cannot be defined properly. In terms of music i can see the reasoning but not in terms of the "emo culture", something which MCR and the fans want to distance themselves from.

Unfortunately I doubt that even the protest will stop the narrow-minded tory toss that spews from the daily mail, a retraction, however would be well deserved.

If you don't like MCR then fair enough, but can you not grasp the concept that fans of MCR like myself can also listen to metal and other genres of music? If you were saying this about FOB (despite me being a fan) the articulate term "money-grabbing cunts" may apply but i dispute the fact that because a band releases a live dvd they are pedalling for more money.
Not all bands offer free downloads but i agree that it would be a positive step if the prices were lowered on all merchandise.

Under your ideology then any band that releases anything for money would be a money grabber. And i don't see why a band member's wife has anything to do with the music myself.

I also doubt that the negative publicity that has occurred will do anything to benefit the band's sales as ignorance will probably stop people from buying, under the impression, with their trust Daily Mail in hand that the band are an evil suicide cult out to kill them.

Yes i agree that there is alot of narrow-mindedness around, including mcr fans. A minority gives us a bad name with their limited knowledge of music and slender grasp of grammar when trying to argue their point.

I disagree that fans would buy anything, but if you look at fans of any band you must agree that the majority do buy lots of mechandise. KISS fans for example would still buy a new album of exactly the same songs, only being recorded by two new members. (i'm not necessarily saying this is a bad thing) so it's not limited to MCR fans.

And okay, would you like photographic proof of that then dear? As puberty happened quite a few years ago for me.

In regards to the mass suicide thing, it's a fabrication. A sarcastic couple of videos made by non-mcr fans just to fuel the controversy a little more.

The only truthful information regarding the march is on whatthefrank.com, everything else is potentially fake.

I fuckin hate MCR, they are a shit band

BUT....

of course thier music didnt want to make this girl kill herself, thats ridiculous. I'm a journalism student and you need to know how newspapers work....

If the headline was 'young schoolgirl kills herself' it might sell some papers, but if the headline was 'young schoolgirl kills herself because of [scapegoat] emo cult and MCR', they will sell a lot more.

the suits who own newspapers have no idea about teenage culture, they are just writing whatever they can get away with to sell as many papers as possible.

i find them bloody funny to be honest, in the best possible way.
infact i find myself looking at these articles on my chemical romance and fall out boy, just to read his opinions.
lets face it the bands don't read these pages, so they arn't going to get upset over it. so maybe instead of defending their honour so well and getting into an argument and getting all upset just accept not everyone thinks the same.

Go MCR!

I think that was well said! There has to be another reason for Hannah and others killing theirselves, no one should blame a band or their music. The only person to blame for someone's fate in this instance is the person who committed suicide, no one else is to blame. And as the band says the last song on that album says it all, if Famous Last Words doesn't prove a point I don't know what does.
Something like this causes uproar all the time, and yes someone has to be blamed, it's part of the grieving process but has no one ever thought of looking at what has happened in the past to the person who committed suicide or the possibility of them being bullied; Because it wouldn't surprise me if she was because of today's society and the way the youths of today judge eachother by how they look? Obviously not because MCR are being put to blame again. These bands do what they do because they enjoy writing and making music not because they want to make someone commit suicide through it!

Do you really think every business decision is okayed by MCR? Although you're quite understandably vexed at the possible exploitation of MCR fans, I doubt MCR are the ones you should be venting your anger at as they're so big now they'll have other people to delegate that sort of work to.

MCR are heroes because they create and have new ideas, they don't sit around attacking other people's ideas

Love to MCR, to the person who wrote such an eloquently worded statement, to the fans going on the march and to all those who'll be there in spirit!

It was only a matter of time before they issued a statement - and it was a very decent one too. Mature - not just Way screaming 'this is absolute bullshit'. You have to have some respect for them.

i think this whole let's target bands because of the music they play it nonsense becaus ei listen to music like My Chemical Romance or Fall Out Boy but i don't cut myself because the whole thing about calling people emo if they cut themselfs is stupid. Emo means a lot of different things. I feel sorry for My Chemical Romance and Any other bands that have been put in the same shoes as them. I also feel sorry for Hannah's family and friends but i Don't feel sorry for the Daily Mail This has to stop. News reporters always target bands. WHY???

its statements like that which show beneath the whole rockstar image there are people that feel bad that a death is being blamed on them.

i think its bad that the media steryotype 'emo' and worry about that when there are more important things to be worrying about than giving teenagers a bad name.

i hope the mcr fans and any anti-emo folk do all of us kids who at some point have been the victim of pointless prejudice,do us,themselves,and more importantly the lives taken,proud.

I'm going to get totally slated for saying this, I hate MCR! But, in the defence of them, as human beings, I think it is disgusting for a journalist, who obviously has not looked entirley into the situation to turn around and blame a band who I think our succsessful for a reason more than the "emo" genre! To blame human begins who are good at what they do, that not being to promote self-harm and suicide is disgusting and feelingless!

Daily Mail and co are pathetic and biased. They speak about emo as if it's a cult or religion or something, and not just a style of music and fashion. With all the "welcome to the black parade" nonsense, they seriously should be sued for spreading such crap.

Even if they were true about emo bands and they did make people suicidal, it was Hannah Bond's choice to listen to it and get involved, so the music didn't exactly make her listen to it, she chose herself. She chose to self harm. She chose to be suicidal.

Why don't they treat chavs this way? They get pissed and take drugs, and no one looks at that aspect.
