MCR fans march tomorrow

My Chemical Romance fans are organising a march across London to protest against right-wing newspaper the Daily Mail for their repeated, and wholly inaccurate, demonisation of the New Jersey rockers.

In August 2006 the tabloid wrote an article describing emo as "a dangerous cult" that "is a celebration of self harm" spearheaded by "emo bands like My Chemical Romance and Green Day."

Earlier this month the paper revived its "War On Emo" by blaming MCR for the suicide of 13 year old Hannah Bond.

"The Daily Mail has repeatedly attacked MCR," reads a statement on MCR fansite www.whatthefrank.co.uk which is coordinating the march. "Enough is enough, these boys have worked so hard to keep us out of harm and away from suicide. It's time we bounced back. We need to stand up and let the world know MCR's positive message."

The march will begin at 10AM on Saturday May 31 at Hyde Park's West Pond and will end outside the offices of the Daily Mail in Derry Street, West London.

For a start, if you were aware of the context of some of the lyrics you're posting, you would know that a good deal of these come from a concept album.

Allow me to repeat: CONCEPT ALBUM. Go look it up if you don't know what it means.

As for the rest... Are you really suggesting that because somebody writes about their own personal experience and emotion that they are *glorifying* it? I think MCR's high-profile work with anti-violence (violence towards others or self) causes far outweighs anything a miserable pedant such as yourself could read into the lyrics.

Okay. I can't be bothered to argue. It's too early in the morning but...

You are being insanely ridiculous. Most of the lyrics you wrote are from songs from an album that has a FICTIONAL concept. In TBP Gerard has put himself in the place of a dying cancer patient. I don't think if you were dying of cancer you'd be completely happy either.

MCR have done it extremely well in my opinion because a cancer patient WOULDN'T always be hopeful. They know/think they;re going to die so sometimes there will be negative thoughts but you have to remember through this album, there is a constant underlying hope.

In live shows, Gerard ALWAYS talks about how if people are depressed or know people that are depressed they should talk to someone, or get some help. They wrote a song called "It's not a fashion statement it's an effing deathwish" about slitting your wrists.

If you take out the main vocals in Cementary Drive you can hear them chanting "Don't Do It" as in Don't Slit Your Wrists or Don't Commit Suicide.

Gerard himself has said that he is fascinated by death, but it's not something he promotes. In their songs, My Chemical Romance explore the concepts of death and what might happen or lead people to it. They are in no way telling people to go and commit suicide. Gerard gas been through some hard stuff, and he is going to write about the feeling's he has expressed but again...

They are NOT promoting suicide. I have never heard them anywhere tell someone to slit thier wrists.

In fact, My Chemical Romance are the most anti-self harm band i've ever known.

Most of My Chem's songs are fictional anyway, and the lyrics you sed were completely taken out of context in the most part.

So before you come wasting your time on message boards about bands you don't even like. Get your facts straight.

well well well....I wonder how this went? Unfortunately, musicians and writers usually use topics which are well known to their hearts. If Gerard Way has, in fact, written about suicide et all, fine, fair enough.

The thing is you lot who say he IS glorifying suicide, you need to look at the bigger picture. I love their music, Gerard has a fantastic voice. It's the depressed and suicidal people out there who listen to the lyrics and either a) take them to heart and see them as promoting suicide and/or b) have gone past the point of return, and would have killed themselves, no matter what they listen to. You don't see people in the paper for killing themselves but a lover of Classical music huh? That's just seen as "oh, what a shame"....bring Rock and Roll into the picture and "They worship the Devil!"

It's our media who need to get their facts straight, and think about who they're accusing, because majority of suicides, no one knows the real reason as to why it happend....because they listened to MCR? Yeah right! Bunch of numptyfucks they are.

Besides, the only reason that MCR was targeted was because a friend of that girls (who funnily enough, I live 10 mins away from her area) put on a card on a bunch of flowers "Hope You Enjoy The Black Parade"

Yes!, its about MCR fans did something about the Dail Mail, they have been picking on MCR really badly over the past couple of years and I really think SOME of there writers need to be taught a lesson in not writing crap and writing the truth about them.

I rwad a comment earlier about saying they were doing this but i just thought it would be a few people or so but I didnt know this was going to be a big thing.

I think all MCR fans from all over the UK should make there way down to London for the protest, the MCRmy has a strong bond with eachother and with enough people we can really show people what we hav to say.

Im a huge My Chemical Romance and love them with all my heart and would do anythhing for them.

Oh and let me just say, if your not an MCR fan, please, please dont comment in these forums, u know some of u dont like them but dont go saying pathetic little comments like:

"Maybe they could throw themselves in front of a bus in protest"
and MCR are for little 12 year olds, GROW UP!

This is so stupid. A march against the Daily Mail?
One woman writes an inaccurate article about emo culture and now the Daily Mail is "Nazi Headquarters" as someone just said. How many of you have even glanced at the article in the first place? It seems to me like you just want something to hate and this is a great excuse.

Having a "march" is only gonna make yourselves look stupid and even more of a cult, which is the thing you're trying to disprove, right?

If I was a fan of My Chemical Romance I'd be so embarrassed by this. In fact, because I'm a teenager who listens to alternative music, I get labelled with this trend. So it is embarrassing.

Sigh. The Daily Mail is a right wing conservative paper aimed at the middle classes, which would be the parents of most of the emo kids. I can see the headline now:

'Look what your children are doing! Suicide cult marches on Mail offices! House prices fall!'

There are a great many better things to march in support of. The thousands of people being left to die by the Burmese government, for one. So why not show that emos care about something other than themselves and what people think of them and march on the Burmese embassy instead?

I'm middle class, and hate the Daily mail thanks. The Guardian is much better. Anywhoo, I am a long time admirerer of My Chem (4 years), and this protest sounds alittle bit silly. I mean of all the troubles in the world ( wars, poverty, earthquake disasters..etc), and we're protesting about some worthless, badly written newspaper not liking mulimillion platnium selling band? Wow! I wonder if Gerard will fly over from the states and present us with medals? I mean have the band themseleves mentioned anything about this protest? No.
Yes the daily mail are in the wrong (as ususal), but who cares? I mean Metal and Rock N Roll has always been hated and slammed by various medal associations, isn't that the point of it all? I really admire the fans (if I'd known about it sooner, I'd've been down there) for actually showing some backbone (the world could use a bit more backbone sometimes, I feel) and standing up for what they believe in, but I'm a little saddened to find that rock fans now care what mainstream society thinks of them.

MCR are a great band, and i think that they have helped many people. and i also believe people should have thier opinions, but is there really any need to broadcast rude and offending comments on a magazine websites? keep it to yourself.

And to be honest i think this march is a great idea. Hannah obviously had problems, and MCR were her favourite band, so its like a disrespect to her memory if people are slagging them off, when it wasnt even thier fault she killed herself.

What annoys me is the self serving nature of all of this. It's the typical 'no-one understands me' bullshit that's been around for years. I remember when it was the Manics that were causing cutting, then it was the Goths who got in the neck, etc. It won't change. Emo intrigues me, because it's one of the oddest offshoots of punk/metal so far. It's got roots in Goth and pop-punk, yet doesn't have the vibrancy of either. It's also more 'uniform' than either. If it wasn't for the dress style, it'd just be the Manics all over again, but without the passion.

If we're talking about My Chem you're right that there's a definite transfusion of style. The lead guitarist Ray brings in the metal influence, while Frank the rhythm guitarist is the punk kid of the band, and of course Gerard adds the whole gothic glamour.
And personally I think My Chem is the only band for this to really work with (obviously it's not going to be to everyone's taste though and I'm cool with that :p)

Back in the days when MCR released their first album there was none of the emokid "omg their so hawt!!" following that they have today. Inevitably the band couldn't stop this from happening as they signed onto a major label but really, I think a lot of the reason why MCR are condescended so much today is because a couple of fans give the image that we're all immature little kids.

I'm just hoping that while the band are on their break now the ones who only like them for their looks will move onto the next trend...!

An inadvertant coincidence, I assure you. I was referring the spate of Norwegian church burnings that the Nowegian black metal scene was famous for in the early 90's. One of the few times the villifying of metal in the press was somewhat deserved.

For all those people who commented saying that the march is pointless and that it won't make a difference ect. the point of it is to make a stand for what we belive in. Having your favourite band constantly being discriminated is not something most people would would watch happen without making a stand. We're just standing up for what we believe in. And if the daily mail continue to write more articles at least we know that we tried, we made an effort, we stood for what we believe in.

Also, to all the fishes up who have been commenting about all the 'teenies' and 'thirteen year olds' who listen to my chemical romance you need to get a life. I'm not a 13 or anything myself, but i was once and so where you! And you listened to music when you where 13 so why shouldn't they be entitled to listen to whatever bands they want too, without being critised for their age? It's unfair and it's disrespectful. This whole thing about emo being all about self-harm and suicide has been said by newspapers a thousand times before and is bound to get mentioned a thousand times again. I can remember when all the stupid girlie magazines ran articles on the danger of emo's, etc. A hundred and one different bands have been blamed for numerous suicides over the world but just because MCR have been blamed once or twice, everyone is having a fit about it.

I like MCR, and I am a fan, so don't go starting on me about being a hater. I am pretty pissed at what's been said. But srsly? Marching against the Daily Mail? Are you a bunch of idiots? The bunch of you altogether marching as one is gonna reinforce what the media is saying about a "cult". It's gonna give them more reason to call you brainwashed and whatever.

it a good idea but as soffi said do you chavs are going to sit by and watch? they won't they'll will try and piss you off in whatever way and you won't be able to retaliate coz the daily mail will say your dangerous and violent and "forget" to mention what ever the chavs did. is that gonig to make things better?
bit if that doesn't happen then it a really good thing to do. maybe it will show that not all teenagers are brain dead and that we will stand up for what we believe in, what ever the risk. unfortunately i can't go :(

MCR Protest

It refreshes me to see that MCR detractors worldwide, and those calling this protest "gay", are still stroking my superiority complex and reminding me how blissful it is to have a brain in today's world.

Why don't you go rub your dog excrement into your own face, add to the shit you've got for brains? And stop dumping on people who are standing up (and admirably) so for what they believe in. At least they know how to exercise a democratic right, which I'm sure you'd be doing if you weren't sitting in the corner smoking and/or beating up the gay kids and/or feeling immensely superior for being a sheep and wearing a Slayer hoodie.

MCR have only ever aimed to help, inspire, and encourage and the way in which they've been scapegoated is disgusting. I fully support this protest and would be in attendance if I lived in the UK. It's nice to see K! helping to promote it too-cheers everyone!

The standard of British journalism has reached an all time low with The Daily Mail.

MCR is about finding hope in dark situations, not glorifying death. The Daily Mail completely twisted their lyrics and message and that's just wrong.

Journalists need to do their research and stop blaming bands because bands aren't responsible for the actions of another individual.
Hopefully with this protest we'll be able to send that message loud and clear.

I just hope it's going to be peaceful
