"Emo" fan suicide

Newspapers and sites around the world today are reporting about the recent suicide of 13 year old Hannah Bond.

Her tragic death is being blamed by mainstream media on the "emo culture" and in particular Hannah's love of My Chemical Romance.

See stories from THE TELEGRAPH, THE DAILY MAIL and THE LONDON LITE.

Kerrang! asks, why do you think that this genre is continually blamed for teenage suicide and self-harm?

I think that people assume that, if someone is emo, they're automatically depressed and self harm. If people knew more about self harm, they'd know that it doesn't just affect "emos", and most bands that people call emo don't encourage self harm, they try and help people to be less depressed. They don't encourage depression. Why are people so narrow minded they don't see this?

Emo Suicide (sounds like a Death Metal song title...)

My Chemical Romance's lyrics often deal with a very realist, slightly angsty, outcast-centred point of view, and they're gonna get that association just like Placebo or Marilyn Manson would've done. When a fan of a band who appealed to them because they summed up their worldview and it wasn't a happy one is depressed, people will go "Well, shouldn't listen to that awful, miserable music then, that won't help. You're wallowing in your own misery."

I don't much like My Chemical Romance, but that's how it is with me and Bright Eyes.

Such a tragedy, and I truly feel for the parents, however, they should’ve acted when they became a wear she self-harmed, to just tell her “don’t do it again” is far from an adequate solution. Hannah may have cut herself due to the “Emo” fad or she may have had deeper issues, but either way it’s a call for help and her parents should have recognized that. One thing we need to realise is that people have always had emotional issues and mental health problems; self-harm has been happening for years and is by no means a “new craze,” it’s only glamorised in the “Emo” culture because the are normal young, look great and into a popular band, which all-in-all makes a great story for magazines and tabloids, but, sadly, the growing rate of self-harm in the elderly and young people in developing countries is seldom reported.

It is down to us all to stop hanging, flippant, labels on everything and to be open-minded and caring enough to lend a hang and give help, regardless of that person’s social status. EVERYONE HAS PROBLEMS! DON’T BE SCARED! HELP EACHOTHER!

WTF???

wtf my chemical romance arnt exactly the best band on earth the topics they are going on to have been done and in far more graphic detail (not mentioing names but "hurt" you get the band (y)
im not a emo but its kinda harsh to pin the blame on a certin culture .... even tho "emo" music isnt even emo... its more pop-punk than anything real emo is gooood not like the shitty new bands like PANIC! and My Chemical Romance (both bands have been bottled at reading, doesnt that say anything to you?????)

Mcr are hardly depressing are they, they might ocassionly have 'pained' lyrics but you cant sound depressing playing pop rock. unless they have backwards messaging.
when people kill themselves it's not about why but who can we blame and people are all to quickly to blame mcr because they wear black or whatever.
I doupt that if a band was very very depressing they would be a popular as mcr anyway.
wait am i defending mcr? shit the worlds gonna end!!

i think My Chemical Romance do have alot of suicide "helping" lyrics in most of their songs. i also find that Bright Eyes' Conor Orberst went through his own share of suicde and self harm, but his lyrics dont go and say "self harm is great", or "gee i wonder what the chance of killing myself if....." bands who sing about self harm and suicde know what their talking about, they went through it before. Maybe a ton of times before. Bright Eyes and My Chemical Romance are good bands, Bright Eyes are better tho. Noboy is to blame for the suicide .

something else..... blamed

anything that supposedly 'normal' people dont understand is to blame.
being an individual or cannabis does it matter to them? anything away from what is seen to be the norm, HAS to be the problem...
3 words i think sum it up quite nicely
The Spanish Inquisition
extreme? maybe, but why is being different seen as an issue? maybe this girl had issues and being an emotional goth was her way of dealing with it

What? Jesus Christ. None of us can say why this girl killed herself and maybe it was because she thought it was a cool thing to do, but this media thing is completely over the top.
"Emo fans wear dark clothes, practise self-harm and listen to "suicide cult" rock bands." I can't believe that was listed as 'fact' in a serious newspaper! This a case of massive over-stereotyping. Personally I'm a bit of a metalhead and dislike emo, but this is obviously the next target after people have decided heavy metal and punk are pretty harmless.
I must say, to borrow a comment from Metal: A Headbanger's Journey referring to Black Sabbath:
"I can see why a kid would be confused by a song called 'Suicide Solution', but you'd think if someone was serious enough about Ozzy Osbourne to kill themselves they'd actually take some time to think about the lyrics..."

I dont know why people feel they need to dress a certain way or act in certain ways to fit in. "Emo" is just another media steriotype that people lile to attatch to themselves. Again it looks like a failing british legal system looking for an answer for something they cant find one for and so look for the easiest way out. Its exactly the same as the whole marlyn manson thing where him and his music was blamed for people's death. Its like sayingbecause i watched teletubbies im more likely to bounce around and talk like a twat.

I dont think its fair that people automatically think that its because she was emo ... And blaming MCR.
Just because she liked that band doesnt mean it was because of them!!

Not all Emo's self harm ... And ...
Not all people who self harm are Emo!

Most people who class themsleves as Emo are the complete opposite to the stereotype.

And thats all Emo is ... A Stereotype!!

I dont like that fact that people are blaming Emo and MCR for this!!!!

And I dont know why people automatically assume that Emo means you must self harm...Etc.

I read the article link and I thought it was completely one-sided, ok, so this girl committed suicide but why are they blaming that on MCR and the emo culture and talking about emos like they are some sort of cult. To me its fashion and a social group. No offense but this girl could have been a chav and gone round kicking in peoples heads and killing them because they told them to move on. Just because we go bye the label emo dosent mean we're going to commit suicide

this actually really...um i guess it dissapoints me when people commit suicide...now i know the subject here is emo but look at it this way...emo, metal head, hardcore, goth...theyre all the same...hey if you like lets throw in chav too
MCR..mama we all go to hell
BFMV..torn apart at the seams of my dreams
Machine head...Aesthetics of hate
Marilyn Manson..i dont mind you keepin' me on pins and needles....
WTF?!...its all emo...look at it read over it if you like theres just no way in hell you can say that BFMV and machine head dont have a hint of emo in them...all machine head (no dis respect theyre one of my fav bands but) all of thyeere songs seem to be run on hatred and self past experiences...i mean here we can all say Rob Flynn is pretty emo too...nearly drinking himself to death, doing some shit with drugs...if thas not self herm too then the people who think that are far too narrow minded. on the subject of the little girl whopassed away (G.B.H.S) maybe she was just thinking that was the "rockstar thing" to do...i mean this may sound silly being a BFMV and Mschine head fan etc. but i thought it was cool to cut yourself when i was in yr 8!!! so the point im trying to make here is that its not the culture or anything like that to have caused her to commit suicide....there may have been some external reason behind it that will probably be lost with her forever...just like cobain...its better to burn out than to fade away..or some say his wife killed him...we will never know what happened to the little 13 yr old girl and hey maybe we shouldnt find out...but lets not blame the emo culture for it...coz emo metal hed goth..fuck it even chav....its all the same

*rock horns*
Peace out
and rock on

I am a 26 year old fan of MCR. I have to say first of all that yes some of the lyrics used in MCR songs involve death etc, but it's not meant to depress people, it is music designed to make people feel good. I listen to MCR and it lifts my spirits, the music is fantastic. Secondly MCR are not emo!!!! If you look up what the band themselves have said about 'emo' they hate it and never intended for their image to be taken in that way. They do not want to be thought of as 'emo' they are simply MCR and nothing more. Blaming the band for this girls tragic suicide is absolutely ludicrous. It is time that people stopped blaming everything on music and celebrity, and started to look deeper into peoples lives and their home/school situations. Obviously there was a lot more going through this girls head, either crap at home, or being bullied at school, I was bullied myself all the way through my school life and believe me it take you to the brink of suicide in extreme cases. For Gods sake this girl had only been listening to MCR for two weeks prior to her suicide, i'm sorry but immediately blaming the whole thing on MCR is short sighted and absolutely ludicrous. Wake up and smell the coffee! This girl obviously had some deep seeded issues, find out what was going on in her life!!!
