"Emo" fan suicide

Newspapers and sites around the world today are reporting about the recent suicide of 13 year old Hannah Bond.

Her tragic death is being blamed by mainstream media on the "emo culture" and in particular Hannah's love of My Chemical Romance.

See stories from THE TELEGRAPH, THE DAILY MAIL and THE LONDON LITE.

Kerrang! asks, why do you think that this genre is continually blamed for teenage suicide and self-harm?

Post your comments below and please remember to include a link to your MySpace profile so that, if we use your response in the magazine, we can print a picture of you.

Emo Culture

I think that people assume that, if someone is emo, they're automatically depressed and self harm. If people knew more about self harm, they'd know that it doesn't just affect "emos", and most bands that people call emo don't encourage self harm, they try and help people to be less depressed. They don't encourage depression. Why are people so narrow minded they don't see this?

Emo Suicide (sounds like a Death Metal song title...)

My Chemical Romance's lyrics often deal with a very realist, slightly angsty, outcast-centred point of view, and they're gonna get that association just like Placebo or Marilyn Manson would've done. When a fan of a band who appealed to them because they summed up their worldview and it wasn't a happy one is depressed, people will go "Well, shouldn't listen to that awful, miserable music then, that won't help. You're wallowing in your own misery."

I don't much like My Chemical Romance, but that's how it is with me and Bright Eyes.

Such a tragedy, and I truly feel for the parents, however, they should’ve acted when they became a wear she self-harmed, to just tell her “don’t do it again” is far from an adequate solution. Hannah may have cut herself due to the “Emo” fad or she may have had deeper issues, but either way it’s a call for help and her parents should have recognized that. One thing we need to realise is that people have always had emotional issues and mental health problems; self-harm has been happening for years and is by no means a “new craze,” it’s only glamorised in the “Emo” culture because the are normal young, look great and into a popular band, which all-in-all makes a great story for magazines and tabloids, but, sadly, the growing rate of self-harm in the elderly and young people in developing countries is seldom reported.

It is down to us all to stop hanging, flippant, labels on everything and to be open-minded and caring enough to lend a hang and give help, regardless of that person’s social status. EVERYONE HAS PROBLEMS! DON’T BE SCARED! HELP EACHOTHER!

wtf my chemical romance arnt exactly the best band on earth the topics they are going on to have been done and in far more graphic detail (not mentioing names but "hurt" you get the band (y)
im not a emo but its kinda harsh to pin the blame on a certin culture .... even tho "emo" music isnt even emo... its more pop-punk than anything real emo is gooood not like the shitty new bands like PANIC! and My Chemical Romance (both bands have been bottled at reading, doesnt that say anything to you?????)

Mcr are hardly depressing are they, they might ocassionly have 'pained' lyrics but you cant sound depressing playing pop rock. unless they have backwards messaging.
when people kill themselves it's not about why but who can we blame and people are all to quickly to blame mcr because they wear black or whatever.
I doupt that if a band was very very depressing they would be a popular as mcr anyway.
wait am i defending mcr? shit the worlds gonna end!!

i think My Chemical Romance do have alot of suicide "helping" lyrics in most of their songs. i also find that Bright Eyes' Conor Orberst went through his own share of suicde and self harm, but his lyrics dont go and say "self harm is great", or "gee i wonder what the chance of killing myself if....." bands who sing about self harm and suicde know what their talking about, they went through it before. Maybe a ton of times before. Bright Eyes and My Chemical Romance are good bands, Bright Eyes are better tho. Noboy is to blame for the suicide .

sod off, their music isn't that depressing. it cheers me up wen im down. its good music and you probably wouldn't know good music even if it slapped the hell out of your face!!! im sick of people thinking that Emos are self harmers. maybe it was just down to her having her own problems at home or other things to do with her. the full story isn't told, not really. only the fact that she was an Emo automatically puts it down to the music we listen to.

something else..... blamed

anything that supposedly 'normal' people dont understand is to blame.
being an individual or cannabis does it matter to them? anything away from what is seen to be the norm, HAS to be the problem...
3 words i think sum it up quite nicely
The Spanish Inquisition
extreme? maybe, but why is being different seen as an issue? maybe this girl had issues and being an emotional goth was her way of dealing with it

What? Jesus Christ. None of us can say why this girl killed herself and maybe it was because she thought it was a cool thing to do, but this media thing is completely over the top.
"Emo fans wear dark clothes, practise self-harm and listen to "suicide cult" rock bands." I can't believe that was listed as 'fact' in a serious newspaper! This a case of massive over-stereotyping. Personally I'm a bit of a metalhead and dislike emo, but this is obviously the next target after people have decided heavy metal and punk are pretty harmless.
I must say, to borrow a comment from Metal: A Headbanger's Journey referring to Black Sabbath:
"I can see why a kid would be confused by a song called 'Suicide Solution', but you'd think if someone was serious enough about Ozzy Osbourne to kill themselves they'd actually take some time to think about the lyrics..."

I dont know why people feel they need to dress a certain way or act in certain ways to fit in. "Emo" is just another media steriotype that people lile to attatch to themselves. Again it looks like a failing british legal system looking for an answer for something they cant find one for and so look for the easiest way out. Its exactly the same as the whole marlyn manson thing where him and his music was blamed for people's death. Its like sayingbecause i watched teletubbies im more likely to bounce around and talk like a twat.

I dont think its fair that people automatically think that its because she was emo ... And blaming MCR.
Just because she liked that band doesnt mean it was because of them!!

Not all Emo's self harm ... And ...
Not all people who self harm are Emo!

Most people who class themsleves as Emo are the complete opposite to the stereotype.

And thats all Emo is ... A Stereotype!!

I read the article link and I thought it was completely one-sided, ok, so this girl committed suicide but why are they blaming that on MCR and the emo culture and talking about emos like they are some sort of cult. To me its fashion and a social group. No offense but this girl could have been a chav and gone round kicking in peoples heads and killing them because they told them to move on. Just because we go bye the label emo dosent mean we're going to commit suicide

this actually really...um i guess it dissapoints me when people commit suicide...now i know the subject here is emo but look at it this way...emo, metal head, hardcore, goth...theyre all the same...hey if you like lets throw in chav too
MCR..mama we all go to hell
BFMV..torn apart at the seams of my dreams
Machine head...Aesthetics of hate
Marilyn Manson..i dont mind you keepin' me on pins and needles....
WTF?!...its all emo...look at it read over it if you like theres just no way in hell you can say that BFMV and machine head dont have a hint of emo in them...all machine head (no dis respect theyre one of my fav bands but) all of thyeere songs seem to be run on hatred and self past experiences...i mean here we can all say Rob Flynn is pretty emo too...nearly drinking himself to death, doing some shit with drugs...if thas not self herm too then the people who think that are far too narrow minded. on the subject of the little girl whopassed away (G.B.H.S) maybe she was just thinking that was the "rockstar thing" to do...i mean this may sound silly being a BFMV and Mschine head fan etc. but i thought it was cool to cut yourself when i was in yr 8!!! so the point im trying to make here is that its not the culture or anything like that to have caused her to commit suicide....there may have been some external reason behind it that will probably be lost with her forever...just like cobain...its better to burn out than to fade away..or some say his wife killed him...we will never know what happened to the little 13 yr old girl and hey maybe we shouldnt find out...but lets not blame the emo culture for it...coz emo metal hed goth..fuck it even chav....its all the same

*rock horns*
Peace out
and rock on

I am a 26 year old fan of MCR. I have to say first of all that yes some of the lyrics used in MCR songs involve death etc, but it's not meant to depress people, it is music designed to make people feel good. I listen to MCR and it lifts my spirits, the music is fantastic. Secondly MCR are not emo!!!! If you look up what the band themselves have said about 'emo' they hate it and never intended for their image to be taken in that way. They do not want to be thought of as 'emo' they are simply MCR and nothing more. Blaming the band for this girls tragic suicide is absolutely ludicrous. It is time that people stopped blaming everything on music and celebrity, and started to look deeper into peoples lives and their home/school situations. Obviously there was a lot more going through this girls head, either crap at home, or being bullied at school, I was bullied myself all the way through my school life and believe me it take you to the brink of suicide in extreme cases. For Gods sake this girl had only been listening to MCR for two weeks prior to her suicide, i'm sorry but immediately blaming the whole thing on MCR is short sighted and absolutely ludicrous. Wake up and smell the coffee! This girl obviously had some deep seeded issues, find out what was going on in her life!!!

Emo Culture/She misinterpreted the lyrics/Bad parenting to blame

you know what? I’m a My Chemical Romance fan.AND, I’m no emo.Yeah right. All MyChem fans don’t necessarily have to be emos. I used to be just plain fucking depressed and messed up, I DID think of committing suicide a times, but thankfully, I got to know of MyChem and that sweet day changed my fucking life forever. And then we have this silly case of this so-called “emo” teenager Hannah Bond, who’s committed suicide. And MyChem are blamed for it?? Well, if you read the news stories, she wasn’t allowed for a sleepover at her boyfriend’s house, so she went back to her house and told her parents:” I want to kill myself”. Her parents thought she was joking, and said: “Don’t be silly”. She later hanged herself from her bunk and her parents later found their daughter suspended an inch from the floor. She committed suicide because she couldn’t spend a night with her boyfriend. And they blame MyChem for it?? WHY?? Here’s a simple and frank answer: Because her parents are bad parents. You can’t blame your bad parenting on music. And by-the-fucking-way, MyChem isn’t even Emo. They’ve ALWAYS spoken about loving yourself, respecting your parents, and being a good human being inside rather than being a skinny girl(given the occurrence of young girls starving themselves to be skinny, and therefore,”hot”).And as reports say that she was a model student in her school, she had also shown her dad the cuts on her fucking wrist. And he didn’t do anything about it,cause he told her not to do it again, and she agreed. She told her dad “It’s a part of the Emo Initiation ceremony”. She told her mom “Emo is a fashion”. She tells the world on her Bebo page “I LOVE My Chemical Romance especially (lead singer) Gerard Way. Calls The Black Parade her hometown. Names herself: Living Disaster.Even though from what I’ve seen and heard of her parents and her life,it seems way better than what mine used to be,but SHE had decided she wanted to be the cool scene kid.
So let me clear all your motherfucking doubts: First, My Chemical Romance isn’t emo.Sure, they might have this dark Goth look-but that’s it. Lead singer Gerard Way and his brother,Mikey Way, the bassist, have battled depression before The Black Parade came out.Mikey Way has dealt with something very close to Bipolar Disorder. He almost left the band during the making of The Black Parade. Gerard Way has battled substance abuse, alcoholism and depression from the very beginning of the band {sorry}. How they have reformed themselves and how they have made their lives better should be and is an inspiration for their REAL fans. And then again, Hannah was trying to fit in with the “cool emo kid” thing. “It’s a part of the Emo Initiation ceremony. “Emo is a fashion”.”
What does that tell you?? And besides, she was something of a fangirl. For the uninitiated, a fangirl is usually a teenage girl who says she loves (mostly rock) bands just because they’re (the bands’)members are hot.Sure,MyChem might be hot, but that is just an added bonus.” I LOVE My Chemical Romance. Especially Gerard Way.” The words “ESPECIALLY GERARD WAY” stand out. Come the fuck on. And even if Gee really was your favorite, lemmme tell you, before killing yourself, you would have ATLEAST thought about (Gerard’s feelings cause it looks like you don’t care about Ray,Bob,Mikey and Frank)his feelings about a(so-called) MyChem fan KILLING herself, he is the one who has spoken out the most against violence, people killing themselves-et al. So there’s another demerit for Hannah. So if you had listened to Gerard (like you call yourself a fucking fan), you wouldn’t have killed your poor little self. And what about The Black Parade? Here’s your answer. The Black Parade IS NOT a fucking place where EMOS and only EMOS go after their death, like she thought. It has nothing to fans even going there after their deaths!
The Black Parade is My Chemical Romance’s third concept album, about a man dying from cancer. It’s got NOTHING to do with Emos.Yes,MyChem have a very strong passion for death and death-related themes for their albums, but they do not mean that the fans go out and kill themselves. If that was true,a large percentage of the population would be dead by now! They’ve ALWAYS spoken out against doing such senseless things.I bet that Hannah probably didn’t even listen to ‘Famous Last Words’ or watched the ‘Teenagers’ video, where at the end of the video,MyChem have put up a phone number and a website for people in distress/against violence.Honestly,If she is way too stupid to understand them and their music, she shouldn’t even be allowed to touch a MyChem album. To the parents:Why did you let her have a boyfriend at this age where she is supposed to be paying attention to studies?Don’t you know about the cases of teenage romances where the girl winds up being pregnant? And what about depression-there are so many teenagers who end up depressed after they break up with their respective boyfriends and girlfriends. If they don’t break up,they are obsessed with their respective boyfriends/girlfriends,and hate it to extreme extents when they are denied something with them. And this was one such case. She didn’t kill herself ‘cause Gerard Way told her to.Hannah Bond killed herself cause you didn’t allow her to a sleepover at her boyfriends’ house. If you never allowed her to have a boyfriend, she wouldn’t have asked for a sleepover and wouldn’t have killed herself for not being able to make out with that guy.NOT because of My Chemical *fucking awesome* Romance.Don’t get me wrong,I lOVE emos. They’re WAY,WAY better than chavs and preps.

I read this in the paper and thought it was a complete joke. her parents are obviously looking for someone or soemthing to blame because they didn't see that their daughter was depressed already. and please, seriously, she had listened to them for two weeks? the whole thing is fucking ridiculous. she was depressed. end off. people don't just kill themselves because of what songs say. the person that wrote this was way out of touch and had obviously not listened to music since s-club-7 went down the shitter.

I agreee with you Amy, and I think that for most people, its easier to go with the superficial than to have to think for themselves. Besides, from the parents' point of view, if its the band's fault, it can't be theirs. Given that kind of choice, which answer do you think they're going to go for?

Yeah, I totally i agree i mean that the media wouldn't care if a normal person committed suicide, they just stereotype emo's to much and i think its a bit harsh to pin it on mcr i'm not a fan infact i don't like the music but it's to much to blame a band for a death!

I am a Rock fan and musiscian, and I believe that the Emo "subculture" is against all sense, besides, most of them are just posing because they wouldn't be depressed just by stop acting like they do. Besides, you cannot blame any kind of music or lyrics for actions taken by people, if you do whatever a song tells you no matter how bad it is, you are really a stupid phuck...

This is CRAZY.

I can not believe that people would blame the bands that the girl was listening to for her suicide. She obviously wasn't right in the head and needed medical attention regardless of the music she listens to.
"Emo" bands don't encourage depression or self harm, they're just brave enough to speak out on it and show everyone that the world isn't always peachy and perfect.
And with my experience, the music has SAVED me from suicide and self harm. It's been my REFUGE from all the bullcrap that goes on in the world.
Whoever decided to blame MCR just needed a place to lay blame, and found the easiest way out. If anything her parents are to blame for not helping her when she needed help the most. Or maybe they were just blind to the fact that she was suicidal.
Either way, "emo" music does NOT promote suicide. And whoever takes it that way REALLY needs medical attention.
The end.

oh god, it's so horrible to hear of teenage suicide!!! poor girl...why did't anybody notice she was such a mess?? about these article and all the charges against mcr..,I don't think they can say that the band is responsible of her death. ok, their songs are not about happy life and stuff like that, but don't they repeate over and over "don't be suicidal"? mcr are the reason why I'm not self harm and depressed myself. so, stop being so stupid and blaming them, because these guys are the most positive and caring about life people I've ever knew!

p.s.-sorry for my awful grammar! :P

I want to say that I have suffered depression for 7 years and have self harmed in the past. I aint no emo. I love metal as well as any other rock music specially MCR. In fact MCR are the only band that have helped me get through my depression. However when someone is in a state where they want to kill themselves i feel it is definitely more deeper than what kind of music they like or how they dress. That girl needed help. As in the bull shit article says, she told her "so-called" friends about her suicide thoughts they should of fucking told someone. Thats the thing its not taken seriously. Her parents are also to blame because they should of seen the signs and listened to her but people just brush it of and tell them to deal with it. Thats bullshit. Thats what makes a ill person like hannah feel more isolated. I wish people wouldn't pin this on MCR and some made up sub genre just because they have no one else to point the finger at (all this emo shit suddenly started by daily mail). MCR have said many times in their shows that their purpose as a band was to help people get through issues such as depression and self harm and to get help. They haven't stressed enough about it. having dealt with depression themselves specially gerard way who has recovered from it. what a better role model than he. All this bull shit Is so degrading to those many people who suffer depression and need help who are from all walks of life not what their musical tastes are. or their haircut

people who self-harm are not always emo's self-harming is just a way of relief of stress . i am an emo and do self-harm but i would not say that if you are an emo you do not have to self harm to be one.

i agree with Amy Havok person.

No one knows the real reason Hannah did this. The media just exploded with all these random ideas about her death and assume that she killed herself because of MCR.

You can go on youtube and find videos of Hannahs best friend defending her and telling the truth.

The media makes up a bunch of crap and they are making Hannah look like a little whiny teenager, which im sure she wasnt. Im sure she had her reasons to do what she did.

Its unfortunate and tragic. I feel so horrible for her friends and family.

The media blames "emo" music. Emo is just a label. It means nothing.

they should blame the parents for the suicide.

Anyone who lets their child commit suicide clearly isnt a good parent, they should be sent to jail for manslaughter

hannah bond..

its really sad to hear about that poor girl, but why are the media trying to blame someone for it?

what do the media know about what the poor lass had been through ?

for all anyone knows, she could have been through hell, and the only outlet she had was the music she listened to.

I know personally when i had a hard time with depression bands like H.I.M and My chemical romance helped me to not feel so alone.

My heart goes out to hannahs family, but dont be looking for a reason that pushed her overboard, its not fair to anyone.

"Emo" fan suicide

"Emo" is being blamed for this sort of thing because it's what humans do. Blame something they know nothing about. The term "Emo" has a much deeper meaning than the one people attach to it these days. Emo seems to be an image one minute, then a style of music the next. But wait? Aren't PATD emo? yes? well how come MCR are emo too? Sub-genres, there are none of them, people are summing categories up, and blaming the one thing they know nothing about. I defy anyone to listen to Rites Of Spring, Gray Matter, or even go a little later with The Get Up Kids, then turn around and say Emo is still causing suicides. No chance.

Stupid stereotypes. She only self harmed because that's what she thought emo was all about, fucking stupid child. Whats wrong with just listening to the music you like without having to dress a certain way or doing certain things? Emo is bullshit.

what the hell is that all about "after she became an emo" you dont just become an emo its just a lable thats kids have made up and all emo is about is wearing tight jeans bright coloured tops and chav shoes music is nothing so she listened to mcr who doesnt these days mcr didnt tell her to hang her self from the bed if shes cutting her self thats her own fault i meen come on do you see any of the mcr boys with cuts down their arms no so why blame music when some little girl finds its "cool" to like death.

i do feel sorry for her parents but its not because of music she hung herself

It's pretty easy to see why it's blamed when:

so many people of that cult are doing it. The whole concept of emo is usually dwelling in negative emotions. The link between negative emotion and suicide is not a wild jump of the imagination.

its so wrong to call mcr a death cult kerrang and everyone else knows that mcr try and help people with problems! cause the band themselfs have gone thru suicide and drink and booze problems so they try and help people thru their music! gerard way has always said emo is a pile of shit and theres no point pissing away your life on suicide cause its fucking bullshit! i cant belive reports can get away with saying that about mcr when we have such bad role models as amy winehouse! and the daily mail got the lyrics wrong to the song welcome to the black parade so the reporter didnt do much reasearch about the song!

'Emo' suicide

The reason Emo is blamed for everything is because people are always looking for something/some one to blame... music has been blamed for years... everything from rock to metal to rap... its just a easy thing to blame, it reaches a wide range of people so therefore if some one happens to do somthing.. it must be due to the music they listen too because some one else who did a simmilar thing was listening to the same music... how uncommon. Its just little minded people looking for things to blame. And to be honest this whole emo thing means nothing any more.. its been around for years. And now its popular its basically just a nother trend. Sooner or later people will be blaming somthing else. I wonder what will be to blame next. But for now. I personally think people should grow up and blame themselves for the things they do. Not some one who is completly un related, and just happens to make music that envokes feelings. Makes me angry that people are so small minded.

grow up kids? are you kidding? this girl's dead- she for one, won't be growing up, and your views help no-one. fair enough, have an opinion if you need to, but saying that you feel no sympathy for someone who was clearly experiencing problems -and you, and no doubt anyone else REALLY knows what they were, and never will.
And the fact that you're hiding behind internet anonomity just means you can say whatever you want without you being the one to suffer the consequences...

just because someone listens to them doesnt mean that they are 'emo'.
it also doesnt mean that mcr are responsible for the deaths that may happen to their fans.
they are totally against all these things, and it has always been that way!
people are so pathetic and annoy me when they throw bullshit like this into the air!

Why

Why are the media and general public so ignorant? I listen to the music I do because I love it, it makes me happy and I feel a connection with it. The term 'emo' is always misused in cases like this, hannah must have been deeply unhappy, and I wouldn't believe anyone that says they've never thought about suicide in some context. The sad thing is she obviously didnt feel she could turn to her parents for help.

What the fuck happened to the world?

With all due respect to the family of the deceased young girl and my sincere condolences, but hang the fuck on! Kids harming and killing themselves simply to belong and be cool, surely this isn't what its come to these days is it? I mean if you listen to music about being miserable then maybe you may be more prone to self harm because physical pain helps block out the emotional pain etc, but self harm and suicide just in the name of attention seeking, scenes and fashion?!!?? WHAT THE FUCK is wrong with kids today? I remember a time when fashion and coolness played second fiddle to the most important thing - THE MUSIC! That was my outlet, that was the way of belonging, by relating to friends through music. I feel so sorry for that young girl, at that age where you start to socialise and come into yourself, in this social networking age we now live in, there now seems more pressure than ever to 'find your place' and to fit in or be cool or whatever. Funny that MCR which mainly has a punk sound anyway stemmed from an ideal that encouraged individiulivism, yet nearly everyone who listens to them dress and act the same as their peers. So Sad what has happened because of this bullshit.

Ok this whole 'Emo' thing is getting beyond a joke

How can you blame suicides on a sort of music? As someone said P!ATD are emo as are MCR, but how super happy are P!ATD? I wouldn't exactly say there are promoting self harm

I'm into a lot of these so called 'emo' bands but look at me, I have never thought about harming myself and never will!
And dont pin me under a genre, I like pretty much every form of Rock related music all the way to metal to even some Indie stuff

Anyways back to the point, its sad to hear of Hannah's death, but the press need to get a real grip and realise maybe she issues with her family or was bullied at school, so many different scenarios as to why she did it, how can you be so naive and blame bands that dont actually encourage people to hurt themselves
Emo is a mere fashion style these days

Emo suicide

It's sad how a girl can chose to take her life. No type of fashion is to blame. There must be something more to it than that, but, of course, the media wanting the attention and headlines, will spit out whatever they see fit. Music is expression, the same with fashion. How someone choses to portray themselves is their own choice and can't be linked to someone's resons for taking their own life. There's more to it but the media refure to admit it.
"Emo fans wear dark clothes, practise self-harm and listen to "suicide cult" rock bands."
Only the Daily Mail would ever say such a thing like this. They know nothing, they haven't met the people who do like to call themselves "emo". It's just another thing they want to rant about, just like they have with other type of people. Goths, chavs, plastics. It's pathetic.

My sympathy lies with the girl and her family and friends.

"Emo" fan suicide.

There is absolutely noone to blame for this tragedy.

The parents are not at fault, the girl clearly showed no signs of anything upsetting her. I'm sure had she been behaving differently her parents would have picked up on it.

Music is not at fault. Although I strongly dislike some types of music, I do not blame any of it. Lyrics are the story of someone else being hurt or a story of difficulties experienced by the songwriter. They are not instructions.

There was clearly something deeper that hit her. Perhaps bullying, perhaps rejection. Something like that.

Something everyone seems to forget when they are discussing the tragedy of teen suicides, is that they are teenagers.
Teenagers are known for being so awful because of their hormones.
These hormones make teenagers feel things stronger than most people would. It's why at say, 15, a girl can be absolutely heartbroken over a month-long relationship.

I think this is simply a message to keep an eye on our teenagers, and make sure they are coping with day-to-day life.

fucking idiot.
i can't believe the mainstream media will now be finding a scapegoat in alternative music, just because this girl had no idea how to act.

i hate it when kids are looking for a new image to rebel a bit, and find 'emo'. emo is a genre of music and nothing more. slashing your wrists for the sake of it, and posting angsty rants on your bloody bebo page is not emo.

bands can't be blamed for the actions of her... if anything, the parents should be blamed for spawning such a socially inept idiot.

i have no sympathy for this case, it was just a girl who tried too hard.

ridiculous.

How could people be so ignorant?
Suicide has nothing to do with the music you listen to, your style of clothing or anything like that. Its a much deeper emotional and mental reason. People should ask why she felt she needed to do this, not go on a witch hunt for things they dont understand and have no right to judge!
Plus i am a MASSIVE my chem fan they always send a positive message, they believe in people getting help, not commiting suicide!! Maybe people should research things before they make unjust and unfair alegations!

It's not the music, it's you.

I hope you all realise that it's not the music that's to blame here, it's YOU LOT. All of you self proclaimed emos who go for this image- all she wanted to do was belong in this culture, and because she was very young, she very easily took it a step too far. It's not the music, it's the culture that spawned from the music that's to blame.

that is such bull, as if music and culture cud drive someone to take thier life, the truth is more than likly Hannah was having a realy hard time at school or at home an she used music like mcr, as a form of release for her pain, u cant blame murder or suicide on the media, people make there own choices, an ok the emo style may not be exactly glass half full, sun shine an lolly pops, but she must of been survierly depressed or confussed, she proberly thaught suicide was her only opption.....
:(, i feel deep sympathy for her and her parrents(ive been there myself but i realized theres more to life b4 it was to late) they shuld look into her school life, friends, family, rather than jus goin to the music collection an sayin, 'theres ur answer'

this world can be so fucked up at times.

well thats wot i have 2 say,

This is so fucking wrong. If these people actually LISTENED to the lyrics of some of these songs, they'd see it's the complete opposite. My Chemical Romance especially. Their inspiring music has saved countless lives. Why don't you ever see THAT in newspapers? The stereotypical "emo kids" that are into that scene that do self-harm and commit suicide, listen to that music because it helps them out more than these news reporters bother to dig. These bands should be getting so much more praise for the things they do, rather than just being blamed when something bad, they don't even encourage happens. WISE THE FUCK UP!

Emo cult!?

its sad to hear a child has take their on life but its pathetic how the press rip it apart and blame it on the way the look and what they listen to. Emo is over rated and why does everyone feel they have to agure about it?!
suicide isnt a trend, and emo isnt a cult
its a style of music of which people deside they want to listen to, why try and change someones opinion? live your life and let other live theirs.

sympathy with the girls friends and family
and the press need to back the fuck down
they make things worse then they are
you cant say a style of music is a cult or to blame.

emo suicide culture

quite frankly what her family and the press are failing to realise is that they had probably lost their daughter through ignorance long before she took her life. They are then placing the blame on 'emo' because it is something they do not understand. The lyrics, passion and emotion in songs are often what keeps people holding on in life. Sometimes one song can change our lives entirely.

blaming some 'suicide cult' culture is an unneccisery way of placing the blame elsewhere. I'm guessing she felt a stronger connection with her music than her parents, and not in the way they seem to be presuming.

Missing the point

Being EMO has nothing to do with it, somehow a teenager has influenced there parents mind in order to right that in a national newspaper. How un-professional.

It is obvious to me that as a developed society and culture that we are too far up our on arse to say okay, so there is something wrong here. There are loads of things that we can do to prevent this sort of events occuring. Such as;
Weekly counciling at schools,
or Teachers noting and addressing parents with strange behaviour.

You do not have to wait till fucking parents day to say anything why not just call home? you fucking call when we are not at school. Why not call home when we are not functioning adeqautely.

Rather than wasting paper and time with "Its cause she is emo", why not stick pen to paper, head to head, authority to authority and invent a way to prevent it happening again.

the fucking media just like to have something to blame, and it seems that they blame 'emo' suicides on my chemical romance EVERY FUCKING TIME!!

it is really ashamed that this poor girl's death is being focused on her love of music (and a band that significantly discourages self-harm) instead of the real issues- what she was going through that made her think that suicide was the only escape.

emo culture

The poor girl was obviously a nutcase, this is a prime example of the select few who bring a bad name to the rest of the culture. I used to love my chemical romance but im still alive, i knew every word to every song and ive never ever tried to kill myself or anything. It was actually a nice thing to get away and listen to these bands when you are feeling low as they make you feel that your not alone if your feeling depressed. its obviously a ploy to get everyone against things that arent 'normal' or 'safe'. Parents should stop trying to look everywhere else for an answer to a problem just because they feel guilty that they didnt look after their kid properly.

Emo

Ignorance. Ignorance is the basis of every article that says "Emo culture" made a girl take her own life, ignorance is why people scapegoat bands, ignorance is why people throw blame and prejudice at things like this, rather than supporting and helping those with suicidal thoughts or depression.

Some people don't seem to understand that bands don't come up to someones house and hold a gun to their head to make them commit suicide. This girl made a choice - it was hers and hers alone. If someone encouraged her, then they need help too.

This society is meant to be advanced, meant to be understanding and accepting of all people and all ideologies and trhoughts. But obviously when it comes to something this sensitive, people just pull the same old bullshit time and time again.

Its time to start shedding light on self harm and suicide. Its time that society realises that you don't have to be a 13 year old, easily influenced teenager to suffer from self harm or suicidal thoughts. And its time that society started to help instead of turning a blind eye.

bull fucking shit.

Watevs. That is shit. I cannot believe that they would try and blame her suicide on My Chem.
They make it sound as if it's MCR's fault. She commit suicide because she obviously wasn't happy with her life. Not because it's a fashion. HONESTLY. What person in their right mind would commit suicide because it's a fashion. "Ooooh! I think i'm gonna commit suicide today cause that will make me look oh so rad." Seriously? Do people honestly think she thought that? Yeah, because she's gonna look oh so cool when she's dead. Sure, she'd get the attention. But what good would it do her. She wouldn't notice. She's dead. You daft fucking cunts. It's so sad that she commit suicide but it's even sadder that they're blaming the 'emo' fashion and MCR. Did anyone ever think about her life? Maybe she was fucking miserable. Did anyone take note of that? Music is an escape. It's not sending out subliminal messages to kill yourself. It is so low that they can blame a brilliant band for this girls death. Pathetic.

Hmmm

i'm not into all this emo nonsense but i don't think it's fair to blame a band for someone commiting suicide
Fair enough mcr were her favourite band but come on she could have been going through a load of shit and decided enough was enough.
My heart does go out to her family and friends
But 13? she shouldn't have been going through any sort of shit at that age especially enough to go and kill herself

xx

stupid

Call me insensitive but Hannah Bond was a stupid little girl.

How fucking selfish did she want to come across as?

I've been a My Chemical Romance fan for nearly six years now and I wouldn't be here without them.
I know they're going to get blamed for this all because of one selfish little girl's stupidity.

I hope she's fucking happy.

Okay then.

I'm fed up with the media obsession that "emo" music promotes suicidal tendancies. For an apparently "suicide cult" as they describe it, it contains a bunch of people (at least within my social circle) that are perfectly happy and content with life.

So what makes the media (and in fact the deluded parents, although my thoughts are with them) think that bands such as My Chemical Romance are to blame?

Because they tackle the themes of death and loss in their songs? Is that a trait only found in "emo" songs? I don't believe that is the case, and I'm sure any sane person will agree with me.

I, personally, listen to My Chemical Romance. They are not my favourite band, but their music is catchy, and the band have talent - so does my brother, girlfriend, and half of my friends... yet we haven't killed ourselves, or even had the intention to.

At the end of the day, the parents and the media just want someone or something to blame, because they are still in shock that this girl would kill herself. I can partly understand this. But what I don't understand is how exactly listening to a rock band caused this girl to kill herself.

Yes, it is sad, and yes, I give my condolences, but at the end of the day - she made her own choice, and nobody else can be blamed for that.

"Emo" suicide

I think blaming the music she listens to is ridiculous. MCR are a band who want to save kids lives, not destroy them and anyone who's a fan of them would know that.
I personally feel that there is something more to her commiting suicide than the way she dresses and the music she listens too. It's stupid to think "she must've killed herself coz shes "Emo"." Their must have been a better reason for her killing herself than this.

My heart goes out to the girls friends and family xxx

What the hell?? I cant believe it... This is so stupid! Emo has never been about self-harming and so on! I really dont know why do people think so! I love emo music but this is so stupid...
How can MCR kill anyone with their music?! I love them. This is stupid... That girl was too... And I think her parents should do something...

"emo"

Papers like the Daily Mail have tried to blame MCR for being at the head of some sort of dangerous cult before. They get it because they are the biggest.

A lot of these right wing papers often slag off the latest rock bands with lazy journalism to please their middle aged conservative readers. They really don't know what the music is about.
