Metallica to follow NIN?

Metallica's motor-mouth drummer Lars Ulrich has hinted that the Bay Area thrashers may make the forthcoming, as-yet-untitled follow-up to 2003's St. Anger available online a la Nine Inch Nail's recent Ghosts... effort.

"We're looking at how we can embrace everything," Ulrich told Rolling Stone. "We want to be as free players as possible. We've been observing Radiohead and Trent Reznor and in 27 years or however long it takes for the next record, we'll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the internet."

To be honest, I don't care where it appears first as long as I can get hold of it.

Well no wander they want to do it this way, NIN earned just over a million dollars was it for just instrumental tracks.

And after all the hate they displayed with sharing music they obviously don't think it's about getting it to everyone for cheap!

As long as you pay Lars vast sums of money he'll be happy in what ever format it is. Share it and he'll sue your ass!

Hmm

If he just wants people to hear the music, then why did metallica care so much about being flung into poverty by people using Napster in the 90's?

They are probably my favourite band, but I gotta admit this seems a little strange. I, for one would rather it was released on CD as I just want to own it rather than have the songs on my computer

What, you can afford a computer and a tenner or however much a month for internet access, but yeah, i agree. Paying a tenner does sound a little steep, i mean how could you afford to spend £10 on a CD when you've spent several hundred pounds on a computer?

I download too. I just dont try and use shit justification. I'm a bad person :P not just trying to claim im too poor.

Hmmm

The material is more going back to the old days and also some of it is being shared online?

Sounds like lessons have been learned from the St Anger/Napster era. I;m all for it.

No one gets it

i praise Ulrich for what he did with napster. If napster was still around today then it would be impossible for new bands to ever get anywhere, they'd realease a record, it would all be free, they'd make no money and couldn't go on tour without spending their own cash to finance cos the record company would simply not give them any. I know people think he was money grabbing but it was a bold thing to do, as the biggest band on the planet, his voice was heard. If joe public from The Emo's or whoever did it then people would be like, shut up, if ure in it for the money then we aint interested you sell out. Metallica make more money from their back catalogue alone to not have to worry bout never making it, or fan backlashes, thier credibility as being metal will always be there, he knew that th risk of a backlash was there, but also knew that metallica rock that fuckin hard that millions would still turn up at their shows ad buy their records and even if they didn't, he could go, sit in his big house get 300 women to come round and stroke his face and swim in pools of money. Nowadays startup bands can make money from people downloading their stuff, rather than it being downloaded for free. Imagine, since 2003, how many bands would have made it without being able to sell on the internet? We all know what a platform infamy is, thats why bono gets away with it, everyone hates him... but he does it anyway cos he can and his voice is heard... the bigger the platform, the louder the voice!

.....

Who said they were going to copy Raidiohead???

In a matter of fact what Lars is talking about is MissionMetallica.com it goes live this month and nobody really knows what they are going to do with it...

And Napster wasnt about money it was about CONTROL OF THEIR MUSIC, they prob spent more on the legal bills than the money they would have lost from the illegal downloads

Did Lars recompense all of the bands that he ripped off by illegally bootlegging in his tape trading days?

Bands have to evolve, if you look around many others are doing the same. Bands are releasing exclusive online records, etc. Metallica realise this, which is why they did the record shop signing at Rasputin on the Record Day. These things happen... Im just annoyed they havn't even announced a Stadium in England, what a load of crap!

So yeah, go ahead Metallica! Do whatever the hell you want :P

Metallica's new album

Well i downloaded the demo version of the album to hear what it would be like........Pretty damn good IMHO. When the album is released, I shall go and buy it as I'm a "I'd rather own the real thing than have the digital download" kind of person. HEAVY!

metallica going www

To be honest with you, I couldn´t care less. Metallica died for me when I received my warning email from them in the good old Napster days asking me to fill out a form that said that I would swear never ever to up- or download a Metallica song ever again. The thing is I only had one tiny Metallica song on my harddrive at that time. And it happend to be in my "shared folder". Too bad. Ever since Metallica has started playing big buddies with the RIAA and since they started sueing their own fans I have stopped listening/buying/downloading/caring about Metallica whatsoever. Metallica is dead and it´s their own fault...
