Gerard Way hits out at Mexican emo violence

My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way made an impassioned plea from the stage at the Zero Festival in Mexico City, Mexico last Saturday (April 12) to curb the recent spate of attacks on 'emos' in the country.

Last month a mob of angry teenagers attacked three 'emos' in Mexico City, setting off a wave of anti-emo and homophobic violence that spread from the capital to the border towns of Tijuana and Juarez.

Addressing the mainly teenage crowd, Way pleaded for unity among the assembled throng.

"We've heard on the news that there have been some violent attacks in the country against people labelled as 'emo'," began Way. "We are here for a rock show. We don't want to see any violence here tonight, against emo people or anyone else."

They could have at least got someone influential to the people "emo-bashing" like i dunno Rob Flynn for example..
Getting Gerard Way as a spokesperson to stop Emo violence if anything is gonna make these people want to do it more! he's the sole reason this whole fad came about!!

You know, if you knew anything about MCR, you'd know they did that for a long time. MCR are actually one of those real bands that made their fanbase by touring nonstop with little money to their name and with twelve people at their shows, and didn't even sign on to a major label until they had been doing that for a long time. Get your facts straight before you start bashing, please.

It's great he tried to appeal to those ignorant morons who attack emos, but I'm gonna have to say that it probably won't have any effect. MCR aren't really emo, but those attackers consider them emo so it won't make a difference...

but even at that i have many friends who hate rock.. they dont care
but at school i here people saying stuff as i walk past like "dirty grunger" and shit like that

i don't think Gerard made that comment because his record sales were down are anything its probably just that he doesn't believe that violence is the answer and when you hear something like a aload of teenagers attacked 3 emos you kind of think well thats unfair. yea if you have a problem with emos yea you have the freedom to express that feeling but there is no need to upset other people that call themselves emos because its their life let them live it the way they want to!! i love MCR and alot of the things they say are true and have meaning

y r mcr so awesome its almost unfair on all other bands

i count myself as a metalhead, i dress in black band named hoodies and t-shirts and jeans. but my two favourite bands are metallica and my chemical romance. i am totally on the side of these emos though (obviously) they do not deserve allthe sick they get and sometimes i really do fear metalheads will someday be as resented by the rock music comunity as much as chavs.
god bless gerard for standing up for everyone who feel they cant make a diference. and my heart goes out to those in mexico who have been assaulted on the basis of purely being themselves.

I love the way that everyone thinks it started with JEW and MCR. It was around over a decade before with bands like Rites of Spring and Grey Matter. Even Sunny Day Real Estate and Fugazi were before this gash that everyone thinks emo is these days. Take a listen to what the original emo was and then you'll relise what a stupid fad this current shit is.

On the subject of MCR getting abuse for not saying anything, no one here would give a shit if he hadn't spoken out. Just because Holier than Thou Gerard has said something, you're all jumping on the band wagon. Grow up and develope your own beliefs rather than being brain washed.

We are all different and if we were all made the same then wouldn't life be boring. Culture categorizes people into stereotypes but at the end of the day humans are simply humans, not emo, posh and etc. So people's inhumanity towards each other is utterly disgraceful . At least someone cares enough to actually talk about what's going on. I think because My Chemical Romance can relate to the whole 'emo' bashing thing, although they know that they aren't classified as that label.

Gerard really does think about others, more then other singers I believe. He takes time to care about others, and his music helps them too.

Just because Gerard Way said he doesn't like emo culture doesn't mean he won't defend emos when people are getting killed in riots. It's called empathy, people have been doing it since the Pleistocene Era, and it's not in the least bit hypocritical.

I found out about this about a month ago, it was on Youtube and in my local newspaper before Gerard even said anything.

Also, for all the crap Way has been getting since day one about being wimpy I'm starting to wonder where everyone else is? All those other rockstars who seem to always jump onto the "worthy cause" bandwagon for publicity. Especially the metal ones. Unlike some of their fans, they're grown ups with brains. They should be able to put two and two together and realize that some of those throwing bottles at innocent people are listening to their bands and are a lot more likely to take them seriously than Gerard Way.

I prefer metal music to emo but now, I'd rather be called an emo than be associated with any one of those dicks.

Whoever compared them to chavs was spot on.

You do make a point. As someone who may be considered a slightly older metalhead, we had none of these problems years ago. We didn;t get into trouble, nobody bothered dare mess with us. I think, to be honest, the image and the notoriety of metal had a hand in dissuading the scum elements of society from picking fights. We didn't go out to cause trouble, and nobody went out and gave us trouble.

Then along came the grunge, nu-metal and emo. All these "sensitive" bands, who spent their time crying about this that and the other, and how hurt their feelings were. And of course their fans all hopped on the "nobody likes me, waaaaah, I'm so sad, I want pity" bandwagon.

End result, you've got an entire generation of pussies who have made themselves a visible target.
I have no sympathy - you wanna look weak, you want to act weak, don't be surprised when people try to take advantage of it.

I don't condone the violence, but I'm not surprised it happened. And it will happen again. As long as there is that general feeling that emos and goths are nothing but a bunch of whiny little bitches, it will happen again.

I am a fan of metal but I completely hate the fucked up opinions that some metalheads hold which are completely dictatorial.

Sure, some kind nowadays are only dressing/listening to a certain type of music for a fashion statement and it is pretty annoying BUT it's not like that in the majority of cases. There is NO need for violence because sooner or later the poser kids are going to grow up anyway.

I agree with all those who think Gerard was brave enough to stand up to all the shitheads out in Mexico. It may not have an effect but at least someone is trying to get some sense into their thick heads. It's not about what anyone looks like, it's about the music that we listen to. I don't see a point in people dissing and calling other people names, it doesn't get you anywhere at all. It's not about 'world domination' or anything like that. We are all people that are equal and have a right to listen to the music that we listen to and dress how we want to. Personally I think that My Chemical Romance are an 'emo' band but it's not about the 'emo' it's about the music. If you think it's shit don't buy it, if you think it's good buy it. It's that simple.
And as for the tragic events of Sophie Lancaster's killing... well... people need to get over themselves and see everyone as equals. Someone once said 'don't judge a book by it's cover!'

I really don't like labels, the fights are the main reason.

It shouldn't matter how you dress and what music you listen to.

Some of the nicest people I know are considered to be 'emo', but then again I know some really nice people that are known as 'chavs', what you are has no effect on your personality. So theres no point in fighting.

Chavs are hard to explain,
their basically people that (normally) live in rough areas, and wear brands like 'Nike Air' and 'Fred Perry', are known to hang around in gangs on
streets and stuff. Drinking and random violence... That type of stuff.

Or at least thats what their known for when most of them are alright people...

I'm not sure if there are any chavs outside the UK?
I think it's just a trend over here?

I'm ok with you not liking MCR anymore (although we'll see if your mind changes with their next album) but I wanted to comment on the idea that emos do self-harm. Maybe your friends may, but not all emos do!

The way I see it, emo /is/ both a style and genre of music, and a characteristic label. But it's not this stereotypical label everybody tries to impose on people who look 'emo' - not everybody cuts themselves and cries at every single obstacle! I have lots of emo friends and I myself would probably be called emo too, based on my appearance, but we have more fun than dark times together. We don't cry black mascara tearsss all the time. The reason we are 'emo' is that we're very emotional people who have got a lot of shit for being different. We're all in our early twenties, so we've also had a few years to feel insecure in the world. I would imagine most real 'emos' have similar experiences. Scene emos who just think it's cool to cut and whine - them I dislike just as much as anybody else does, but I don't want to start beating them up or anything!

Also, the only friends I have who cut themselves are actually goths. Believe it or not.

This is where the concept of moderation comes in handy.

Anyone who goes around in conspicous clothing such as "skinnies" or heavy chains and huge spiked boots, for that matter, is only asking for trouble.

In today's world, trying to be non-conformist is pointless-conformity taking the shape of chavs/D4s(for fellow irishmen) and non-conformity taking the shape of emos and metalheads. You are associated with one or the other, regardless of your wishes.

The main principle of "emo" is to stand outr from the crowd, to mark yourself as different, oui?
Well that's impossible st this stage. By conforming to labels of any sort, you instantly lose that entire concept.
So why bother?
Your physical experience need not alert others to your music preferences, so just wear normal clothes.
Or not, you know. I mean, I'll live.

err..... don't know whether i should mention this but technically, mcr are NOT "emo", they are alternative rock.

"emo" bands are bands like jimmy eat world (who happen to be a great band) but thats besides the point.
