Gerard speaks!

My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has responded to accusations of plagiarism by former employer Hart Fisher of independent comicbook publishers Boneyard Press.

Responding to a post from Fisher's online blog, Way told MTV news:

"I sent [Hart] an email years ago, before we finished [Three Cheers For Sweet] Revenge, thanking him for believing in me, and never got a response. I'm not ashamed of what I did for him, and wanted to see him in person and thank him. I've never had the chance."

like helena with the death of his grandmother... who else would dare to do that! he finds things that mean the most to him so thats why they could seem emotional but the band as a whole are not emo... thats impossible!

All feelings towards the band aside, if Gerard stole the lyrics he deserves to be punished for it, despite weither or not he makes good music from it. It's still stealing, it doesn't excuse him.
As for people saying "He is soo sxc/hott" whatever, just because you find him attractive that doesn't mean that he should be let off the hook either.

tbh i wouldn't be surprised if he did nick the stuff. i'm a fan of mcr, not a hardocre one and tbh they are NOT that good and if they're your fave band u don't have a wide veriety in music taste. having said that, three cheers is a fucking sick album and 1 they will never top. mcr are a band who has truely sold out because they let their producers and record labels run them, thats the definition of selling out. they release singles that are not their choice but the 1's that are slow and nice and that will sell and make the mainstream happy. when u see random 40 year olds in shopping centres singing along to teenages u no wt i mean.

Alright, admittedly I dont like MCR, however, they are really talented, I give credit to them. They changed alot of peoples minds on how they think of music. As for copywriting lyrics, its not something an artist would do on purpose. They wouldn't do it on purpose for the simple fact they have so many fans out there, and they wouldnt want to let them down, like any other band. Again, I dont really like MCR, though they are honestly doing music for their fans.

I think the majority of you have missed the underlying message of the article. Perhaps you should go back and read what Gerard said and analyze it. His answer to the question slightly concerns me. I can understand that it is part of an interview and his answers may not be that relevant, but he diplomatically side-stepped the question. This avoidance does cast some suspicion on his actions. I can also understand that it must be difficult to counteract an accusation of plagiarism.

I have also noticed that many of you are justifying the band's ppotential plagiarism based on their musical abilities. This is also another reason for concern. Plagiarism is an academic offense and can have serious ramifications. If you are a university student who is caught plagiarizing, you can be expelled and/or have monetary penalties. Those violations can be attatched to transcripts and, really, what respectable university would accept a student with academic violations?!

Some people have asked why Fisher has waited so long to act. There are many motives, the most obvious being that he just wants attention. If the lyrics for Three Cheers were stolen, he could have brushed it away, but if the ideas for a second album and a comic book were unjustly taken, then that could cause a person to take action. It boils down to how much Fisher was willing to overlook.

Plagiarism in the fine arts can be a little tricky to track because so much of it is based on experiences. Artists have always been influenced by each other. A great example is Indigo Jones (1573-1652)*. Jones studied Andrea Palladio's written works and buildings before he designed some of the buildings in London. The Banquetting House in London has been clearly influenced by Palladio. There is also a connection between a church by Palladio in Italy and some of the buildings in southeast Asia, but that does not mean either of the artists have stolen the other's ideas. Jacopo Tintoretto (1519-94)* kind of copied himself by creating wax figures and drawing them at different angles for different paintings. The connections between artists is constant and hundreds of examples exist.

They regularly do chraity work, they are in the Make A Wish's "Hall of fame" and have won an award from the foundation for granting more wishes for terminally ill teenagers then any other celebs. They donate a part of the money from their merch to cancer chraitys. They regularly visit homeless shelters. They did Fashion Against Aids.

They ARE leading by example, get your facts right.

First things first - not everyone who listens to MCR is an emo. I would like to point that out to people like 8 Ball, who although apparently have the ability to spell, unlike most of the idiots who post 'MCR are shit, faggots, should be killed etc' are short sighted beyond belief. I'm fine with you not liking MCR or their music, but PLEASE do not stereotype everyone into your narrow minded little world, if you don't like emo's I personally do not understand why you would go onto a page with a band that is claimed to be 'emo' and post hate mail. Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't think that many of the MCR fans on this page would go and look up bands that they don't like and then post hate mail.

Finally, it's ridiculously easy to say someone plagiarised something, because lets face it, alhtough MCR do write creatively, they are singing about things that have been around from the dawn of time, love and death, so really its not particularly surprising that some of their lyrics match other peoples - quite frankly I don't think there is a band out there that is totally unique.

Another thing that strikes me slightly fishy about Fisher's claims is that he left it so late, if someone stole something from me the second I found out I would be suing them for all they're worth, so although I can appreciate that Fisher wants his material back if it has been used, I wonder why he didn't ask earlier.

So that is my (possibly slightly biased)veiw on the matter.

Does it Matter

Gosh, well everything you people have been saying have all had an effect on eachother i think that everyone is entittled (not a good speller) to thier own opnion because not everyone that grows up has the same child hood! i think that the kind of music we are all into is because of our childhoods.

Personally i was quite affened when the Sun blamed MCR for the death of the 13 year old girl But it also said that when she was with her friends she listened to diffrent music and not MCR, i listen to MCR and they helped me through a lot of things! it wasnt because of the kind of music it was the lyrics!, and by the sun refering to MCR (Cancer) lyrics it was quite hurtfull because my family has gone through a loved one having cancer and i thought it help to have a song about it. And i know some people who might be reading this think thats a stupid comment and again that is your own opinion and i tihnk more people should be honest about what they like and what they dont like.

MCR are the most amazing band i have herd so far and i might be young but i dont think that once you have listened to them you can actually forget them, can you?

Who cares about wat Fischer thinks?

I dont see why he bothers to go off on Gerard, atleast ppl enjoy the comic. I really enjoy it, and how much effort gee put into the comic makes it awesome. I could really care less about what that guy thinks, Gerard thanked him, but all the guy did was go off on him, and its ridiculous. He didn;t even notice Gerards email to him which makes it more ridiculous. Its easy to notice why he did it, he just wanted the publicity by acusing Gee of plagirism, but no one didnt care about what he thought.
