The Burning Question 15/01/2008

This week's Burning Question:

PANIC AT THE DISCO HAVE DROPPED THE EXCLAMATION MARK FROM THEIR NAME. AS A CONSEQUENCE, WILL THEIR NEW ALBUM, PRETTY. ODD., BE QUIETER?

Post your comments below and you could appear in next week's Kerrang! magazine.

Please remember to include a link to your MySpace profile so that, if we use your response, we can print a picture of you.

Hey

PANIC! is the one and only Emo band i like! - i think they are great!

I think their album though will just sound like 100s of other middle of the road rock albums though ... rock/pop :P

I think it's okay if they have changed their name.
It doesn't mean their music has changed.
To be honest I think they should put it back in but at the end.

I don't think the '!' will make any difference to whether their next album is good or not, I just think people will take them a bit more seriously... I mean, why did they need the exclamation mark anyway...

I don't think so because they got so far with the first album why would they change now ? And if they do I think they will lose fans that liked them for there original sound.

Well you cant critise them for changing their style. If they want to make change thier style to something they prefer, then they shouldnt worry about the fans.
If they like it fans will follow but they will make new fans too from this change!
So I say good luck to them.

From what ive heard from the album already its abit different as it sounds more mature, however i dont think the "!" is going to make a difference on what it sounds like. I just think panic at the disco are trying to be creative...

well creative or not, drop dead gorgeous lost the comma from their name, and made a brilliant album: it's unfortunately the opposite for Panic at the 50's...

I don't see how dropping the '!' will make any difference at all to their sound. It's only a band name at the end of the day, the name doesn't make a band any better, it's all about the music.

dropping the '!' doesnt mean a thing, i never realised it was there in the first place and i baught the first CD, i may be just really blind but its the music that counts not the name. So unless they're a brand new band then why would that make any difference?

Its like "hey were panic keep speaking we dont have our explanation mark anymore so we dont have a wow factor and no longer contain our in your face appeal at the disco"
I still love the guys, but they've kind of changed its kind of pissing me off XD
Thank god the songs we've heard are good or I'd be sending a lot of capital letters and explanation marks their way!!! LOL!

I love Panic, but honestly I don't see why everyone is so upset about the exclamation point. As they've said, it was never a part of the name to them. They're still the same guys as when they released 'A Fever You Can't Sweat Out'. 'Pretty. Odd' will be just as amazing.

I think the '!' made them the band that they are. As long as they keep the original sound they had a few years ago, im sure their fans will be happy.
But a change is good though. so it may not make a difference.

It's an exclamation mark not the end of the world.
I can't believe you chose this as a subject, nothing better to think off?
They make annoying music, they should just change their whole style not just the '!'... Kerrang! choose a better subject next time.

what is the point it's a band name, it's not going to make them more talented or a better band. i don't care about the name as long as the music is good. they should stop worrying about the name and concentrate on the new album which we've been waiting forever for!

PANIC!

Panic! Are one of the most amazing bands
Dropping the exclamation mark is like getting rid of Brendon Urie!
Wouldn’t be the same.
I spose people are like so it’s a name
It just doesn’t look the same
Just gave the band name more Expression!

Cant wait to see what the new albums like,
Maybe they should of kept the exclamation mark?
Who knows yet.

Does It Really Matter

I'm A big fan of Panic At The Disco, and to be completely honest does it really matter that they have got rid of the exclamation mark its only a lne with a dot under it, from hearing some of their new sons it does sound quite different to what they did on "A Fever You..." but isn't that a good thing it show they have a bigger range than many people gave them credit for, and face it love them or noti'm sure evryone will be keen to hear what they have been up to.

Burning Question

Is this a joke? You can't seriously be asking that?

How about taking back some journalistic authority on music? Don't just put bands in the magazine because they're popular. Especially when the subject is as mundane and boring as this.

You're all intelligent people, with experience in the field of music. Your readership will want to buy the magazine, if you guys are putting in your favourite bands and convincing people that they're good. Not squeezing PATD, Gallows and Fall Out Boy in every issue because people already like them.

Debating whether dropping an exclamation mark in a band's name will affect their sound is not newsworthy. You all know what I'm saying is true, but you've gotten slack, or somewhere along the line someone from EMAP’s convinced you that you need to report this trivial and detrimental rubbish to sell copies and increase circulation.

You're wrong. People will read the magazine if it has something to add. Rather that, than putting a big band's name at the top of some half thought out pointless article that some kid will buy and read and find out nothing new about the band or himselfl. It's crass and it needs to change.

Thanks

Well maybe the first word of every line will be quietened slightly. Also, rather then getting a mental image of people panicking at a disco, I will feel like I am being told to go to a disco and panic. It just takes on a whole new meaning. Whoa. Intense. Not.

Does it really matter. No-one would even care if they'd never put it in there in the first place.
How bout we wait and let the album speak for its self.
Instead of getting all wound up over a tiny line with a dot underneath.
However of the subject of the new album. Well from what I heard at Reading festival I would say we are in for a treat. Yeah, its not gunna be A Fever You Can't Sweat Out all over again. Because they are creative people who are obviously striveing to make an origional and interisting piece of art.

Panic At The Disco Have Changed Alot.
I Thought The "!" Stood Out. I Used To Be A Fan Of Panic At The Disco, But Now I've Found Better Music. Like Lamb of God, Machine Head, KSE, COBHC. I Think PATD Were Very Different At First, Now To Be Honest I Think There Songs Have Gone Crappier. Maybe They Wanted To Be "Normal" Which They Will.. Well. Never Be.

Panic! Vs Panic

the exclamarion is used to indicate strong feelings or high volume, so does this mean that; a) they don't have strong feelings anymore, or, b) the next album is low volume!!!

i think the exclamation on the word Panic!, made it a bit more animated and edgey. but i can't see it making any difference to the songs, or the band.

unless the exclamation itself has a problem with being dropped!!!

I think removing the exclaimation point has blown completely out of proportion. It was a shock to the Panic! boardies for all but five minutes. Now, everyone is basically over it. It's become something, like the website fiasco, that has turned into one big publicity stunt. And, what a surprise, great timing! Right before they announced Honda Civic Tour, and the release of Pretty. Odd.

I think that the new album might be a lot less commercial than AFYCSO, but not quieter. Brendon sure can still belt out those notes as loudly as possible, that's for sure. I don't think anybody should be judging the album on it's (and the band's) punctuation - we'll all just have to wait and see. I'm looking forward to it; I think we all are!

wassssssssssssssssssuuuuuuuuuuupppppppppp:) okay first of all I’m not a massive huge panic fan, but this exclamation mark business is seriously getting out of hand I mean was everyone so attached to the almighty exclamation mark That now that it’s changing they can't bare to enjoy a brilliant talented band as much. I mean for real, just listen to the great music they are making and stop fussing about a fxcking exclamation mark.

thanks :D

the burning question

i think painc at the disco is starting to grow up and i think the new album will also be quite grown up.... but i also think they will start to slowly disappear as there not as good as they are now as when they first came out..

From listening to their new stuff, PATD have changed their sound and approach a bit. But that's what people should've been expecting! The best bands evolve so that each album they make has a new and exciting tone. I'm sure whatever Panic come up with it will be great as well as different. As for the exclamation mark, Kerrang should organise a petition to get it back! You have the power! Now is the time to abuse it!

i think that panic! at the disco without the panic! will kinda suck but hey its only a name so i guess it being plain old panic at the disco wont change anything.
if you had said paramore have changed RIOT! to plain old RIOT then my friends we would have a serious problem.
but yeah i think its suckish but im ok with it its not a big deal.

i have mixed feelings over this one, i think it could be a good idea, but panic! at the disco changes it it makes it a lot more urgent, where as panic at the disco is just a statement, either way it isnt up 2 us to tell a band how their name should be it is after all their band so what ever they feel happy with, and will the album be quieter, why speculate lets just sit back and see what panic have to offer

I'm not really bothered about this. It's their band and they're free to change the name around as much as they want, they've still kept the odd punctuation in their new album title. Although, if Kerrang! dropped the ! everything would go to shit.

Well...I think that taking the ! out was a move towards people taking them more seriously. As of now, not many people do take them seriously as a band.So maybe this next album of their's is going to change the world's veiw on them. I hope for them that it does.

Panic!?

As ridiculous as this topic may sound, I think they were EXTREMELY smart in the taking away of the exclamation mark.
And the reason?....
BECAUSE ITS OBVIOUSLY CAUSING A STIR AND GETTING THEIR NAME OUT THERE JUST THAT LITTLE BIT MORE!.

Work of a genius really.

No, I cant say I myself am a big fan of PATD, but I give them kudos at the time they must have put into thinking of a way to get the media and their viewers talking again!

Since the release of 2-3 hits max off their old album, they have died down quite a bit compared to say, the likes of Fall Out Boy who are hitting the stations with #1 hits every week!.

Its quite obvious that whether your a fan or not, whether this is a stupid topic or not..people are still debating about it, talking about it!! TALKING ONCE AGAIN ABOUT PANIC! (Or should I say Panic) At The Disco.

So Ide say its mission accomplished to the PATD boys for outsmarting the public :P

i mean theres nowt to stop an acoustic band being call 'blood clotted fetus death' or a death metal band being called 'fluffy kittens under autumn leaves' is there!

PANIC? at the disco.

I can't believe anyboody could think that removing a punctuation mark from the name of a band could possibly change the sound of their music.
If it was a really significant part to the name, then i could understnad. like if Wham! took the ! out.
that would just be weird.
But no,
Panic!/ Panic at the disco will always be the same old crap excuse for an emo band that the always were,
exclamation mark or no exclamation mark.

But when you hear the new song you could actually feel the essence of panic at the disco, its less crazy, and out there but its alot more muture. I'm definitly gonna buy the new album, I'm excited to hear the new sound !

To be honest I don't think an exclamation mark means much they're still the same people maybe they've just matured or they just got bored of it so I really don't think removing and exclamation mark from their name will change what their album will sound like.

Pathetic

this is the worst 'this weeks burning question' ever.

how can a band dropping an exclamation mark, have any impact on the musical side of things.

and if you had seen their interview on buzznet, you would have realised, the only reason it has been dropped, is that it was never meant to be there in the first place, they had it there as a joke when they sent out their original demo cd's and it just kinda stuck.

Ok.

Firstly, I love the way K! has made such a big deal about the ! ...I don't think their dropping of it was meant to be symbolic in any shape or form. If the HC interview is anything to go by, the dropped it because they already had a punctuation mark in the album title, and they thought it would look stupid with both.

Secondly... hello?? Kerrang where have you been? Haven't you heard the new material? Of course it's "quieter". When the band first started out they were kids listening to Blink 182 and New Found Glory. Now you're more likely to find them listening to The Beatles, Tom Waits and The Band. Their expanding musical tastes, in combination with their growing maturity, is obviously going to result it a change of direction, musically speaking. They wanted to out-grow the stupid, inane and ignorant "emo" tag that they were given from the word go, which they know full well did not help their credibility in the wider music world, and their way of showing that they aren't tied to any musical genre or scene is by showcasing a different side to their band.

Personally, I think the album is going to be outstandingly good, When The Day Met The Night and Nine in the Afternoon have given a great indication of what's coming. I only hope that their songs don't end up being played on repeat off Virgin's playlist, and that we don't end up having to watch them in a field with lots of beer guzzling 40 year old fat men. I hope I'm right in thinking that, despite the change of direction, there will still be a lovely essence of the Panic! (!) that we know and love, which will keep them original, exciting, and fun.

So... that's what I think anyway :)
Booyah.

I think its a great idea to drop the exclamation mark the world is running out of punctuation due to people overusing it like the rainforests and fossil fuels

you will notice there is no punctuation in this comment

the first time i ever heard a P@D song i was listening to 105.9 and i waspretty impressed even though they reminded me of Fall Out Boy who unfortunately isn't impressing me at all as time goes on. P@D is talented, don't get me wrong but their music is following FOB's and i'm starting to get worried. Honestly they may be part of the Emo epidemic but they're right up there with TBS and Hawthorne Heights. R.I.P. Casey Calvert.

Loosing the "!" wont really have an effect, just gunna take less time to write their name down in the music section on myspace. i heard Panic are dropping the dance-style to their songs too. Theyre just gunna sound like any other emo band now. The dance style gave them an edge, made them different from everyone else.

well maybe they put the extra exclamation mark on the albums name...because having two exclamation marks in the name AND the album would just be extreme.....
or maybe they just decided to drop it
whatever the reason was i'm looking forward to the album just to see what they've come up with and how the music has changed.

Yeah.. OK... odd question... For a start I don't see why anyone cares and its probs just a publicity stunt... But if you DO like thier music I dont think it will make thier music any different... Kerrang! WHAT THE HELL! I THOUGHT IT WAS ALL ABOUT THE ROCK/METAL... This is barely emo... I'd say its pop... Seriously... And as paul pengun said 'I mean, if kerrang! dropped the exclamation mark would the magazine suddenly become shit? Thought not.' Yeah so HA!

Claire, I like your answer :)

It's almost even plausible. Except sadly these days I expect Pete Wentz gets his manager's manager's friend's manager's press department's main PR person's assistant to do that for him.

Oh well!

I think it'll be hard to get out of the habit of writing it, 'Panic! at the disco.'

But please, they haven't 'changed.'
If anything, they're still trying to find their unique sound in today's mainstreamed society.

this is such a tragedy!!!
panic isn't panic without an ! at the end
otherwise it just doesn't make you panic enough
and normal panic at a disco would be absoultely rubbish unless it was like OMG theres panic !!!! at a disco cuz the !!! make it panicky xD

They're gonna fuck up my i-tunes. Not cool.
They've always needed a grammar lesson to be honest, but the loss of the exclamation mark won't make much difference because they've changed their sound anyway (from what I've heard in the new tracks).

It just shows they've grown up a bit.

The exclamation mark made the name stand out. Without it, it'll look weird, and it wont be so 'panic' like. But I don't think their music will change because of it.

What difference ia an exclamation mark gonna make to the sound. Fair enough if the sound it quieter, but why should the exclamation mark make a difference?

i know their next album will be different, but i dont think it will be quiter, thehy alrady admitted that their music willbe different. just from changing their name by one ! it wont make much difference, becuase alot of bands have changed their name... Elliot Minor i know are a reletivly new band to Kerrang! but they avent changed their music since they were The Academy and to be honest, i liked them then and i still love them now.

you know what i think? i think the next album will definately be just as gay as the last, if not, even worse. and the missing exclamation mark will make a difference: how will their pathetic fans cope without it? all these "trevor! at the disco" emo types will have to actually be a bit more original... it's just not in their character. x

why, why WHY would they do that? that's just plain stupid. i mean, i can't think of any bands other than P!ATD that have an exclamation mark in their name, [or PATD i should say] what a load of noobs! honestly i don't actually care that much but the exclamation mark makes it look cool and like, OH MY GOD PANIC! and now we can't really make jokes like "hey brendon where's the panic?" well we can, but it's lost it's enthusiasm now if you know what i mean...
whatever they still rock :]

Not a big deal..

The change in their name makes no difference to the music they produce, it's not a big deal. They are still the same band as they started out to be.
Just give the guys a break, some people like them and some people dont. Stop going on about this emo crap, it's so annoying. Just let them do what they do best, making good music and writing good lyrics that people can relate to.

In changing their name all they've done really is changed how they want to be seen, its all about image in the music industry. I dont think they'll tone down their music, but they just might want to be taken more seriously, and less like the teenage band they were before.
Its just how bands evolve to survive in the industry.
we can only wait and see how the new album turns out!

Maybe they're trying to confuse their fans. Now we can't call them Panic!, we'll have to say Panic, which is oh so boring compared to shouting. Though, honestly, I don't see the issue. No, I dont think dropping a "!" off their name will change the way fans look at their music.
But also, their music is alot different on this album, so some fans might change.
But really, if you stop liking a band just cos they took a "!" off their name, then thats pretty sad.
Although i have to admit, ill probably still call them Panic! At the Disco, cos its juts not the same without the exclamamtion mark!!

im a fan, and sure, it made the band abit more individual, but just cause they took a ! out their name isn't going to make them a completely different band.
they're growing as a band, and if they want to change, let them change, hopefully their fans will understand that too and accept it.

Panic [!] At The Disco

It shouldn't really matter but I think it might.

The ! was what added some originality I mean any band could have thought of 'Panic At The Disco' now they'll just be like another manufactured band =[

I hope it doesn't change anything though

LOL

HAHAHA

I can't believe Kerrang has put the "song" 'We're so starving' on their 'songs you should listen to this week/month/whatever it is' playlist...!!!!!

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

HELLOO??
DID YOU STILL NOT REALISE THAT THE SONG IS MEANT TO BE A JOKE?!

Oh, wait... I forgot, you probably won't find out until at least 2 more weeks. Then you'll announce it as a news-breaking story. Snore.

Panic at the disco

HEYLO!

I think the '!' made them more original, They will still be The Panic (!) At The Disco, just minus an '!'.
Their new album will be quite different to 'A fever you can't sweat out', but that was made ages ago, of course it's going to be different!

I can't wait until 'Pretty.Odd' is out! Juding by Nine in the afternoon' , it sounds pretty good!

Didn't They say they're going to take back the '!' in a little while? I hope they do because it makes them stand out from the other band names. Whatever they decide to do, i'm not going to worry over an '!' I'll always love their music, after all, its the music that counts! :D

Burning question

I don't think the ! has anything to do with the album directly. I just think the band are growing up, the're not teenagers anymore.

it wont change their music. the new album will be just as strange and emotastic as the last one. (ryan ross's self portrait was suprisingly good)

Panic without the !

You know, just because Panic at the disco have dropped the exclamation point from their name, it doesn't mean their music will be any better or any worse. It's the people who make the music, not the name. So, at least wait until the new album is out before people make any judgements. When they released a fever you cant sweat out, they were just teenagers, so maybe they felt the needed to drop the exclamation point to mature a little. Judging from nine in the afternoon and we're so starving, their new album is going to be great. So lets just wait until it comes out.

Panic without the !

I agree. They said in an interview that they never even put it there in the first place, just that they had written it in like once and people had decided that thats how the name is written.

!!!

Iheard a couple of their songs at Decaydance and it sounded very dulled down compared to their last album - not so showy. I like the showy panic!

it's pretty stupid for them to do that, it's only an excelmation mark, nobody will be bothered much by the removal in terms of buying the albums!

The Burning Question

Yeah, i reckon it will. They've been going on about how they've "matured" and how "emo is bullshit" so their new music is probably gonna be way more toned down. Let's face it: it'll suck.
