Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz and frontman Patrick Sump have waded into the US presidential debate by lending their support to potential Democrats candidate Barack Obama.
"To find a candidate that I completely agreed with I'd have to run myself," Wentz told MTV news. "And I'm not sure people would be ready for tax-free ice cream and [American wrestler] Macho Man Randy Savage as the Secretary of State."
On a serious note, Wentz added:
"I find Obama to be an electrifying candidate. His perspective is fresh, and he's said that he would meet diplomatically with almost any world leader, which, in my opinion, would greatly change the rest of the world's view of the United States."
The emo pair are also planning a fundraiser for the US presidential hopeful tomorrow night at the Chicago Lakeview Broadcasting Company in Obama's - and FOB's - home state of Illinois. A $75 donation to Obama's campaign fund will get you in the door and a limited-edition T-shirt designed by Wentz's merch company Clandestine Industries.
"They were slightly wary of having someone like me involved, but they vetted me, which was pretty intense," says Wentz. "If we had the speeches or the momentum of Oprah, we'd probably have done something else. But given that many fans of ours are under the age of 18, we decided that convincing their parents to get involved monetarily, or by canvassing neighborhood, is probably the best."
Asked whether Obama will be in attendance at the event, Wentz said:
"I'm not sure if Barack will be there. He seems even more busy than Panic at the Disco lately."
