Hawthorne Heights: Coroner isses toxicology report

A coroners’ report looking into the death of Hawthorne Heights' guitarist Casey Calvert, who died last month, has been released.

Initially it was thought that Calvert died of an accidental mixture of prescribed depression medication. However, a recently released toxicology report states that Calvert's death may have been due to "substance abuse" because of an opiate that was found in his system.

The band have dismissed the claims.

"What the toxicology report doesn't show is that prior to us leaving for tour, Casey had a root canal and was prescribed Vicodin for the pain," they said in an official statement.

If he died of substance abuse then that's such a waste and if he did then shame on HH for NOT talking about it. Loads of ex-substance abusers, including myself, did not realise the implications of taking certain substances and personally, I feel it is HH's duty to warn people about the dangers of substance abuse, NOT to sweep it under the rug. and if he didn't die of substance abuse then let him Rest In Peace.

Vicodin?

When I first read this information something did not make sense. Why was he taking Vicodin, especially after having a root canal?! Maybe that is what they do in the US, but it seems weird. A root canal kills the pain causing bacteria that destroys the nerve tissue; therefore, why would anyone need a pain killer? Also, why would a dentist prescribe Vicodin if the patient is on medication for depression? The only way is if the patient has not properly informed (lied to) the dentist about the medication he/she is taking. If there was any type of pain he should have contacted the dentist, who would have told him to go get some Ibuprofen.

The news about Mr. Calvert is heartbreaking and I think the honourable thing to do is to say goodbye and keep him in your memory. He should be an example of the tragic loss of life, not something to gossip over.

Vicodin?

Blooming heck! Someone with a brain, who can type properly and has some knowledge outside of how great MCR are!! From my experiences in America they give the stuff out like candy! There is some discomfort associated with a root canal procedure, the tooth is drilled which could cause some short term discomfort which should be bearable after the local had worn off though.

As for lying, people are quite often unwilling to discuss the fact they are receiving treatment for a mental illness. They are often unaware that lying to medics about it could have fatal consequences.

LOL - I think when a coroner is involved it means someone is dead, I don't think they work on live subjects (imagine it). Also, it mentions 'death' so I guess he IS dead.
