Live Earth: Metallica record complaints

What do you think the number one complaint about the recent Live Earth concert on July 7 was?

Sex? Violence? Swearing? Nope, it was Metallica's set being cut short.

Bad language by stars at Live Earth at Wembley Stadium in London attracted more than 130 complaints to the BBC - but more than 400 complained about Metallica's set being cut short.

Too bloody right!

Damn Straight!

Sitting through all those shite pop bands and celeberities going on about how terrible global warming is when a majority of them took a plane to get there. With the excpetion of the Foo Fighters, Metallica were the only band worth watching and they show a tiny bit, what a waste of an afternoon!

Damn right there was loadsa complaints about it. Metallica are a massive band (over 90 MILLION albums sold) and they get cut for some absolute crap? And whats the BBCs excuse?
"Oh, we wanted to show acts from around the world at the other concerts"
Pardon me, but I thought that was what the Live Earth show right after the Live Aid footage was for?

Whether or not you are a Metallica fan or not its insulting that an act representing fans of hard rock and metal (genres which outsell almost every other music with the exception of rap and R n' B) is cut in place of...what exactly?

Rap and R n' B outselling Rock?

In America the biggest selling Album by a group is Back in Black by AC/DC selling over 20 Million copies just there, in total they have sold over 150 Million albums across the World and Metallica are over 95 Million so should get over the 100 Million very soon.

Pearl Jam hold or held the record for the fastest selling album. Vs was selling a Million per week and then Vitology did the same thing.

Smash by the Offspring is the Biggest selling album on an Indipendent Label.

Guns'N'Roses was the 1st band since the Beatles to have an Album at No.1 & 2 at the same time in the USA, Use Your...1&2.

There are many more Rock/Metal acts that have also sold Millions and broken records such as Iron Maiden, Led Zep, Green Day and R.H.C.P to name but a few.

So to sum it up I think Rock & Metal can go head to head with any Musical Genre and usually come out on top.

Who Cares?

So they cut the Metallica set short. Big deal. What they showed was a set by a band that don't care if they put on a good show anymore.
Why were they only playing material off the black album? Granted, it was a pop gig, but then why be there at all.
After the horrible mess that St Anger was why the hell are they still around anyway?

Who Cares? - For Whom The Bell Tolls!

They were originaly supposed to perform 4 songs, the 4th being For Whom The Bell Tolls. During the day they were told that because of a time shortage that they would only have time to play 3 songs so they dropped F.H.T.B.T.

I think it would have been better instead to have dropped Sad But True and played For Whom The Bell Tolls as planned.

Metallica's "sound" has always been slightly dodgy but they used to make up for it by writing good songs.

As for the latest album, I don't intend to buy it unless I find out it's brilliant first. Too many bands get rich and give up on making good music, whilst good bands fail to make money and die.
Money grabbers - Metallica, Korn, Gimp Biscuit, Marilyn Manson, Incubus
Moneyless and missed - One Minute Silence, Sunna, Miocene, Million Dead, Kidneythieves, etc, etc
There is much better music out there than Metallica. I'll stick with bands like Sikth, Tool and In Flames

It's a shame Kerrang only promote pop bands these days.

Hmmmmm, not sure I agree with Metallica being put into the same category as Limp Dickshit. I mean come on, they wrote One, Master of Puppets, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Battery, Nothing Else Matters and Enter Sandman for fucks sake. Yes, recent stuff has been fairly crap but even Led Zep put out some dodgy stuff towards the end. I have a feeling you are saying that stuff just to be controversial- don't tell me you don't go a bit crazy when One comes on in a club? That's like the people who claim not to like Maiden but go mad for Run To The Hills. By the way, I am also a huge TooL fan who is going to all 3 gigs next month but I am man enough to admit that Metallica completely blew them away at Download 06 (although TooL were still awesome!) Metallica's set was something seriously special.

By the way, totally agree about One Minute Silence and Sunna. How frickin awesome were they?!

Shut the fuck up! - in response

hahahaha

You 13 year old retard. Learn to spell. Also, learn about grammar.

Music extends way beyond thrash. Yes, Machine Head are "awesome". No, selling out Wembley Stadium does not make you a good band - See every other band that plays there (with the exception of Muse).

Buy a Bjork, Imogen Heap or Sigur Ros album. Even experiment with the different genres of metal music. When you grow up you'll understand. After 21 years of following Metal I can safely say that Metallica are not the most technically gifted, cleverest, catchiest or heaviest band out there. They aren't even thrash - buy an early Megadeth or Slayer album for that.

haha I love it.

Who cares is right.
I used to consider anything but 'RAWK' to be criminally dull, but then I discovered Sigur Ros and suddenly my perspective changed.

I have seen 'Tallica' live, and they were good, but certainly not the best. The fact was that the majority of the viewing public would have rather seen something else, other than a metal band. The handful of people who complained were a tiny fraction of those who watched the gig, and were probably all at Wembley soon after anyway.

Seriously, we can't all be 'rock idealists'. Just because we like something, doesn't mean everyone else does too.

Yeah maybe more of the public would have wanted to see something more popular, but they happen to be there because of the wembly gig the next day and also the organisors wanted to show that its not just pop trying to make a difference. and only playing 3 songs why the fuck did they cut it short, poor Chris Rock got cut short but that was just funny as fuck.

I saw 'tallica at Download 06 and I have to say they were incredible, playing the whole Master of Puppets album, brilliant, my band of the weekend.

yes st anger was the biggest pile of shite and they have been on abit of a bad patch, since the load album anyway. But im sure/preying that this next album will be a good one.

Em.... I was at Metallica on July 8th. They did not sell it out AT ALL. But they were brilliant and deserve to be so successful. They are very talented, not only a song-writing but at playing their instruments- only few can beat Kirk Hammet at metal lead guitar.

Musical tastes

I would like to agree with the chap who pointed out some of the more 'prog' esc bands like Sigur Ros (the band that did the theme tune for 'Planet Earth') that rock and metal fans may indeed be pleasently suprised by the other forms of music they might find.

But that said, c'mon, most people who read kerrang and other 'alt' music magaisnes wana rock the Hell out and bands like Metallicahelp them do that. Tool are imense but they dont have the 'headbang' factor that some others have.

As for the 'Metallica arnt thrash'...obviously they arnt bloody thrash. Metallica themselves even said they wernt bloody thrash some 20+ years ago! That was the whole point of making 'Ride The Lightning' a completely different album from 'Kill 'em all' and why 'Master of Puppets' even more different. They were always trying to break away from sounding the same as the other bands around them.

But again...wasnt this news artical about the number of complaints due to their set beiing cut?

Yeah fair enough fans were annoyed by this.

I personally was more annoyed at the fact they cut the Beastie Boys 3/4 of the way through Intergalactic, to then show Shakira instead - who had been on at least 5 times already on fucking BBCi. Same fucking song aswell. Urgh.

not only live earth

Well, I saw them on tv on saturday, but saw them live on sunday, well tried to... cause standing on the pitch was almost impossible to see anything, just on the screens. They made a ring in front of the stage for a few ones, whilst the majority were struggling in the back. The acoustic was horrible... the staff of the stadium were lost... they were rude... the worst concert i'v been so far this year... But i still love metallica... If you are planning going to a concert at wembley... don't... waste of time and money..

I was there on Sunday too could'nt agree more about the acoustics, absolute crap and just not loud enough could hold a sensible conversation with person next to me all through the set without having to raise my voice.
Metallica were just like background music, whats going on. I expect to leave a gig like that with my ears bleeding. Wembley stadium not bloody good enough!!

But you do have to consider the fact that they have noise limits. In there, it's not allowed to go over 110 decibels, which is like the quiet part of gigs.
