I just watched the American news report, shown on kerrang website about the emo culture. I'm extremely angry that such an ill informed report can be shown to millions on t.v.
The emo culture does not mean people are depressed, just as if your a chav it doesn't mean you go around hitting everyone you see because they're not wearing a tracksuit.
It's true many people turn as it says to 'emo' to feel secure, but most 'emo' people that i know are happy as larry, and some of the most enthuastic people i know, none of this bullcrap that is shown on the report. It is a serious issue about people self harming, and some people do it, but it is a really small minority. If parent's get hold of this it's going to ruin things for many kids, i know my parents would probably be checking under my wristband's all the time, and telling me not to listen to the band's i do anymore.
It really need's to be shown to the world what being caterogised under emo means, it's not too far off 'mosha' or 'greebo', if people can see how it brings so many people together and atually changed peoples lives for the good, i'm sure people will stop paying attention to these full of shit reports.

People who self harm arent just craving attention.
It's a way of relieving the pain in our lives.
It's helps people focus on anotehr pain than the pain we feel in life.
May it be friendship problems or family struggles.
A lot of people who do self harm try to hide this fact, as they DONT WANT THE ATTENTION.
The attention then causes worry and people say ''Please stop, i'm so worried, you need to stop'' or what ever.
Which can then cause the self harmer to feel guilty about it.
Then they feel even worse.
Then they self harm more and more.

It's so stupid to suggest that it's emo kids that cut themselves. Self harm is not an issue soley to do with music and to say that emo kids do this as a fashion statement is riddiculous. It's not just emos who self-harm. In a lot of cases emo music helps to stop this kind of behaviour. The genre simply deals with the kinds of issues that teenagers can relate to. Teenage life can be depressing, and teenagers get depressed but that applies to all teenagers, not just emo kids.
It's just another example of the media irresponsibly creating moral panics about something which they don't understand, or in this case, know anything about. It's not a new thing, it happened in the 60s with Mods and Rockers. I just thought in this day and age where we as society are meant to be more sophisticated and educated that this kind of Journalism would not be taken seriously anymore.

I don't normally comment on this stuff, but how heavily edited can you get? It makes me sick. It really does, I have been listening to bands such as Saves The Day, The Get Up Kids, Funeral For a Friend and Finch since I was eleven years old. I have grown up with this music, and if anything it has inspired me to live my life full of vigour. Don't be afraid, if anything they suggest within their lyrics that it is okay to hurt, because everyone does. You get through it. It has a positive message.
I am now twenty years old, and having attended a degree in journalism for three years of my life where I found many pros and cons of how the media works. I guess this was the aspect I hated most. 'The blame culture'. Geez, 'my son died this morning' I know! 'Lets go and blame My Chemical Romance'.
Let me just say something, I am by no means a MCR fanboy, not in the slightest. If anything I think latter day MCR has become so much of a gimmick that I cant possibly relate to whats being said in the music anymore. But thats okay, because thousands can relate, and if you listen to the lyrics. Tell me one single song on any of their albums, which doesnt in some form or another inspire hope. That is what I would dare these magazines to do, go on, go and depict some of the lyrics. Slice them up, investigate them, eat you're breakfast out them. Do what a proper journalist should do - Investigate!
So the second biggest cause of death in Utah is Suicide, thus relates to the 'emo' trend. Explain please, did you're analysis cover the whole spectrum, or in reality did you simply ask one parent about the problems in a neighbourhood.
No wonder the children on both sides of the Atlantic feel so trapped these days, it's ridiculous.

They're confusing music with life and maybe they should have a reality check, instead of sending teenagers into therapy for every problem they have. Emo isn't cutting and pain and misery, that's just part of growing up and whether you choose to or not, has little or nothing to do with your parents. Once they think they have the right to look under your bracelets or whatever then its obvious you have no privacy or any place to go to escape what's rapidbly becoming a police state, which both England and America are doing. The more they push us the more we're going to withdraw, and by we I mean all teenagers, not just emos. And don't they see that emos aren't the worst problem out there? While they're getting up in arms about emos, other teenagers are beating people up, stealing, vandalising and generally causing havoc, but they go unnoticed or get put under the same label. They need to wake up and realise that they no longer have control, before its too late.

emo is just a stereotype. emo started as a genre of music. then it became a style or a fashion statement. people associated "emo" kids as sad and depressed all the time because obviously the word emo comes from emotional. it is not true that all "emo kids" cut themselves its up to whoever you are wether you are a girly girl...or u dress from abercrombie and fitch. ive known a lot of kids who slit their wrists and theyre not "emo". emo is just a stereotype. emo started as a genre of music. then it became a style or a fashion statement. people associated "emo" kids as sad and depressed all the time because obviously the word emo comes from emotional. it is not true that all "emo kids" cut themselves its up to whoever you are wether you are a girly girl...or u dress from abercrombie and fitch. ive known a lot of kids who slit their wrists and theyre not "emo".
This is getting ridiculous now even the news label kids as if they were cans of soup. it shows everyone else that stereotyping and labeling people is ok, which is not. If they really want to help then they should help the kids who slit their wrists , . not somebody who they think slits their wrists just because of the way they dress. The "emo music" as they called it on the news report does not all contain lyrics about suicide, some of it does but after all they are just lyrics and theyre just expressing how someone feels it doesnt mean that teenagers are gonna go and kill themselves after they heard a song that talks about suicide.
Skinny jeans are not "girl pants" guys and girls wear them thats just stereotyping..once again. "Emo guys" do not make out with each other. A lot of people do it and theyre not emo, girls do it also. So why is there a problem with guys doing it ? when theres a whole gay community out there and gays can get marrried in some of the states of the us? if they wanted to stop this then they should've tried to stop this before they passed the law for gay marriage. EMO is just a stereotype and i dont think people like being stereotype. Emo is just a music genre and a fashion, the people who need help are those cutting. not the kids who dress in black and wear skinny jeans.
So what...... it's not adults business. ABC4 I hate you. Letting them into this stuff boy oh boy. Hmm..... that's not even fair. If a child feels down then a child feels down. Jeez. I mean like if they made that boy show his wrists that is so out of order. His body, his mind, HIS CHOICES!

I think these people are missing the point.These kids don't cut themselves because they're EMO, they do it because they're depressed. Society always needs a scapegoat and they always blame music!! I'm old enough to remember Punk being Evil, Ozzy being the anti-christ and Judas Priest inciting Teen Suicides. Society was wrong then, and it's wrong now. WAKE UP!!

I think this is really out of order.First My Chemical Romance is not 'emo'.MCR try to help kids who are depressed.Not all 'emos' cut themselves. I am what you call 'emo', i don't cut myself.I think this whole war on emo is bullshit.Oh and MCR rocked at Wembley on thr 29th of March.I saw them and was like wow!!
Cutting isn't something you can shove into a stereotype until it gets to a point where people cut because it's "cool" which isn't even emo - it's SCENE.
Also, i notice how all their opinions on what "emo" is were from third parties? They never asked any emos what it is.
