You know its really funny because that silly little "E" word doesn't exist because not a single band claims to be emo in interviews. All music invokes emotion so to say one genre invokes more emotion than another is ridiculous. What your all hating is a scene of eyeliner and skinny jeans which is quite a recent subculture considering “emo” has been around since 1984 when certain Washington D.C punk bands stopped singing about politics and moved on to singing about girls. This movement then moved on to a less punk movement with bands like “Texas is the reason” “The promise ring” and “Sunny day real estate” This led on to a movement in the mid to late 90’s with bands like “Saves the day” and “The Get Up Kids” “Jimmy Eat World” making the same music but in a more accessible way of 2-3 minute catchy songs, then towards the latter part of the 90’s bands like “Taking Back Sunday” “Brand New” “From Autumn to Ashes” appear and do there own thing. The ridiculous thing about the word is that all these “emo” bands styles differ so much that they can’t be pooled into one genre if anyone can explain to me how “jimmy eat world” and “my chemical romance” should be in the same catergory then they should be working in music journalism because I can’t figure it out, I have been listening to this stuff before it was cool to stick your fringe over your eyes and squeeze your girlfriends jeans on. Everyone looked so different from one another you could turn up to a show in a Nike t-shirt and ordinary jeans and no one would scoff or say you didn’t deserve to be there because you weren’t emo. The other month my friends and myself were being a bit rowdy and one of my friends fell into some silly 14 year old who told me I shouldn’t be at a Taking Back Sunday show because “I probably only new their new stuff” the look on his face changed when I told him it was my 12th TBS show. By all means hate the scene but don’t say you hate emo because until people start labelling bands correctly people like me are in that stupid tag and I don’t cut myself or shop at Gap Kids I just love the music. I wish that people who work at certain music publications and all the “alternative/Indie” music listeners would stop taking the piss out of it, because I could point out how if your in a band with a Cockney accent and go on about how you love going out in Camden town, NME and Zane Lowe will think you’re the hottest shit ever for about a month and as soon as your tour has finished and everyone has listened to your record no body cares anymore until the next “saviours of British music” come along with their Mancurian accents and sing about boozing etc. A band doesn’t deserve shit because their music is simple because if they did that would mean that “editors” “Kaiser chiefs” “Razorlight” “Fratellies” and all those other bands are not the music God’s the press has claimed them to be.
As for chavs in the last 4 months I have had 5 incidents with them the last one was 3 weeks ago, a taxi I was in was jumped on by four wonderful looking chaps clearly they were all law students with part time jobs lol. They tried to kick the windshield in demanding money, whilst one tried to smash my window with his arm. I had 7 quid on me, for me this was the final step so I have bought a can of mace which is carried with me anytime I am in Cardiff shopping or out in the night with my mates so the next time any group of GANSTA’s want to start they’re eyes are going to hurt like hell for 48 hours with the initial spray they won’t be able to breath and will fall to their knees and whimper like little girls. I wonder if 2pac and Dre will think they’re cool then?

Funeral for a Friend

im not sure about the first release from funeral for a friends new album. But as ive heard from there myspace page, its the weakest song on the whole album. Now im looking forward to seeing them at Nottingham Rock City.

one sunny lunchtime me and my friend zoogle went to the newsagents to find the best band i nthe world linkin park on your from cover well i screamed and shouted and wooped only to have the shopkeeper to chuck me out for getting over excited! i was shocked so shocked in fact that i ran to another shop and bought the copy there (where i didnt get chucked out but only laughed at while i shouted and screamed and rejoyced over the smexyful linkin park!)<

Er where's Muse? i liked the Juliette Lewis thing alot and the poster of Ville at GIAN was awesome but i mean c'mon. A magazine like yours needs more of the better people. By rights Muse should be in there EVERY week. and HIM. Oh and i really think despite your crappy review of Kill Hannah at GIAN they were awesome in Birmingham and you really should feature them. They are amazing.

Also The Pandora sketch on Mikey Way was so funny, it's a about time they put some humour into Pandora and MCR...

30 seconds to mars review

30 Seconds to Mars are an incredible band.
their sound is unique, compared only to Angels and Airwaves, but even that is a far way away.
Yes they have an actor as a frontman, but is that any reason to condemn them before you listen? I read the one K review on the gig in London and I have to say I was shocked. I had been to the gig 4 days before in Glasgow and don't see where they were getting any evidence to criticise them, that is if the gig was anything like in Glasgow.
Since Kerrang! seems to be obsessed with the fact Jared Leto is an actor I'm going to argue about that first. OK so he's an actor. Big deal. A 'normal' person can have two jobs, why can't he? It just happens to be two high rofile jobs he has. If Kerrang! did their research they would find that Jared also does a lot of behind the scenes work. just wathch a making of video and you'll see, and there's the huge rumour that he directed the video for "The Kill". If he did why doesn't he admit it you may ask? Perhaps so you magazines will get off his back about having two more than one job and let him get on with it, and enjoy the end result.
In the review, posters, interviews etc. the focus is always on the front man. How about looking at the 3 other members , Shannon, Tomo and currently Tim Kelleher since Matt left. Without Shannon, 30STM would not exist. It is a joint effoert between the two brothers, not just Jared and co. Tomo and Tim, or any other bass player, are just as valuable to 30STM. These two members are completely forgotten but should be recognised because without them the band would not be as it is today. An interview with Tomo, Jared and Shannon revealed that Tomo had influenced the Letos to simplify their sound, so it's not the 'Jared Leto Show' as the media keeps on suggesting.
Back to the idea Jared is just 'acting' the part of a rockstar. So if he's acting, where's he getting the songs he's singing, or the music he's playing? Surely if someone was going to 'act' like a rockstar they would play music that is like everything else around at the time, not something quite unique. And what rockstar doesn't do stage dives (certainly in London it didn't quite work, at Glasgow it did, the only problem was he lost his mic in the process, but a member of the crowd got it back to him), do acoustic sets, interact with the crowd etc. It's a way that works. If he had tried something drasticly different, your rewiew would probably be something like "actor tries to prove he isn't acting by spraying crowd with fruit" or something to that effect. My point is there isn't much room for creativity at a gig, especially on the small scale they were working at in this country.
The acoustic set could actually be a chance for the band members to rest. The entire band is very animated most of the time, whether it be jumping around with a guitar , battering drums, or running across the stage constantly so the people in the far corners of the hall are included. The acoustic set lets the 3 other members rest, have a drink, relax while Jared sits out front with his guitar and sings calmer songs. You don't want the band you're watching to collapse with exhaustion while they are on stage.
Jared as an actor. Isn't every rockstar a bit of an actor? Gerard Way makes up characters in his head to become while performing certain songs. Most frontmen act a bit when in music videos. Just because Jared has been in a few bigger films, he is singled out. I have only seen one film he was in, Alexander, playing Hephistien, a gay-Greek-Irish soldier. Not the best film ever. So suggesting all of 30STM's fans are just Jared-the-actor fans is wrong.
In the review you commented about him being the fromtman and Tim, Tomo and Shannon being forgotten. Who's fault is that? You wrote the review, conducted the interviews, chose what photos to put as posters, and flicking through I notice a pattern. Very little or no mention of Shannon, Tomo, Tim or Matt when he was part of the band. Is it any wonder Jared has the focus? The other members don't have a chance. And is it not typical for the singer in the band to be the frontman? The only band that springs to mind is Fallout Boy, where the bass player has taken the role rather than Patrick Stump, mainly because Pete Wentz has more appeal to the ladies.
Shouldn't a MUSIC magazine be rating the MUSIC and PERFORMANCE rather than simply the frontman. That's what Kerrang! have done. Not rated a live show but criticised a man for doing his job. A job that depends on other peoples opinions. Perhaps Kerrang! should sent someone who hasn't already made up their mind about what the gig will be like before the go next time.

do you know what i really wanna say thank you! i'm so glad somebody has finally said it! i prob should not say this as its kerrang's website an all, but lately i've stopped watching it. i would rather watch scuzz to be honest, at least they are more supportive to 30 stm! they play at least one of their videos every day, where as the kerrang channel does not even list them. i know the guys have not been going very long over here, but how can they be expected to prtove themselves when people like the idiot who wrote the review wont give them a chance. you would also think by now that everyone would get over the fact that jared is an actor, people can think what they like of him, but i just think he is very talented to be able to act as well as sing and write awesome songs!

Why is everyone complaining about emos and arguing so much. emos listen to a sub genre of rock just like the rest of the people reading kerrang. as long as rock is heard thats what counts. But it is true, kerrang magazine needs feedback on more bands. I want to see more of bands like Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, Enter Shikari, Protest the Hero, Scary Kids Scaring Kids and Saosin, to name just a few.

Whats with all the people starting fights about Emo? I might sound like a Emo myself by trying to help them out, but I'm not, If i where to call myself anything it would have to be Grunge.
I think all the hype that 'Emo is Bad' 'Kerrang is full of Emo', well.. in my opinion, don't buy kerrang if you think its too 'Emo' for you, and if you think its bad, stop whinning because you do sound like a Emo. Also, Emo isnt a word, and only dumb people us it to lable others.( Yes.. Posters and merchandise

hey guys just writing in to says thanks for all the awesome posters, but could you put some posters of smaller bands in please.
Like HelloGoodbye, Madina Lake, and Billy Talent.
People think they suck just because they havent heard of them.
Also why is merchandise so expensive!
I mean it costs a tenner for a FOB t shirt then another 3 or 4 quid to ship it.
All american bands tend to have american merch site which have cheap merch, but they cost a fortune to send and get to us in England in like 4 weeks.
I took a look on the hellogoodbye merchandise site and found a t shirt that was $5, i thought to myself excellent finally a cheap tee then when i got to the ordering section it said it costs $20 to send it to the U.K!

pleased to see LP on the front cover but your interview with them was horrible! you made them out be a bunch of fucking sell outs WHICH THEY ARE NOT! i cant claim to know the band but i do know they are close friends and i dont see why the interviewer had to ask about Chesters personal life then have a dig at his and Robs relationship. i have seen the band lost alone a couple of times live and i have there album i dont think they have anouth plublisty out there they decsive murch more because there really good and its good to see some new faces out there what r actully really good musicians

i advise people to buy it they wont be desapointed its could say no to the world by lostalone

I'm sorry guys...

I'm sorry to say that this argument is completely pointless. Like JW says, emotion is invoked through all kinds of music, therefore, to say that you hate emos or you are an emo is ridiculous. Typically, people like to think of "emos" as being the type of people who hate the world and want to kill themselves, but such narrow-minded people forget that they too exhibit emotion. So to bicker at eachother simply because one type of person is more emotionally sensitive than the other, its childish and unecessary.
Ultimately, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but objectively, Linkin Park performed well at Download Festival '07; they knew how to work the crowd even though Chester did hit a few bum notes. The selection of songs suited fans of Hybrid Theory, Meteora AND Minutes to Midnight; so this performance had a lot of variety and didn't hold any bias to one particular album.

Admittedly, you may like this band if you were angry, but their lyrics don't just encompass anger, but many other fields of emotion... linking back to the discussion of "emos" - just because a particular band writes lyrics that display anger/negative feelings, this does not mean they fall into the category of being an "emo" band.

NO, NO NO, It may of started out as a trend but now it has become bigger.

Its a way of expressing yourself through different ways, like u have Chav for example.
