Linkin Park vocalist Mike Shinoda has told Kerrang! that the recording sessions for their third studio album 'Minutes To Midnight' were "a series of failures and breakthroughs" as they purposefully redefined their sound.
After taking a two-year break, the band spent 14 months honing over 100 song ideas into the 12-track album which will be released in May.
"It would have been great to get it done in three months, but we knew that wasn't going to be the case," says Shinoda. "We had set our sights on really re-evaluating the sound of the band.
"We've always hated being labelled as a rap-rock band," he adds. "We've never felt like we were part of that scene, it was everybody else that tried to put us in with all that stuff. There's a lot of variety on the album and we loved working on it."
'Minutes To Midnight' was recorded at Los Angeles' Personal Studio, and was produced by Shinoda and Rick Rubin (Red Hot Chili Peppers, Metallica) and will be released through Warner Bros Records on May 14.
